Nigel Stepney's almost certainly highly controversial account of the Formula One 'spygate' scandal looks set to be published late this year.

Stepney didn't come out of it smelling of roses. Coughlan on the other hand seems to have turned his life around since then. The images of Coughlan after the Williams fire in Spain won him a lot of respect IMO.
It'd be an interesting read, even if you do have to take it with a pinch of salt.

Seems weird to me he 'couldn't find a publisher'. There are loads of them surely. And self-publishing is huge now.

Going to be fascinating if it's credible, anyway.

2007 remains a huge mistery and if this book sheds just a bit of light on it, it will be a good thing.
Many really weird things happened back then and all the parties kept their mouth shut. At the end, McLaren paid by far the biggest price....let's see and read!

"It was rumoured at the time that Ferrari requested the book be withdrawn.
Stepney confirmed that his former publisher had been "put under pressure" by an unnamed party."

Why would Ferrari be the one to put the publisher under pressure when they where the victim? surely McLaren who where found to be the guilty party in copying Ferrari's I.P. would be cast in the worst light by that book?

Anyway, Alonso's account of events will be the best account of that year.

I thought that was canned.. should be extremely juicy and a fascinating read.

I hope Mosley is writing his book as well when he's not busy down in the dungeon.

----

Personally I don't believe for one second the current version of the Stepney story with the white powder and the elementary school grade of a plot.. so I guess I'm already sold to what he's going to reveal as it can't possibly be more ******** than what we were fed with..

The guy was set up, bigtime.

A lot of things happened behind the scenes and no-one was innocent. McLaren was made a public scapegoat but I'm 100% sure there's far more to it. I hope this book will be the first step in the process of making public what exactly happened it 2007 and why did it end the way it did.

Oh for sure.

And with the way the EU works, Stepney will have a very good chance of giving his side of the story with reasonable truth/accuracy.

Expect lots of people from all sides emerging with large amounts of turd on their faces

Haha well, how significant was the data transfer, really? How wicked were the spies?

Monty, Todt and Max conspired to make it seem serious, but then LO! No2 spy has lunch with Max and ends up working for Ferrari.

So there is a story to be told, and Ferrari are NOT going to look good. Monty's 'Silver Ferrari' jibes were a year out of sync with the design process; that tells us how sincere HE was.

In 2007 there was a lot more dishonesty going on outside McLaren than in, and Ferrari were far more perpetrator than victim. Maybe we'll see...

And don't forget the FIA as well. Many events of the season 2007 were simply orchestrated.

In the unlikely case this book sees the light of day I'd advise against any book signing sessions in Italy ;)

Anyway, Alonso's account of events will be the best account of that year.

We'll always be indebted to Fernando whose whistle-blowing finally gave the proof the FiA was looking for.

One thing I have noticed lately is McLaren Ferrari fans these days are pretty matey, probably due to both focussing on RedBull, but I feel since this book will be published, and maybe more books and reaction will come out (there is no way the horse whisperer will stay quiet about this, especially since I imagine not many nice words will be said about Ferrari) that old rivalry could get heated again.

But I believe some of the conspiracy theories are wide of the mark.

Ah now this should be fun, I just wonder how much he knows. Mosley's got a lot of questions to be answered.

It'll probably take a decade for the full story to come out, maybe when Bernie finally writes his memoirs we'll get to hear about all the scumbaggary that went on.

It's worth remembering that Stepney was at Ferrari for a long time. He was a part of the dream team which brought them all those Schumie titles and widely regarded as being responsible for team discipline and as such, a key component of their relatively low-breakdown campaigns.

I reckon he has a lot of love for many of the people in the team and the Ferrari name. There will be only a few of those who he might feel he wants to character assassinate in this book.

If it does get out before christmas it could even have some effect on the upcoming Concorde in the event the deal wouldn't be finalized when the book is released.

Many players could see their stock plummet at a very unfortunate time, having to go on the defensive, making concessions, etc..

I'm probably too much of an optimist, but I hope karma is gonna hit as hard as possible.

Maybe he will reveal that MC was not the only Mclaren's upper mamagement contacr at Mclaren... By the way, is Mclaren still under FIA probation? What would it happen if he reveals Mclaren was more involved in spygate han what they originally admitted?

I don't think Stepney will be aware of the inner workings of McLaren, you would need a Coughlan book for that. Stepney's book will be about Ferrari.

I think the FIA knew it all and orchestrated face-saving outcomes.

As Alonso said 'the outcome of the 2007 WDC was decided outside the racing track.'
All the involved parties most probably know all the details. It's the general public (and possibly Kimi Räikkönen :) ) that's been served a farce.

Maybe Caughan was not his only Mclaren management customer. That could be quite a juicy revelation.

The book is about Spygate. I am sure there will be quite a lot of Mclaren dirty laundry in it.

If the book is published and that's a big IF then I doubt there will be any juicy stuff in it.
It will have been scrutinized by lawyers and baseless allegations will be omitted for legal reasons

At best a bunch of apologetic stuff and of course denial.
The man has been found guilty of sabotage, industrial espionage, sporting fraud and attempted serious injury
Glad he's gone from F1

I'm sure we could all specualte as to what we would like to see in the book. It will all be from Stepney's veiwpoint. McLaren have already been subjected to two FIA hearings, an Italian court case and an investigation of their internal workings by an FIA appointed company (I think tehir name was Quest). Of all the McLaren employees who accessed the info, inlcuding Alonso and de la Rosa the source was always Coughlan. Perhaps Stepney had dealings with more than Coughlan, but I can't see why he would withold such info and how that would be missed by any of the numerous investigations. The only body that has not been put under scrutiny so far is Ferrari. Stepney work with Ferrari for a long time.

Alonso should have been disqualified from using the info he had as advantage of his own. Kimi did knew nothing and to be honest he won't even care, he is by far the most fair driver on formula 1, never taking apart on dirty politics. It was McLaren who got the illegal advantage over this saga and Stepney sabotaged Kimi's car at monaco by himself. It's shame this kind of thing happened as it was one of the best seasons in formula 1 when it comes to top guys driving with huge quality trough the season.

Your post sounds so factual that there's no reason to wait for Nigel Stepney's work to be published. Just keep feeding us those facts and we can avoid a boring summer break from races.

Incidentally, I trust that Stepney's hired himself a good lawyer to fend off McLaren and Ferrari. As for you, no need to worry about lawyers because I doubt that either team will ever take notice of your facts.

And the No 2 spy's mate in all of this was re-employed as a test driver by McLaren in 2010...

I don't expect the book to make Ferrari look good, but then again I don't expect McLaren coming out of this smelling like roses either.

Sabotaged Kimi's car?!? What are you talking about?

Alonso, AFAIK, did absolutely nothing wrong. I hope this book will help in revealing who knew what. Anyway, considering that all the teams do their utmost to spy on all their rivals all the time, I think this affair was hugely overblown. The true motives are hidden - it may be it was a personal vendetta of Mosley's against Dennis.

I dont see him witholding compromising information about Ferrari either. After five years and 100 million fine, any information that would help his case in the courts would have been aired already.

Maybe he will buy himself a Ferrari for Christmas with the money he makes from this book. LOL

My sentiments exactly.

Ecclestone later talked Mosley down from banning McLaren for two years (“bit heavy”, he said) and instead imposing a record $100 million fine. Mosley joked that it was “$5 million for the offence and $95 million for Ron being a twat”.

Yes, a personal vendetta. Well, it's true that any resemblance between 2007 and a proper racing season was completely accidental.
