IZOD Indycar Series Round 10 of 15: Honda Indy Toronto

Posted Image

Important Facts
Exhibition Place, Toronto
85 laps
Lap length: 1.755 miles
Previous Winner: Dario Franchitti/Loki, the god of tricks and chaos
Lap Record: Gil de Ferran, 57.143 (1999)

Words
After a burst of exciting oval races showcasing a nicely shaken-up competitive order, we're back to the road courses again. First stop on the single-file follow-the-leader tour is Exhibition Place, Toronto. "Oh no!", you all cry, "it'll be the Power and Dixon show. And with the F1 and MotoGP on Sunday (not to mention some racquetball tourney) and Daytona on Saturday night I was sort of planning to take breaks from the TV/secret illegal race stream in order to eat meals and make necessary homeostatic adjustments". To which I answer: Yes, it may well be. And your bodily wellbeing does indeed come first. I have three reasons why you should watch anyway, or at least come on this thread occasionally to crack wise about Charlie Kimball and Danica Patrick.

Reason the First: Underdogs, mediumdogs and just plain under-performingdogs
As the saying goes, behind every great driver is an equally great driver in a Dale Coyne car. This principle has gotten a good workout this year -- Will Power's won three road course races this season, but the rest of the podium was different every time. We've seen stunning drives from some of the smaller entries this year: Bourdais at Barber, Pagenaud at Long Beach, Wilson at TMS. We've also been co-opted into the game of guessing which Franchitti will turn up this weekend, which you can also buy in Sato, Briscoe and Kanaan varieties. And finally, we've got some genuine championship contenders who, winning at Toronto, would still be met with a lot of surprise and approving glances. Hinch and Hunter-Reay, your seasons start now. Which brings me on to...

Reason the Second: Championship hi-jinx!
The points battle is close. I would say there are six drivers within a win of Power's 286 points, but this is Indycar and if you have a really bad day and are classified somewhere in the teens or below you still pick up 10-20 points. Even so, there's a clear top-five with well-resourced, consistent teams who will undoubtedly consider themselves inglorious failures if they're not within range of the championship come Fontana.

286 Power (Chevy/Penske)
-3 Hunter-Reay (Chevy/Andretti)
-15 Dixon (Honda/Ganassi)
-25 Castroneves (Chevy/Penske)
-30 Hinchcliffe (Chevy/Andretti)

Franchitti will point to trouble adapting the Dallara to his style as a reason for his being out of it, and will certainly enjoy messing up the pre-eminence of the above drivers in the remaining races.

Reason the Third: The track itself

2011 Race Highlights

As Marshall Pruett explains in his Speed.com preview, drivers have tended to take the "it's not you, it's me" approach to the usual Toronto carnage. Tracks don't cause collisions, racers do. Here's Charlton Heston Tony Kanaan on the Battle Royale that ensued:

"I think some things will speak for themselves," he said. "I think we all should be ashamed for what happened this weekend. I don't see a point to call a meeting, because what are you going to say? It was ridiculous, so I thought about it. I talked with Dario and Justin about sitting everyone down, but that’s just going to stir up more things. It’s going to become a 'you did this... No, I didn’t do that... You should have gave me more room... I gave you enough room' and I think that after the fact, it's not really up to us to make those decisions. We can bash each other all we want, but the decisions on driving and standards is up to Race Control."

Apologies. When I said the drivers all took responsibility and blamed themselves, what I actually meant was that they blamed Brian Barnhart. He's gone now, and his replacement, Beaux Barfield, has this annoying habit of listening to criticism and changing his race direction accordingly. When he's not grappling manfully with his DVR player, Barfield is known to take a rational and communicative approach to enforcing driving standards. So in the event of another Total Systems Failure on Sunday, the Blame Bottle may stop spinning elsewhere.

Enough! When's the race on?
Sunday. Qualifying's on Saturday. Full schedule's below.

Friday, 6th July
11.05-12.05: Indycar practice 1
13.55-14.55: Indycar practice 2

Saturday, 7th July
9.45-10.45: Indycar practice 3
12.10-12.50: Star Mazda race 1
13.05-14.25: Indycar qualifying
16.00-17.00: Indy Lights race (50 laps)

Sunday, 8th July
8.30-9.00: Indycar warm-up
9.50-10.30: Star Mazda race 2
13.00 (plus 30 seconds): Honda Indy Toronto GREEN FLAG

Manifold bits of (compressed) engine news
-- The engine penalties which have plagued the season now look set to move into another gear (enough powertrain puns?). As this article mentions, five entries (including Dixon and Pagenaud) are already on the last of their allotted powerplants. A further six Chevy drivers and five Hondas are already on Number Four. Grid penalties will be extremely punishing at places like Mid-Ohio, Sears Point and to a lesser extent Edmonton and Toronto, but relatively irrelevant in the 500-miler at Fontana. Indeed, having a fresh, one-use engine for the finale may be a positive advantage. Expect confusion.

-- Push-to-pass is back! Presumably this has something to do with better reliability at higher boost pressures, but the main thing is that Indycar is refusing to let F1 make all the running in the gimmickry stakes. We will fight them on the overtake buttons, we will fight them in the night races, we will fight them in the exaggerated tyre degradation...

-- After negotiations with Indycar's technics, Lotus have a new engine! To help them get up to speed with the others, HVM got themselves a private test at Mid-Ohio at the start of the week. Where they, erm, ran the old engine. As this wire article cheerfully notes, De Silvestro's had so little track time that they chose to "work on other areas of the car", because the new engine was "not a priority". Good lord.

That's enough from the OP

And temperatures can be 90F with humidity of 95% - Not comfortable, I have no idea how the drivers tolerate Toronto in July - When I went we all rushed back to my brother's house and sat in the pool for the next 3 hours!

These OPs are getting better and better this year, though I'm not sure if I should be answering the poll.

Right. For us Brits, the show starts at 5:30pm on Sky Sports 2 on Sunday.

Hopefully we'll be getting a good race.

Yeah, that was terrible and seriously hurt the series' reputation as well as that of the drivers.

I can report that it has been mind-meltingly hot here the past few weeks. I have no idea how the drivers will cope with the kind of climate where every time I look out my window I see birds flying along, bursting into flames and then plummeting to earth like Spitfires shot down over Germany.

Yes, because as everyone knows all Canuckistanis live in igloos, have a pet moose and their next door neighbor is a polar bear.

It is awful hot and humid here by anybody's standards bro!

For tomorrow they forecast 35 degrees Centigrade for Toronto, with humidity factor of 40. That's 95 & 104 Fahrenheit respectively for our friends south of the border...

I know its hot, but when your average high temperature in winter is below freezing, you'd think you could take the occasional hot streak on the chin a bit better.

Not 40%, it's the 'feels like' factor, 40 degrees Centigrade. It gets hotter than that, last week we had a 'feels like' 49 day.

In Toronto at least we get two seasons - the freezing snowy one and the hot sticky one. And some rain in between. Every summer over here is very hot and humid, it is the norm.

There's actually a thunderstorm in the forecast for tonight, for tomorrow sunny and freakin' hot, Saturday morning again chance of T-showers and light rain around mid-day (qualifying time), then partially cloudy for most of Sunday with a chance of rain about race time :/

Loved watching Mikey here, he was good - probably could have won a couple of extra times if Newman Haas hadnt been so stupidly loyal to Goodyear...

Will illegally stream this through a 6 pixel feed no doubt.

It's not great but sounds like fairly run of the mill tropical weather.

Living now in Ottawa (5 hours drive from Toronto) and having grown up in Brisbane, Australia, the Canadians do like to carry on about the heat and humidity in summer, but really it is comparatively mild. Similar to Brisbane, but generally 5 to 10 degrees cooler. And don't even talk to me about the bs completely madeup "feels like / humidex" temperatures they like to quote here. Some idiots even answer with that made up number when you ask them the temperature. Seriously, they really would suffer in somewhere truly hot and humid. As for winter, well that they win hands down...

Not really looking forward to this race, street courses are so very meh. However, I did miss there being any race at all last weekend so the series definitely has its hooks in me this season.

Oh and great OP, Risil.

To be fair, whenever I hear someone breaking out the made-up number for the temperature, I feel the same way as Lewis Black does about the wind chill number they drag out during the winter (so we hear it a lot more than the humidex ****).

'Well, it's 27 degrees today, but with the wind chill, it's -3'.

WELL THEN IT'S MINUS THREE, ASSHOLE! I DON'T NEED TO KNOW WHAT THE TEMPERATURE WOULD BE IF CONDITIONS WERE PERFECT!

Ahhh no. The temperature is 27, not -3. The conditions when all taken together may mean you'll dress for -3, but that is not the temperature.

Agreed, with a slight fix.

Because it's never perfectly still and sunny, is it? There's always something--wind, rain, clouds. So when the weather is X ( Y with an adjustment factor), that generally corresponds to what it felt like on other days when it was X, and I dress for X.

I heard ankle/feet injuries but nothing too major. One of the mechanics returned to the team already.

Am I premature or does the Lotus look like a proper engine now? Simona inside a second on a 1:00 lap, whereas they were closer to 2 down on a 1:10 lap at Detroit.

Or, more accurately, Wilson's car wouldn't disengage 1st gear, in order to stop it, Wilson steered into the pit wall to stop the car & minimise the danger - Unfortunately he couldn't miss everybody and clipped 4 pit crew; 2 have gone to hospital for checks, 2 treated at the circuit.

I think you might be right. It's a shame Indycar don't seem to be releasing the trap speeds for practice sessions, except at IMS. The Lotus isn't setting Toronto aflame but the best part of a second down is more or less where you'd expect a Simona-HVM combo to find itself, at least on some afternoons. I suppose the other question to be asked is whether the engine is reliable, but an answer there certainly would be premature.

Useful quotes from JWil, detailing his side of the story:

"I came down pitlane and the car refused to go into neutral," said Wilson. "So I was stuck in first, I couldn't get neutral, and, on top of that, these carbon brakes don't work when they're cold, so I was hard on the brakes and I couldn't stop.

"At the last second I tried to dive into the wall to take speed off, but those guys were there and had no idea I was coming and even diving to the wall I still hit them. I really hope they are OK."

With the Dallara's transmission acting up and heading into a crowd of mechanics, the accident feels uncomfortably like a postfiguration of Maria de Villota's. In this sense, glad that nothing worse came of it. Pitlanes are unpredictable places. Hope that Dragon's pit crew are back fighting fit on Sunday, and that Wilson's got the whole incident out of his mind next time he gets on the brakes into Turn 3.

I'm left wondering why he didn't just let it coast down pitlane iteself. Surely another go round would have been better than ploughing into pitcrew? I will add that it's easy to judge from afar so I don't claim to know better than him at all.

Yeah I don't understand why the car slows down worse in gear(does it have a super high idle?) or he can't pull the clutch in.

On the visual front
-Castroneves still in the Penske yellow
-Marco has a red and white Dr Pepper car
-No idea what Servia is in this weekend, it's a paintjob lucky dip with him

BUT

10+ this weekend and 10+ AT THE NEXT ONE.

What is this fresh nonsense? Well the first one is for the engine change, the second is for going onto her 6th unit since you are supposed to do a season on 5.

It's gonna be a Summer O' Grid Penalties.

Googling finds a website called PaddockTalk which is an absolute dump of press releases -- this one states that Servia will be running Valspar as his primary sponsor. So that'll be black with green trim, like at Texas. Or Negro y verde, for those south of the Rio Grande.

Great, Radoye. Keep the photos coming. :)

Is it true that they've actually managed to hold a complete wet session over there? :stoned:

I'm still at home, watching the F1 qualy - not too much rain here at my place, though down by the lake at the Ex it could be significantly different. It is heavily overcast and i can hear thunder in the distance, and is ~much~ cooler than yesterday.

So i don't really know how did the morning practice go. But with chance of showers for the rest of the day, i would bet they'd all use the opportunity to get the feel for a wet track.
