i don`t now stuff like you guys do but i know compression to be a big hp gain.

if you look at R bikes and the CR up to today. they have gone from 130-150hp in the year 2002ish to 180-190 today.

11:1 around vs 13:1

that and some minor rpm gains. (that said i think that gain is due to CR)

There are ofc more in the background like better injection, cam systems and intake tech but thats minor details?

Des - I am not exactly sure what you are saying ("specific torque metric?") but I think BMEPs and thermal efficiencies have improved enormously since the "early/mid 20th century". TE/BMEP is linked directly to the compression ratio and typically early/mid 20th century CRs were in the 5:1 to 8:1 range - now they are around 10:1.
I had a 1937 Austin 7 Ruby which I think was 5:1 CR. It would refuse to start if the petrol was a few weeks old.

I have a 2003 Falcon that is the same!! That is a comment on the crap quality fuel however!
Actually A7s like a bit more compression too but the bent paperclip they use for a crank does not like it much, nor too many more RPM.
Though put all the good bits in them and they can be a healthy little beast for their age,,, except most of the components are decades newer.

Not quite on topic but if you want a REALLY large capacity dual overhead cam V-8 then Ford was building thousands of them in the 1940's

Now - question to Magoo - is there any evidence of one going into a road or race car - surely one of those at war surplus prices would have tempted some hot rodder somewhere

I think I have seen on You Tube recently one of those engines fitted to a Mustang.

There's not much more to add beyond what has already been supplied.
