So, something new for us all to discuss. What are peoples memorable moments at Spa? It doesn't have to be F1, it doesn't have to be an incident on track, it can be anything which occurred during a race meeting in any series at Spa. Feel free to add a video if you like. Mine is race 1 of the 2010 GP3 series race at Spa. Just before half distance, the rain comes pouring down in an unbelievable way at the end of the lap. To say chaos ensues is an understatement.

Unsurprisingly mine involves Senna, but (maybe surprisingly) not one of his wins but the first laps of the 1992 race.

It was the year of the mega williams and nobody could hold a candle to the FW15 around Spa. Customary Spa weather at the start, rain coming in during the first laps. Senna, with no chance at all to win on speed, decided to stay out on slicks for many laps, hoping the rain would stop soon, while everyone else quite sensibly pitted for wets. So he actually led the race for a few laps and even put up quite a fight when the pack caught him.

Ultimately it was all in vain, eventually he had to pit for wets and then 2 laps later the rain did stop...

But the sight of Senna's slick-shot McLaren going through Eau Rouge on a wet track  and that on probably the worst handling McLaren (MP4/7) of that period.

Couldn't find a youtube link, but here it is on F1archives.com, the relevant laps starting from around 12:00.

I was lucky enough to see these both with the naked eye.

In 98 we were in the silver grandstand opposite the old pits. I watched the crash and nudged my mate who was watching Hakkinen and Villeneuve? racing up through Eau Rouge. He started taking photos and half the people in the grandstand were watching the crash and the other half were watching Eau Rouge.

In 2000 we were only general admission and decided to watch the race on the Kemmel straight banking. I even got onto the F1 playstation game DVD.

I'm never usually that lucky.

Nonsense.
There were some great passes everywhere on the circuit. Webber on Alonso, Vettel on Rosberg......

The net result of DRS + Pirellis seems to be that there are more passes everywhere, not just in the DRS zone. It's as though there has been a change in the drivers' mindset, they no longer think that overtaking is something you do in pit stops.

Exceptions are Monaco and Hungary. And before this year, I would have said Valencia.

Last year for me as it was the first time I went to Spa. So they are pub, pub, beer, getting wet and being cold. ;)

In all seriousness though, getting Alonso and Massa to both sign my Ferrari cap, being on Kemmel Straight and watching Lewis and Kobayashi going past us and turning to each other saying "they are going to crash", then coming on here when I got back and seeing people shocked at it. Also sitting on Eau Rouge with a beer after the race.

Other than that 1998 and 2009.

It was my first race track I ever visited and was shocked at what a @#$% hole it actually was. And it still is a #$%^hole.
Stands including the new one are worthless.
No real support entertainment.
Food? only (foul) burgers, fries and wafels.
Toilets.. lets not go there.
Acces... think old silverstone but narrower roads or paved potholes is a better name for what pretends to be a road.
Weather is hopless you go through the range from freezing to monsoon like rain, to scorching heat with in a couple of hours.

But I will be heading there again for my third GP and I do go there several times a year for different events like 24 hours, WEC etc. It is a brilliant track (despite some changes) in a glorious setting! I love it.

Villeneuve and Eau Rouge/Raidillon had some memorable moments over the years, such as '98 and the BAR bet of '99.

Raikkonen going flat out through Panis' engine blow up in '02.

Fisi in '01 and '09.

De Cesaris in '91.

For most New Zealanders and all McLaren fans its got to be Bruce McLaren winning for the first time in a McLaren in 1968. There is group of Kiwis I know going in 2018 for the 50 year anniversary. Spa is a special race for Kiwis.
My highlight was being there in 2010 and watching Hamilton and Button coming thru Eau Rouge in 1-2. Very cool

August 1991, Saturday afternoon, my dad says, why don't we go to Spa ?

We caught the midnight ferry from Dover, got to Spa before the morning warm-up (remember those ?)

Sat on the hill behind the bus-stop, we hear the 1st car fire-up and leave the pits, you could hear it all the way through Eau-Rouge and up the Kemmel straight.

I turned to my friend and said "Thats a Ferrari", a minute later it comes into view, and its Alain Prost in a Ferrari

My friend thought I was a genius :)

P.S. Also the 1st race of a young German, didn't actually see him race, could see the grid from where we were, and he didn't finish the 1st lap.

I went to it last year, best memory was having a grandstand seat at Eau Rouge.

But De Cesaris in 1991 is my main racing memory of Spa, I was so hoping he'd win

Which year was it when Hamilton and Raikkonen had that amazing battle on the last few laps in the wets? Was that 2008? That was one race that had me on the edge of my seat for sure.

Well, almost every second F1 race in Spa is quite memorable
1995 - Hill vs Schumacher on slicks
1998 - Jordan 1-2
2000 - Hakkinen uses Zonta to overtake Schumacher
2001 - Frentzen P4 on the grid in Prost, Famous Irvine - Burti crash, Ralf left on jacks on the grid
2004 - Montoya overtakes Schumacher in Bus stop out of nowhere, first win in Spa by Raikkonen
2005 - Ralf nearly pushes Toyota to the win, Montoya - Pizzonia crash, Sato - Schumacher crash
2008 - Raikkonen vs Hamilton on last laps on slicks in the rain, Bourdais heartbreak from P3
2009 - Fisi on pole, first and only Force India podium
2010 - Vettel crashes into Button, Petrov overtakes both Mercs, chaos on last laps
2011 - Rosberg leads from P4, Webber overtakes Alonso into Eau Rouge, great recovery from Button and Schumacher

Yeah that was exciting especially when the rain came down, hope it rains mid race again this year to shake things up.

2008, intermediate tires, Alonso overtakes four cars, taking advantage of his tire choice. Started 8-th, finished 4-th on the last lap.

1992, Schumi's first win
1995, Schumi showing Hill how to drive
1998, Carnage and DC taking Schumi out (which cost him the title that year)
2000, Mika's superb pass on Schumi, I hated it as an MS fan but it was a great move by the champion.
2001, Burti's crash, I thought he was a goner.
also as much as I love Spa, every time I see Eau Rouge I think of Stefan Bellof.

Whatever, it made overtaking a formality. Webber's pass he risked his life for on Alonso was for nothing because Alonso pressed his DRS button the following lap and knowing it would be a slamdunk. Pointless really.

I demand these photos!! and what do you mean about getting onto the F1 PS game?

For me what stands out: I had been a long time Kimi and F1 fan, and in 2004 I attended my first race in person ever there. Naturally I was not disappointed. All emotional and stuff

I'll look out those photos for you. Not sure how I'd get them on here but one of my friends will know.

It wasn't the game as such but the free DVD of the season that you got with the game.

I'm on it on the banking. I turn round and I'm laughing just as Hakkinen has passed Zonta and Schumacher.

Seems like we might be able have some more.

New contract signed until 2015, with Spa negotiating a cut in the fee.

Great news!
