After seeing Vettel on Letterman last night, I was curious.

Also, a fun article to read about the NJ track.

Michael Andretti.

These have all been on Letterman, I presume?

It was pretty late at night when Juan Pablo Montoya smacked the jet dryer in the Daytona 500 this year. Must've been televised, I watched it happen. That count?

All of the drivers mentioned above have also been racing in US, apart from DC and Vettel.

I would think Jackie Stewart has. Perhaps on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, or Letterman in his early days. David Hobbs and Sam Posey (USGP in '71 and '72) are other possibilities.

David Coulthard on the Tonight Show in 2002 around Christmas/New Year time being interviewed by Jay Leno. I clearly remember Leno and Coulthard discussing how nobody had even heard of David Coulthard in the US, Hakkinen moving aside and taking a year off, and that '2002 was going to be his year' to win the world championship! Classic Coulthard.

Irvine. It was that with Letterman in which I learned the phrase "chalk and cheese". If I remember correctly, he also called NASCAR "a bunch of farmers driving around in circles."

:rotfl:

Well they have to write some crap to fill in 300 shows a year.;)

It's all very American.. spending large amounts of money to produce tv shows that are on at midnight, yet somehow over a million people watch. The robot on the sister show (to the late show) is somewhat amusing too. :drunk:

Anyway farmers driving around in circles is actually sprintcar racing. Fancy paved surfaces are for namby pamby west coasters who couldn't bear to get their helmuts muddy, haven't you heard?;)

Loved the Vettel feature thanks for sharing. Reminded me of racing through those Jersey streets with the cops in Grand Theft Auto 4 :D

Vettel actually raced in the US for BMW for 1 race after Kubica's Montreal crash.

I saw Murray Walker on Letterman about ten years ago. They were discussing "Murrayisms".

I enjoyed it as well, but Letterman needs to learn some manners and let his guests finish their sentences. Poor Vettel could hardly finish a sentence without Letterman interrupting. He briefly looked a little annoyed from the constant interruptions at one point and I don't really blame him.

Thats a shame, Vettel showed at the Autosport awards that he is very quick witted and funny. Not the archetypal German F1 champion.

Indeed, Germans are generally not very funny. I remember sitting in a bar in Munich about 12 years ago and the people on the table next to us were laughing their arses off. They then explained how funny it was for 2 blokes to be sitting across each other with mobile phones on the table. They said "you can phone each other to talk". I laughed so much my bottom fell off.

What I found annoying was that the BBC America never showed the Vettel interview they did on Top Gear. I don't know why. Every other F1 guest has been shown. And yes, America loves Top Gear.

The BBC version is always over an hour w/o commercials so they have to cut the America version by 10-15 minutes so they can have commercials and somethings get left out.

...and BBC America has been going back and airing the episodes in full, restoring the edited portions. With commercials, the shows run 90 minutes.

Letterman was none too pleased with the "big balls" comment!

I don't think he meant at the US GP, but racing full time in the US, like Zanardi, Montoya etc.

I don't think he minded it, he just does that faux anger for the cameras, you often see him do it.

It's comedy dude.. :p

The funny thing about Montoya's interview (2005) was firstly talking about penalties he was getting.. but also what he had to say about NASCAR, given how he left F1 midseason in 2006 and has raced there ever since. There is also a really funny picture of Montoya after crashing into his teammate in his last F1 race (Indy 06).. laughing while walking back to the pits..  No wonder it was his last race..

Loved that Vettel one.. he has great humour/personality.
