:rotfl: seriously I cringed away at Icx stiff performance!

And Kimi is getting seriously nervous waiting for his turn to be interviewed....

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It depends on who's doing the talking. It's better than the soulless stuffy soundproofed media room.

They're sooooo cringeworthy. Do not like at all. And it's not even that it's too 'polished' and 'corporate'... it's a shambles and wheeling out old drivers to ask inane 'anyone could ask those' questions is just dumb.

I also don't like that the flags are not real flags anymore, and I think that's a bit disrespectful to the national associations these drivers compete for.

In the media room you generally get a well-respected print or broadcast journalist asking pertinent questions though, not Jacky Ickx talking rubbish (no offence to Jacky, you're a legend mate!)

Takes away the human element of the podium preparation.

The whole thing is a complete shambles and needs to be ditched.

More stiff stuff please but not with Icx or Placido.
It was working well with Lauda and Sir Jackie.

I am sure Ickx is great at delivering a speech at an FIA Gala evening.... but podium interview... he looked a bit out of place.

That I am sure of as well, which is why this thing is so stupid. He's clearly been wheeled out on a whim, without much time to think of or write down decent questions.

With all due respect to Mr. Ickx, it sounded like he was reciting what an earpiece was telling him to say, and with a bit of difficulty. I miss the old press conference room--it had a very official air to it that the podium interviews are lacking, in my opinion.

It's good for the trackside fans who have paid more than those at home to see the drivers up close. I am all for giving those fans more for their money.

The podium interviews are not the problem. It's the choice of interviewers. They need to get someone who knows how to conduct an interview, which starts with asking questions. You don't tell the driver about his race and ask him to comment. You ask the driver about how his race went, and then you follow up on interesting points.

Ickx did it the wrong way. He basically described Jenson's race to him and then expected something meaningful to come out of it. Jenson to his credit managed to engage the crowd and make something of it, and similar stories for the other drivers. What Ickx should have said was something like, "So Jenson. How did the race go? How does it feel to win this Grand Prix?" and leave it at that.

On TV it's getting abit boring and sometimes clumsy I admit, but it must be a nice little treat for those attending at the venue I imagine. Not that it makes big difference, but still good to see the real top 3 finishers on the podium abit longer. Reward the audience more, why not.

I think it is a very good idea. Good for the fans at the track. They just need a good interviewer, and we are quite short on that. Usual bland your thoughts on the race, your feelings right now, won't cut it. Vettel loves it as he always does!

I miss especially lifting up the flags. But I think podium interviews are a good thing, esp. for fans at the track. But maybe they could continue the press conference at the press room with a professional journalist.

The podium interviews are a good idea. Let a proper journalist do it. Watch Will Buxton conduct the GP2 interviews and you'll see.

Those interviews would only really work if they got Clarkson or someone like him to do them. "So, Kimi, why didn't you win? Sebastian, why were you so slow yesterday?"

I like the idea, but interviewers are mostly awful, there is a reason why that kind of questions should be asked by journalists and not ex drivers.

I agree with Jeremy Clarkson, splendid idea!

To Jenson:"Jenson, about Spa - what was God thinking when he gave this place to Belgium? It should be ours!"

To Sebastian:"So you thought you could win this one from Jenson? … the last time someone was as wrong as you, was when a politician stepped off an aeroplane in 1939 waving a piece of paper in the air saying there will be no war with Germany ”

To Kimi: “There is a word to describe your car: it begins with ‘s’ and ends with ‘t’ and it isn’t soot. So what are you going to do about it?"

It´s terrible. When race ends, I want to hear racing questions and comments, not generic "How you feel" questions.

It' not an interview. Both in Hungary and Belgium we get a monologue and three how do you feels. Having the interview there is fine, it just should be doneby someone who can. Sir Jackie I think did a fine job.

no it wasn't (well maybe to fuddy-daddy's), this is much better, but they have to pick the right people, with interviewing skills instead of just famous names.

I think the podium interviews are excruciating to watch and certainly not as insightful as previously. Drivers don't know what to say half the time.

Smile +1. That would cause fireworks, something the FIA doesn't like to see, hehe.

Too true, and it works ok in lower formulas, grass roots and motorcycle racing.
It's good to see things look a bit rough around the edges (just like a lot of the circuits are in real life).
F1 has become too sanitised and it sometimes shows in the comments from the modern fans.

I don't think the old format was working either. It had become extremely staid IMO.

There was an interesting chat going on between the three podium guys in the cool down room today. Maybe they could just send in someone like Martin Brundle or Gerhard Berger (i.e. somebody with a good informal manner - I am sure there could be other suggestions) to chat with them before the podium ceremony - grid walk style (together or individually).

I'd read that they still do a traditional style press conference, but the British tv guys don't show it.

It's strange that after quali they don't grab the guys in parc ferme while they are hyped up and do something similar

I wouldn't mind them so if it was one of Kravitz/Pinkham/Mckenzie/Anderson/Brundle/Coulthard doing them. Someone with actual media experience would make these much more bearable.

So far we've had Stewart/Lauda/Domingo(?) & Ickx so perhaps Patrese in Italy or someone along those lines. Laudas blunt no-bullshit personality worked well in Germany in not shirking from asking awkward questions and making Vettel squirm. However Domingo and Ickx were terrible at it - no offence to the legend that is Ickx but I could have made a cup of tea in the time it took him to ask his 'questions'.

Anyway unlike most I'm all in favour of interviewing the drivers on the podium but its being done wrong. Hopefully they can hand it to a professional interviewer soon. I hate the new style flags though. Tacky as hell.

who cares about flags or pieces of wood/plastic with national signs on it, the drivers represent a part of my universe, I don't care where they really come from.

They should ask the questions by a de-humanized mascot or robot, would reduce the cringe factor to zero and be pretty funny.
