Kimi is not only in stealth mode concerning the way he moves up the 2012 WDC - while Lewis is creating a lot of big splash concerning his contract negotiations, we know only that Kimi most likely will not drive for Lotus in 2013:

MTV3: Lotus Is Preparing for Raikkonen's Departure
12 September 2012

Posted Image

According to an MTV3 source the Lotus team is preparing for the departure of Kimi Raikkonen.

http://www.mtv3.fi/u...ikkosen-lahtoon

The article goes on to speculate that Kimi might be going to McLaren to fill the void left by Hamilton. So nothing new there... Obviously if Kimi is leaving it means he's going to a bigger team and that means either the rumored McLaren, or the slightly less rumored Ferrari.

It is a typical mark of the Finn and his management team that they keep quiet about things, while Lewis and XIX always seem to have a talent for creating a drama with whatever they do.

So who do you think Kimi Raikkonen will be driving for in 2013?

We have practically no clues, yet it seems that Kimi is poised to profit from this situation in his typical quiet way.

Thus, the second poll question: who do you think will come out as a winner of this merry-go-round in 2013, Kimi or Lewis? That means, who will make the better team choice, bringing the respective driver more success in 2013 (and possibly the years that follow)?

I think Lewis is going to Mercedes and consequently Mclaren may try their best to get Raikkonen, wich in my view is probably the best driver to fill in Lewis seat.

The wich is the winner part is a bit complicated for me...I believe Mercedes might have a competitive car next year and that should be enough to get Lewis in contention for the WDC, but I also believe that Raikkonen should do well at Mclaren (perhaps this might be due to some "nostalgia" of 2005).

Either way, if both moves come to happen I think it'll be great for both drivers, both teams and the sport and the fans in general. Everybody needs a bit of a stir in F1 once in a while...

If Lewis really does go to Mercedes, I think it will be an uphill struggle in the first season. I've been supporting the team since the Honda days and they have improved since then, but they're stuck in limbo now. I'm even a little wary that the "super team" of engineers that Mercedes hired won't improve their car too much. Mercedes have lots of great names, but for some reason things just aren't coming together. As a fan of the team I'm very frustrated by the constant breaking of parts (especially DRS) on their cars.

Assuming Lewis goes to Mercedes and Kimi does leave Lotus to head to McLaren, I think that Kimi would be the clear winner by a mile, at least for 2013.

I'd be surprised if either happens to be honest, it would be an odd move for Hamilton to move to Mercedes when McLaren is so competitive and Merc haven't shown enough promise, and similarly I can't see Raikkonen going back to McLaren with all its sponsorship demands when he seems to want to and does appear to be really enjoying his return to F1 with Lotus.

However, the move to McL for Kimi on paper is the more attractive one, but who knows what will happen next year - maybe Hamilton and Brawn know something about the 2013 Merc that no one else does.

There are three top teams (Ferrari, McL and RB) so if Lewis go to Merc, he making a huge mistake imho.
These teams going to produce a winning car, at least sometime over a period over a few years time.
Other teams lack the resources and/or know how and/or strategy.
Just look at Toyota, regardless of resources they accomplished nothing. Same tendency with Merc.
Lotus has the know how but lack resources and strategy, so Kimi better move on whenever an opportunity arise.

It's not a coincidence that Alonso, Lewis and Vettel are where they are! Top teams and top drivers.
Very likely the WDC going to drive a car from one of these three teams. 2012 and in the future.

I dont think Kimi going to get back to Ferrari or to a mid field team (Sauber, FI, Williams). No it better be McL or RB!
Vettel&Kimi would be a nice pairing  For not for 2013.

I find both moves logical, Merc can pay Lewis more, and give him either greater sponsorship freedom or help marketing him more as a celebrity themselves. They are better placed to be competitive than McLaren from 2014 onwards with the reset of the new rules, given the bright engineering team and the better knowledge of the new engine built by their own company. Finally, the internal relationship between Lewis and the team seems to have turned sour, or at least more tense than it used to be up until here.

As for Kimi, McLaren is more competitive than Lotus and should be able to pay him slightly more, too. Relationships may be an issue but Ron Dennis is not in charge of McLaren anymore, this is a slightly more relaxed McLaren than the one Kimi left.

I'm starting to think it will happen.

I'd certainly be excited to see Kimi in a top car again (and I feel as a fan to be lucky with the competitiveness of Lotus this season.)

However, it's really going to be a shock when Lewis leaves Mclaren. I can't believe he'd mess that up so badly...

Not really rumoured. It was nothing but a wild guess made by Heikki Kulta of TS. Kimi himself said on Saturday in Monza that while he's happy to be at Lotus this year he's not certain yet if he will choose to continue there next year.

I'd prefer to see him stay at Lotus. I'm not a Lotus fan, and certailnly no Boullier fan, but it's fun for me to see top drivers spread out amongst more than just the top 3 teams.
And I like where he's putting the car this year. If he can eke out a win in the Lotus (not necessarily the fastest car out there) it speaks more to his talent IMO.
Stay Kimi, at least for another year.

I assume it's Lotus next year but the second question is impossible to answer. Winner?

I also think it's gonna resolve by Singapore, although the Schumacher conundrum will play out finally only in October, as announced. My feeling is that drivers like Kimi and Michael will want to have everything in place before anything is announced or utterly wild speculations make the round, while Lewis and XIX go the opposite route.

Really interesting where they are going to end up.

My answers to the poll questions are

1.) McLaren

2.) Kimi Raikkonen

yet I have a very strange inkling that if Lewis stays indeed at McLaren, Kimi might go to Mercedes instead. Of course, this would be the greatest irony one could think of - Kimi coming the second time to a team of Michael Schumacher, and presumably as the designated #1 driver (as Lewis will indeed be the #1 if he goes to Mercedes).

I can think of Ross Brawn being very keen on finding the last piece of the jigsaw, and if it is not Hamilton, it might well be Raikkonen. Ross might be wondering what a real top driver of the class of 2012 can do, and I don't think either Schumacher or Rosberg can be considered to be in the same league as Alonso/Hamilton/Vettel/Raikkonen.

Also, there would be a perfect symmetry in F1 if the four teams that should be the strongest have one of the four strongest drivers each, e.g. Alonso/Ferrari, Vettel/Red Bull, Hamilton/Mercedes and Raikkonen/McLaren.

To conclude, I don't think we will see driver combinations like Alonso/Vettel, Alonso/Hamilton or Vettel/Raikkonen anytime soon. It would be somehow against the spirit of the game, and also there is Bernie who would have some say in influencing the distributions of top drivers behind the scenes.

Kimi wont go to McLaren it is too corporate for him and they wont pay him enough, on top of that they wont agree on PR stuff just like last time. Kimi will stay at Lotus and Lewis will in my view go to Mercedes leaving McLaren left with a tricky choice.

We should remember that Kimi has a contract with Lotus until the end of 2013. Make sense that could have a clause in his contract compensating economically to the team if he leaves a year before. His contract is for two seasons, not season and option. Doesn’t seem Kimi a driver forcing a drama to leave. I think he will continue at Lotus.

but who knows what will happen next year - maybe Hamilton and Brawn know something about the 2013 Merc that no one else does.

1.Getting away from Whitmarsh should be a good enough reason for Lewis to move away from McLaren. No point working for a manager whose KPIs include making him look ordinary.

2.McLaren giving Lewis a pay cut whilst it gave Jenson a payrise despite Lewis beating his teammate in two of the three years is another reason Lewis should move on. Yes McLaren wins races but many of those have come from Lewis anyway. If Lewis has to make sacrifices, it should be for a team that is worth it not a team that runs a policy that does not prioritise driver objectives like winning WDCs, keeping trophies and sharing equal responsibilities when hunting for championship points.

3.Yes Mercedes have won only one race, but they are a team on the up. Besides, Hamilton's skills could well push Mercedes from the mid top tens to the podium and possibly more wins. In other words, Mercedes could be looking this bad because it doesn't have a Lewis-calibre driver and McLaren could well be looking this good because it has Lewis. In addition, Brawn is on a strategic mission to build winning capacity at Mercedes. He has top engineers and now needs top drivers. Cars don't make themselves. People make cars and if the people are good they will eventually make a good car. In short, the team of engineers that Brawn has gathered will eventually deliver.

4.Lewis needs to break free from McLaren and become his own man. That is risky but so is staying at McLaren. Cést la vie or we would all be bunked up in our houses not venturing outside. A move to Mercedes gives him an opportunity to work with a manager that has won 8 championships in the last 20 years and a manager that has won championships with three different teams. It gives him an opportunity to get rid of the baggage he has gathered at McLaren over the years. And if he will be driving alongside Schumacher for two years, it also gives him an opportunity to learn from the best driver in the history of the sport.

Toyota had the resources but not the right people. There in lies the difference with Mercedes. Ross Brawn is a multiple championship winning manager with three different teams no less. He has gathered around him a team of race winning and championship winning engineers. And looks like he has money in the bank. There is only one piece missing - a top flight driver. With all due respect, Nico cannot be ranked in the same category as Vettel, Lewis or Alonso. Hell, you can argue Brawn doesn't even rank Jenson Button that highly despite the Englishman winning the title for him. Otherwise why did he not renew his contract despite JB asking for a lower salary than MS. Schumacher ofcourse is top flight, but he is not superhuman and has grown past his prime.

As Brawn used to say when at Ferrari, everything has to be perfect - engineering, driving, strategy and race operations. Behind each of these functions, are people. If a team has the right people leading each of these functions, winning championships is a matter of when not if. Where Ross Brawn sits, he feels he has the right teams in engineering, strategy (led by himself) and race operations. By bringing in Lewis, he ticks the driving box, sits pretty and waits for 2013.

no, the second year of Kimi's contract is only option...this has been recently confirmed by Lopez,Boullier and Kimi. they had performance clauses on that contract and they are already fullfilled but they haven't used and signed new deal yeat.

Lotus: Kimi + Grosjean

2014

Johnny Herbert "There's a lot of young drivers around, Paul di Resta would be one, but I would think: 'why not get Kimi Raikkonen back?"

Ted Kravitz: "McLaren have to tread quite a fine line because on the face of it there isn't really anyone else apart from Lewis Hamilton who can win multiple grands prix and World Championships out there who the team can just pop into their driver line-up alongside Jenson Button. That's McLaren's problem. They have to keep Lewis Hamilton because he's shown them that he's their best chance of winning a championship.
"The question is who else knows how to win a World Championship? I'm not sure that Paul di Resta or Nico Hulkenberg do yet, although I'm sure they will during their career, but Kimi Raikkonen certainly knows how to win a World Championship."

Johnny Herbert and Ted Kravitz putting some more weight behind the Kimi-to-McLaren-scenario...

It will be embarrassing for Kimi fans for that to happen again.

I can see Mercedes being happy to sign Kimi. I seriously doubt Kimi will beat Rosberg regularly. I'd imagine they would be very close in speed and earn the team's WCC points in the proportion of 50% +- 10% each.

As Brawn used to say when at Ferrari, everything has to be perfect - engineering, driving, strategy and race operations.

How come in three seasons Mercedes still cannot hire decent suspension/tyre engineers to fix their tyre wear issues?

Even Toyota fixed their poor handling over kerbs after only about one season. Similarly it took RBR only one-two seasons to get fast at Monza and Spa (although without EBD, flexy wings and special engine maps they are a bit crap again...).

embarassing?? i follow kimi long enough to know what he capable of!! In quali they might be close, but im 100% sure rosberg will be no where near kimi in race performance!! Kimi has been brilliant in sunday, his racecraft, tyre management, and most notably his superb reflex allow him to avoid crash and also enhance his ability to overtake!!

THe only drawback of kimi 's comeback will be his quali speed, yet to recover, but surely getting better and better~! And after having 1 season to get back into rhythm, kimi will beat rosberg in quali as well!! Provided merc can give him the steering system he wants unlike Lotus that failed to provide him the right tools!!

I also think that it will not be so easy for Rosberg to beat Kimi - unless Merc will develop their car into Nico's direction, like Ferrari did for Felipe starting with the French GP 2008....

Last I heard, they are hiring (all kind of technical personnel), however I cannot comment about requirement being "decent".

seems like very few of the big moves actually play out as expected...

Fittipaldi-Copersucar
Villenueve - BAR
Schumacher-Ferrari almost did not pan out (5 seasons)
Montoya - McLaren
Alonso- McLaren

although Kimi - McLaren seems like a good fit.

edit : Montoya is the forgotten man of F1 isn't he

Posted this on the KR thread..Thought its equally relevant here as well..

Also what id like to add is the ''trickiness'' of the current situation.Lets outline the major/big teams right now..

1.Mclaren.2.RebBull.3.Ferrari ........ i wont include Mercedes because of their recent poor form.

Mclaren might be interested in Raikkonen only because there will be a void created by Hamilton leaving..that void in all probability will be filled out and not available anymore same time next year..

We can safely assume he wont be headed back to Ferrari after his first spell..Redbull isnt likely at all to me as they wouldve signed him up in 09 or 10' if they wanted him that badly.(Ofcourse Vettel could go to Ferrari and thatll change things but thats just too much speculative right now).

So he needs to consider the fact that this might be the one golden opportunity he gets..Mclaren will in all probability be right up there at the front again with the tech regulations almost staying the same next year..Sure Lotus isnt exactly bad but compare it to how dominant Mclaren has been this year specially lately...

Next year after that is 2014..when Regulations change drastically meaning a return of Turbos....and whenever a major change happens,id put my money one a big name every time to get it right as compared to Lotus who do not have the same resources and have been midfield at best for the past many years...

In short,If he continues at Lotus in 2013,then he will most probably finish his career there.,which might not seem like a very good idea if Lotus gets ''outdated'' by the bigger teams next year and then struggles in 2014...IMO that is...i think he likes where he is right now..but that may change very quickly if Lotus drop down to their ''usual'' levels.

Didn't he negotiate with them for a 2010 drive? Negotiations broke down because he wanted too much (essentially, iirc, because his Ferrari pay out was conditional on him not racing in F1 - so McLaren needed to offer a salary + an amount equal to that Ferrari payout for it to make financial sense for Raikkonen to join them). But if he was willing to negotiate with them, surely the "too corporate" thing wasn't an issue.

I think too much is made of Raikkonen's desire to avoid "corporate" McLaren and sponsor commitments. If he thinks it'll give him the best chance to get more wins, and will match or better Lotus' $, I expect he will move to McLaren.

Thats another factor, the Ferrari payout wouldn't be relevant this time around, I'd said in another post that perhaps those talks held in 2009 might be a starting point for talks for 2013, I was just looking for details of Jensons contract and something has just occured to me, we often see Kimi strolling around the paddock in shorts and a team top, I can't recall Jenson or Lewis wearing anything other than full corporate gear in the paddock, i may be wrong though.

As we've seen with Lotus the no rallying clause wasn't a deal breaker so that can also probably be discounted, but then it might be used to offset some of the corporate loading, and while perhaps to much is made of that, i dont think there's much doubt that the McLaren drivers are probably worked harder than any others, I think even Jesnon was looking for reduced workloads in that area last year, and he doesn't seem to have the aversion to PR that Kimi has.

I think the primary question is, would McLaren want Kimi ? My guess is that they would at the very least strongly consider him, the rest would be up to him and i think it could go either way.

Spa 2012 Pit Radio
Engineer- Kimi, we need to pick up the pace a little.
Raikkonen- Give Me More Power, then.... give me more power!!

Some extra Mercedes engine Power would be handy for him. Kimi Raikkonen has already done enough to repay Lotus by getting them consistently on the podium, and the team is still talked about in both Constructors & Driver's Championship this far. Raikkonen has done his part by making Lotus F1 Team as an attractive option for sponsors & media coverage they got this year. Even Grosjean will have gained a lot from Kimi's races.

If the Mclaren or Mercedes offer comes, Kimi will/should take it.

I consulted my two cents and they said he'll be driving a Lotus. Captain Obvious tweeted that he agrees.

From what I've seen I don't expect Kimi to move - it's looking more and more likely that he'll be on a binding contract with Lotus next year, so whoever takes him will have to pay. Can't see Ferrari paying to get him out of a contract after they paid so much to lever him out of one. And given the rumours about the Lewis/McLaren problems being primarily about money (or lack of it!), don't see McLaren paying either. That leaves Kimi sitting in a Lotus next year ... and IMO, that could actually be a good place for him to be given how they've done this year.

So for poll part 1: Kimi stays at Lotus.

On to part 2: we have Lewis and his options. McLaren or Mercedes. Assuming both come out with cars at least as good next year, Lewis wins either way. The McLaren - when on-song - has been the best car this year in the most races. They've thrown away a lot of points and flattered both Alonso and Red Bull in the process. The other option with Mercedes ... well, let's just say I doubt we've seen the best that car has to offer every weekend. Exhibit A: Schumacher's been solid in the second part of his career, but there's no way MS at the height of his powers would get beaten by Rosberg. Exhibit B: Rosberg's good, and got better since his first year, but IMO he's on a level with Webber: brilliant on his day, but unlikely to string it together for long enough to be a year-in, year-out title contender. Hurts me to say it as a Webber fan, but both of those exhibits imply that there's performance being left in the garage more often than not. Stick a Lewis, Vettel, or Alonso in the Mercedes and they'd be appearing ont he podium far more frequently - to the point of being outside title contenders (same as Kimi is now, but pushing Kimi down).

So for poll part 2: Lewis wins, regardless of which team he picks.

Why do people over complicate things when it comes to Kimi, he is probably the least complicated famous sportsman I can ever recall.

Brief to management, " I don't care where I drive next year just make sure I am not bored on Sunday's " end of brief.

Is this the same as you predicted Kimi winning Spa and fighting for podium in Monza?
