I've been a McLaren supporter since the 80s. I've seen Marlboro sponsorship come and go, I've seen West come and go, I'm now going to see Vodafone come and go. Am I worried? No...McLaren's a top team and an ideal sponsorship partner - they'll have no difficulty attracting a new deal.

I hope you are right. I was a Mclaren fan from 1988 till last season so I don't wish them bad. I personally oppose MW, I don't think he is the best Mclaren could have to do his job. However this does put Mclaren on the back foot again, they lost their star driver, star designer / engineer - take your pick and now their main sponsor. They now have to hunt for a replacement for Vodafone. When you are in that situation, getting the best deals aren't that easy.

These are consecutive series of bad news in close proximity. I don't see how else to cut it. Perhaps the time has come to take a hard look at themselves and maybe there is something not quite right at home.

I don't think it matters really, but it does seem outside England, he doesn't seem have that many fans... Rightly or wrongly, business is about perception. That is why they spend tons on creating desired image.

I think that while US spectators are more familiar with the Telmex logo, Slim's Claro and Telcel companies are far more valuable. So if he did decide to become a title sponsor with McLaren, I imagine that Claro would be the primary sponsor, with Telcel and Telmex having a smaller presence.

I have been a McLaren fan for 3 decades.
You cannot deny the outlook is relatively negative - with key entities looking for the exit route.
And yes it annoys me what the team has become under Whitmarsh, they are very difficult to support nowdays, if not impossible.

Know exactly how you feel, Bro.

Dont get me wrong though... I still support Macca so long as Ron remains on the scene in any meaningful capacity.

Could be Lucozade as well. They already sponsored them on their rear wings for a few races.

A Lucozade Blue+Chrome livery might look interesting.

It had nothing to do with Hamilton. If they will have a deal like Vodafone, I have no idea. I would prefer a smaller deal with the main sponsor and maybe some smaller sponsors. A big sponsor like Vodafone makes you vulnerable imho.
As it was stated earlier, McLaren has lost really big names in the early 90s (under Ron Dennis!) and they 'recovered'. It's not a sinking ship, it's a bit of a change.

Cause he does things like recruit Sam Michaels.

Also it's not THAT different under MW. He's not Ron Dennis for sure, but he's longer at McLaren than me following them. Moreover MW was chosen by Ron and he seems not so unhappy with it.

So it seems their departure is not related to Lewis's leaving at all.

I doubt it, they moved to McLaren when Ferrari wouldn't drop Marlboro to get title sponsor (or so I read somewhere), but they have sponsored Dublin for the same amount of time as McLaren I believe.

As I said, Vodafone have been losing money left right and centre because their coverage sucks. They will be pulling all sponsoring of major proportions and pursuing alternative marketing strategies that won't cost them as much but will still net high returns. It has nothing to do with Lewis leaving the team and it has nothing with performance etc, its all to do with Vodafone and their current economics.

Wtf? Vodafone were on the sidepod of a Ferrari for three straight championships. I like to think they got something out of it.

What I've heard mentioned online;

Emirates - interest has been openly declared, I've posted about this in the Mac thread
TelMex - obvious tie in with Checo
Coca Cola - hot rumour a while back until Burn went to Lotus, then it died down
GSK- due to the strategic tie in thats already in place. This is a very involved partnership already.

If you forced me to pick one, I'd say GSK.

My reference to LH is his presence at Mclaren would have made it easier to attract new sponsors not necessarily prevent Vodafone from leaving.

I imagine, if there's a new main/title sponsor, the company demands significant changes in livery - even more so if it's in the same business as the previous sponsor was. I can't image a chrome/red/black McLaren where Telmex' stickers just replaced Vodafone's. After all, the title sponsor wants to get recognised... surely not just as "the company which replaced and looks like Vodafone".

I think that incorrect theory was debunked many posts ago! Simply a review of all marketing activities by Vodafone- sports sponsorship is no longer part of their plans.

mac were pushing hard for the Vodafone deal to start in 06 but it never came off. The 06 livery with Chrome etc was designed for Vodafone, then 'interim' sponsors were drafted in to fill the void (Diageo and Emirates). I expect the 2014 livery to be something entirely new.

My point was, McLaren is perfect platform for marketing, Vodafone job is done, probably someone else is villing to pay more for wing space.

If you ask me, it looks like McL's "colors" are just whatever the colors of the sponsor are. When they were sponsored by Marlboro, their colors were necessarily red and white. When sponsored by West they were grey/black/white, and when mainly vodafone mercedes they were silver with red bits.

Wests' primary colours are red-and-white though, see Zakspeed in the 80s as a car running their most typical colours. Allthough the grey/black/white was no doubt dropped because it had become associated with West after years of sponsorship (and with the colours being copied to a West-sponsored MotoGP team, too).

I agree that the Marlboro colours are nothing typical for McLaren though, lots of Marlboro sponsored cars looked exactly like it (BRM, Alfa Romeo in F1 even).

Can you maybe elaborate a little? That does't mean much to me by itself. I'm not aware of Sam Michaels being some kind of terrible guy and that would be one employment decision among countless across several years of being tp.

Not sure about worldwide, but in the UK they surely got a lot more out of the Jenson-Lewis pairing than they did with Ferrari. I'd forgotten they were with the latter, whereas I rember things like the "drive to Silverstone in Jenson's VW van" video.
