Button almost harpooned Vettel who was playing yo-yo during the SC period.

For Vettel potentially breaktesting/Button misinterpreting Vettels action at the restart.

It would be very dumb to give penalties to either one of them for the incident.

Biscuits. Charlie went a bit overboard on the Viennese whirls, and thought Vettel might appreciate them. Button went along cos he's a sucker for a chocolate hobnob.

All over twitter, I doubt anything will happen, no collision, race result not affected.

I'm guessing this must be their near-collision during the 1st safety car period.
Seb and Jenson both getting ready as the safety car was about to pull in, they had a very near moment around turn 15 if I recall correctly.
Jenson was then heard complaining about it on the team radio.
Can't think it can be anything else.

Vettel will be reminded not to drive erratically in SC restarts. Button will be reminded that even though you should keep close to the guy in front, there is such a thing as being too close. Both will shake hands. Then there will be cake.

F1 season run ins are fixed to an extent, so I think RBR will be punished because they dont want Vettel winning title again and FIA have been against RBR for a while now.

That would be a tad unfair, but fingerboy behaved like a brat so maybe demote him to 2nd place.

I suspect it will be to just give them a talking to. The driver in front has a right to control the pace, but if he gets harpooned it's not helpful to be in the right. It's not like these cars have a brake light is it?

I agree. So if Vettel doesn't win the title I take it we'll all agree there's an asterisk to it?

If Vetter gets a pen for that i may be done for f1 this season. He did nothing wrong. Button accelerated when he could see Vettel was not travelling quick at all.

Can't see there being any penalty, possibly a reprimand, but doubtful.

I expect Vettel to be given a reprimand and that's that. Nothing to see here.

the thing is button has done this (erratic under safety car) many times and not been penalized, so the stewards can either say button set precedent so reprimand, OR they can say, look its been warned about before, 20 sec penalty.

I thought that was a sure penalty. Even very recently they were clearly told the leader cannot change momentum more than once after the SC pulls in. It was written precisely to avoid what Vettel did. At the very least, Vettel needs to be seriously warned.

Actually Button doesn't do erratic safety car starts - he does like to slow the pace dramatically before taking off, but there is always a constant slowdown, not speeding up and then breaking - that's the difference.

But I think no harm no foul, it was no Japan 2007.

China 2010 was still very dangerous.

Nothing will come of that I think.

I would suggest a small penalty for Alonso to take off smug on his face in pre-podium waiting room, and large one for Hamilton just to make him feel welcomed.

Surely no issue here. Vettel slowed down but Button made it look worse than it was by locking a brake. Would be amazed and disgusted if either driver picked up a penalty for this

There's not really an issue. That sort of thing happens regularly up and down the field when the cars bunch up for SC restarts.

I believe the rule in 2012 is that if you complain about Vettel over the radio, he will be given a penalty. Button is simply trying to invoke the "Alonso" ruling for his own benefit.

There should not be a penalty.

There should however be a reprimand. Vettel have been there and seemingly needs reminding.

"Dude do NOT play the accelerate, brake, accelerate game while behind the safety car. Next time you WILL be penalized"

Then at Japan driver meeting tell all drivers.

"Just so we are clear about this, Sebastian got an official reprimand, all of you are hereby reminded and if anyone play this game rest of season, you will get an immediate drive through!!"

That should fix it.

So the drivers should be forbidden to get heat into their tyres and brakes?

True because button avoided vettel unlike vettel with webber ;)

Vettel has another sh1te one in 2010 when lewis had to go off track I think, as he also had to do in china 2010 behind button.

None of which wouldn bother me if there hadn't been so much whining in Fuji when Lewis had a much harder job.

I see where this one is going. Button complains in Hockenheim, Vettel gets penalty. Alonso complains at Monza, Vettel gets penalty. Button complains in Singapore...

Please, do hand Alonso a second place. Or why not make it a win while you're at it, to remove any doubt about who is supposed to win this year's championship.

They really want Alonso to win the title this season, can easily see a penalty for vettel here.

I think button's point about 'when you go you go' is a fair one though, the second driver is going to want to stay as close as possible to the first, he can't be expected to be ready to brake when the guy in front steps on it, that didn't look like mere tyre warming to me and clearly not to jenson either.

Clearly there shouldn't be any penalty but things being clarified would be good.

You can see Vettel slowing down way before Button nearly crashes into his back. Button was caught taking a nap. Bit indecent to complain about Vettel afterwards.
I will be furious if Vettel gets a dubious penalty again.

Button really became a miserable and mean spirited driver since he won his WDC and joined McLaren. Again he is moaning about a nonstory and want another gifted win, while he did the same so many times in his carreer. In fact he did the same to Alonso at the 2nd SC period, but Alonso did better to avoid his breaktesting.

Big Red Bull deputation has gone down to the stewards, who are investigating the Vettel-Button re-start incident. Something serious brewing?

There are some clear rules when driving behind the SC, and sure the stewards gathered all the data from the telemetry, so just relax with all the paranoid and conspiracy theorys and wait for the official outcome.

I think it would be a little too much to penalise Vettel. But anyway this guy really needs to study the F1 regulations.
