Sergio Pérez 37 pts
Kamui Kobayashi 21 pts
Felipe Massa 11 pts

Hmm Luca time to stay out of driver selection for the time being  ?

If Ferrari are serious about signing Webber, 36, over a driver who could very well be the greatest talent since Vettel, they can't be serious. Really.

For the rest of time would suit me! I don't believe in the Webber rumours although either would be a great move.

Maybe we should also replace button while we are at it? At least Felipe got a point, in an even slower car it seems!

Clearly the fastest driver of the race after Lewis - at least in the second stint because in the first he was held by railkonnen.

I think what Luca's point was that Perez was too inexperienced to handle the monumental pressure being a Ferrari driver brings in addition to being a teammate to arguably the best driver in Formula 1 at the moment. In that sense,I agree Perez is a bit inexperienced.

I want to see what he can do in a Ferrari car but at the same time I feel that there's a possibility he will be wasted for a 'supporting drivers' role.. especially with rumors that Ferrari is eyeing Vettel for future, that would mean if he does move to Ferrari, chances are he will continue Alonso's role as the #1 driver and that will leave Perez to be forever #2.. at best he would be the next Webber or Massa.

A Sky reporter asked him after quali yesterday if a podium was possible and he started laughing and said no. He wouldn't have expected this result. Great drive - he's much the better of Massa.

Sauber is pretty good at helping a young talented start look alike real deal. Perhaps Perez is one of them.

Massa had a great race, though. I know that he spun off, but if you take that away then he'd finish in 4th minimum.

I do not want Perez in Ferrari until he earns a WDC somewhere else first. Otherwise he'd go in as a #2 and we'd have yet another S. American screwed over by Ferrari. No Thank you, Please.

South American? :rotfl: You won't be popular in Mexico now dammit!

As for Massa, I think he's decent over one lap, Alonso is out of this world and would beat any team mate. Ferrari have screwed up car designs recently and that makes sure Felipe looks really poor.

But the reason myself as a Tifoso would love Pérez is his manners of collecting points - something Felipe has never been able to do. He's always screwed several races up when looking good - especially in his potential title years (07, 08...)

You are right, I should have said Latin America - they are South of us, but on the North American Continent and that causes confusion when we speak of everything America, South of our border.

However, the point is that he has shown the potential to be much much more than another mere "point collector" for Ferrari from Latin America. I don't want to see it. You have to take all of the fight out of a driver in order for him to be a complacent #2 at Ferrari - willing and ready to do whatever is asked of him. That is why it takes a special character to drive as a #2 for them. Why do you think Kiki was so against Nico going there? Perez has so much potential - he should go there when they get a driver who allows true parity (i.e. Raikkonen) or as a #1.

Perez has driven great, don't forget that he was very very unlucky in Spain and Monaco. He could've had another 10-15 points.

What does he have to do before he's considered to be experienced enough? I say let him have a go. It'd likely still be a step up for the team.

what was his strategy tho? if SS>S, he wouldve no way had chance to hold on, considering only Grosjean and to some extent Kobayashi could manage to make SS>S one stop strategy work.

Half the field didn't get a sliced tire on lap 1 in Spain and half the field didn't get hit by a maniac in FP3, followed by a broken suspension in qualifying in Monaco.

I was super impressed how he punished NR for running wide.... on the track he is mature. And he seems sensible enough off it.

Deep down I think its Carlos Slim that they might be worried about coming on board... He would not let his boy be FA's bitch.

can easily say Lewis, Gro, MS, Kobayashi etc had as much or actually more such bad luck.
Such comparison is pointless imo.

You can't ignore the mistake, no, but this is the second race in a row that Massa has looked like he has good pace and is at least competitive. Might not save his seat at Ferrari, but may begin to give people at the midfield teams the feeling he's worth a punt.

Ferrari could sign Webber for 1 season so Perez can gain 1 more year of experience at Sauber before moving to Ferrari to replace Webber in 2014, that wouldn't be a bad choice and let's not forget that Ferrari also still have Jules Bianchi under contract, who will probably race for Force India next year.

PS: I also rate Perez highly but I don't think he is as good as Vettel

Well, one reason for his upturn in pace seem to be that he's driving without any margins. When you gamble like he did today, you are going to make mistakes. Mind you, I think he's doing the right thing, he seemed to had lost the do-or-die attitude at the beginning of the season. Now it's back.

Perez has had some brilliant moments this season but overall, I'm still not convinced he's any better than Kobayashi. I have high hopes for him but he needs to put together consistently strong results if Ferrari is going to seriously think about putting him in the car alongside Alonso. That seat is a big deal.

With the performances Massa is being able to show now, I'm not so sure. Earlier in the year I would have agreed.

If Massa keeps performing well, its going to be a difficult choice for them what to do with him at the end of the year. I'm very skeptical that a kid like Perez is gonna do a noticeably better job. He's good, but I wouldn't give him any sort of 'hotshot' status just yet. Kobayashi still gets the better of him too often.

biggest difference i see between koba and perez, perez is luckier perhaps, hes had things fall into place when theres been the chance of a big result. not saying he didnt earn em ofcourse...

but you would choose the luckier driver as a teamboss anyways

You shouldn't. Because even though he will be a bigger opponent than Massa is(who wouldn't really) at the same time he will be less trouble than Massa that seems to have a life goal on keeping a certain black Mclaren driver from passing him whatever the cost.

Di Montezemolo's comments were surely designed to:

a) put pressure on Massa to perform better for the team's sake this year, albeit in an indirect and diplomatic way that is more likely to motivate him than, say, harsh criticism.
b) make sure that Pérez didn't get too big for his boots after Malaysia, and encourage him to focus on this year's performances with Sauber before he can entertain thoughts of driving for Ferrari next year, with the intended result that he will continue to improve and develop further into a potential replacement for Massa in the medium- to long-term.

On the evidence of the Canadian GP, both of these targets are well on the way to being met.

I think he is a step up on Koby. Next time compare the look of their tires near the end of each stint. I think Perez is better on his tires allowing for more opportunities. Today was an example. By the end of the first stint Koby's tires were clearly getting a dark line just off centre, meanwhile Perez's were the same colour across the surface.

Solid drive by Perez no questions about that but I'd say there is too much hype... few poor races and he'll be forgotten same as he was after Malaysia. Mass will keep improving his shape and getting point for the team so noone will sack him.

I am however really happy for Sauber and hope they will beat Williams for 6th position in WCC.

In all honesty Perez is better off looking for a team where he doesnt partner Alonso. Joining Ferrari would be equal to being Alonso's bitch.
People say Ferrari has a policy of driver equality at the beginning of the season, and when a driver asserts his dominance they back him up, so when perez gets on 67 points while Alonso is at 98, he will have to concede the race win to him, and get effectively demoralized and become a laughing stock among F1 fans for 1 1/2 years.

Sauber has been the better car on balance this season. Do you really think those drivers could dominate Massa for pace in equal cars, like they have this season? Really? Both of them?

Massa is doing fine now with the car improved. He would beat Perez in equal cars anyway.

It's neither opportunistic or silly. It's timely.

Massa is fighting for his career right now and seems to be doing everything in his power to keep Ferrari far away from the WCC. Perez, on the other hand, has done a brilliant job from day one. Bearing in mind how well thought of Kobayashi is, and the threads that here talking about him in terms of WDC's, better cars etc, and now we have the rookie Mexican beating him solidly on a regular basis, I really don't see why it's silly.

Perez is sensible, likeable, calm, fast and smart. He is making the very most of the equipment he has available to him. In fact he reminds me a lot of Ferrari's current #1 driver.

I am not sure how well Kobayashi can be thought of considering the best driver he beat before Perez was Pedro Dela Rosa. To be legitimately well thought of, and not just hype, you have to actually accomplish something impressive and he hasn't. 2.5 seasons in the sport and best finishing position of 5th. Perez seems solid, barely better than Kobayashi though, and often out paced by him, so I am not sure how those are credentials to replace a proven driver like Massa.
