I've just started work for a year in Hong Kong and have suddenly been struck by the urge to go to Korea for the race weekend. It's been an epic season and I haven't had the chance to go to a race in 2012, and I'm a bit worried that I'll regret missing out. I was considering Japan but it's just a bit too soon, the tickets are far more expensive and I was there visiting a friend only a couple of months ago. Korea seems more affordable, a bit wackier and also a race that is less likely to last in F1 for the long term.

Prices on BookF1.com (not sure if that's usually considered the best place) are £131 for three day grandstands and £75 for race day grandstand, which seems good value given it's usually a once a year thing (maximum).

My concern is all the additional costs. The cheapest return flights from HK to Gwangju are around £350. That doesn't factor in getting to the circuit and accommodation. I've been to Silverstone a couple of times but haven't camped yet (definitely on the agenda though) so I wouldn't feel confident doing it for the first time in Yeongam. Package deals seem a possibility (Waegook came up a couple of times).

The other thing is that only a few of my friends are F1 fans and they are back in the UK; I've only been in HK for a couple of days so I don't really know anyone yet, meaning I would almost certainly be going by myself. It could potentially be a unique experience but it could also be an expensive and lonely way to spend a weekend.

Any opinions that may sway me in one direction or the other?

Hi!

I'm going too, from Melbourne. I'm renting a car, which will be my place to sleep if I don't find something cheap and close to the circuit.

I'm in grandstand G, ticket is on its why as we speak. Ordered on gpt.at, at an okay price.

We can keep each other company if you want, I'm a cool 24yo French guy :p

It's got to be worth the trip for adventure value!

Also, if you are into your motorsports, make sure you get acvross to Macau in November for the Formula 3/World Touring car race. Best race weekend i have ever been too.
