I know somebody has already posted in the Nostalgia forum but given the technical acheivement that Apollo 11 represented it seems only right to recognize his passing here too.

A Korean War pilot, X 15 test pilot and in charge of the 180 milion bhp Saturn V but he called himslf " I am, and ever will be, a white-socks, pocket-protector, nerdy engineer"

Many tributes and comments have been published , including ones by people like me who still remember exactly were I was that day - in the garden of an englsh pub in my case.

My favourite is " now we have reality TV, then we had Apollo 11"

It's not motorsports related, but the passing of Neil Armstrong merits some discussion. He was the best at what he did and was very humble about it. He may have claimed to be a nerd, but there was no one better when things got hairy. He flew combat missions in the Korean War. He flew the X-15 numerous times in excess of mach 6 speeds. And he flew the Apollo 11 lunar module to a safe landing on the moon's surface manually. Of course his most notable achievement was probably surviving 8 days confined inside a tiny space capsule with noted pugilist Buzz Aldrin!

They were lucky to be where they were and when, but we were even luckier to have them.
