Backmarkers shouldn't be allowed to unlap themselves, makes no sense.

They should be blueflagged behind the safety car, and allow all drivers who are a lap ahead of them to go past.

Would be MUCH QUICKER.

It came about after the frustration of watching Vettel get lucky time after bloody time last year and get a few backmarkers between him and 2nd every restart.

I prefer it this way.

It's a new implementation of an existing rule if you like.

The main problem i see with this is that lapped cars would basically get one lap for free. Saving a lap of fuel and tyres shouldn't make that much of a difference for the backmarkers, but theoretically it would still be a small advantage compared to the guys who didn't get lapped (yet). I think they could still try to this, SC phases are always kinda unfair anyway.

They wouldn't be unlapping themselves, so they wouldn't be getting any "free" laps.

Agree!

We lost laps of racing waiting for the cars to catch up to back of SC train. ... blue Flag them and they will still be a lap down so no advantage to them.

They should do what IndyCar do and send lapped cars through the pits, that way they're out of the way and it only takes a jiffy rather than an extra 2 or 3 laps.

I re-read the OP and i'm a bit confused over what you actually suggest. Lapped cars are always behind the cars a lap ahead of them - so what you want is to drop lapped cars to the end of whole field? That would be terribly unfair. An unlapped car ahead of the SC would gain a whole lap on another car that was potentially just seconds behind in the race. The only way to keep that fair would be to drop them to the back, but counting that as unlapping.

The rule is the way it is because Formula 1 misinterpreted the wave-around rule in NASCAR and Indycars. Lucky dog aside, nearly lapped cars can get their lap back in those series under caution, but only if they're physically in front of the leader before the restart. That way you ensure that it is the leader who restarts the race, and not a car on the tail end of the lead lap. NASCAR and Indycar doesn't let every lapped car pass the lead lap cars, that's just dumb.

They have done it before: result waiting for 2-3 laps. That wasn't good, so they cancelled the rule. And now, dementia crept in and we have this rule back.

It takes one straight or pit lane to send backmarkers to the back of the field, but 3 laps to let them by. They can bring everything up to racing temps and when they return at the back of the field, they have a clear advantage.

I'm just waiting situation where some top runner loses a lap early, then causes accident where he escapes damage, but other car gets damaged enough to bring SC. And then get a lap back due to that incident.

didn't that happen to Hamilton in 2007 germany? he was 2 laps down i think and because of SC he got one lap back...cant really remember.

It should've gone in at least 1 lap earlier than it did, and probably 2. For me, once the lapped cars are allowed through, then at the end of that lap, bring the SC in. If the track is clear for them to be allowed through, it's clear for them to go back to racing. Doesn't matter if they're way off the back of the pack, just get on with racing. It adds completely unneccesary laps behind the SC as it is.

Not really. He was on the lead lap when he went off, lost a lap when his car was recovered, then got the lap back, and he was on the lead lap. McLaren then did stupid choice pitting him for slicks and therefore he didn't catch the queue.
