Prior to WW2, Dennis Poore raced a s/c MG in various speed events.

Can anyone tell me more about the car in question, who else might have owned it, and what became of it?

thanks, Richard.

A post by our friend JMH on the MMM Register Forum suggests Poore owned J4 c/n 4002.

RD Poore "Dennis" owned & competed in J4002 between March 1937 & late 1948 when it passed to Young Cavendish (Lord Chesham no less). Whilst he did mainly speed events he also did the odd race, notably the October 1938 Crystal Palace meeting where he crashed twice in practice! It was subsequently owned by David Piper ("the" David Piper) who raced the car, before fitting the engine into his "Empire Lotus". The car passed through several pairs of hands, but has been in the same ownership since the early 70s when it was restored to a very high standard. It's still entered in MGCC & VSCC events. He also owned RA0258 for a couple of years immediately after WWII, but did not do that much with it (probably because there was not that much to do).

Excellent, thanks all, I hadn't realised that the R-Type only came along post-WW2. The J4 survives then, does the R-Type?

The ex-Poore R-Type was one of many pre-war MGs owned about 20 years ago by Syd Beer. I'm sure someone will have more recent info
