Just curious having looked through Chris Amon's career and wonder if anyone else qualified on pole more often than the luckless Kiwi who never won a WDC GP.

He scored 3 poles (in a row) for Ferrari in 1968 and 3 for Matra in 1971/72.

He also qualified on the front row a staggering 19 times!

I doubt that this non-conversion rate would be possible in today's reliability era.

Nope, Amon is indeed the driver having had the most poles without winning a GP.

Second is Jean-Pierre Jarier with 3 poles without a win, but with 134 GPs (Amon 96 GPs).

Did a little pole position research and found this:

Ronnie Peterson had 4 pole positions before he won his first race (not from pole), the first pole he converted to a win was his 7th.

While René Arnoux "only" had two poles before his first win, the first pole he converted to a win was his 14th.

Juan Pablo Montoya had pole position for 5 consecutive races in 2002 with only a 3rd and a 4th place to show for it.

Former teammates Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello both looked like equalling Jarier's achievement by scoring 3 poles before their first wins.

Well yes, I wasn't talking about poles until his first win though (he "only" had two like Arnoux, and won from his third), the post might have been unclear. He actually failed to convert 7 straight poles after his first win, but that is dwarfed in comparison to Arnoux, so I didn't bother writing it.

But pole in 5 consecutive races and only a 3rd and 4th place is OTOH something unique and worth mentioning.

Actually, didn't he inherit the lead from Berger at the 86 Austrian GP only for his own car to fail soon after?

Anorakish question: did he lead at the start-finish line? If not, it doesn't count in the statistics. :rotfl:

Reading here says he missed a gear a few laps before passing Berger , and "a few yards" after taking the lead, his engine went out to lunch. ):

edit -spillage beat me to it - with vision - thanks

Well in Italy his engine stalled on the formation lap and had to start from the rear of the grid,... so no in that instance :o
