Now that Mercedes poached the best Mclaren driver will we see the Engine relationship sour?

Will we see Mclaren with a Ferrari engine in 2014? Renault? other?

Haha, McLaren with a Ferrari engine would be the equivalent of a Hamilton-Alonso pairing.

McLaren have a deal with Mercedes Benz. My only doubt is about the whole pack. I dont know if McLaren will develop his own ERS system or if Mercedes will provide the system.

Wasn't there talk about McLaren building their own engines a few years ago. I think Mercedes partnership with McLaren would end in 2013

From what i have read the free Mercedes engines to Mclaren end this year. From 2013 on Mclaren will have to pay.

With the money McLaren will retain from not paying Hamilton. They could easily buy Riccardo or Cosworth.

Now there's a thought?

I think that's actually quite possible. Button has a good relationship with Honda, I can see why it would appeal to the firm. There's also their shared history.

It's been expected for some time that McLaren are working towards building their own engines, whether or not they'll do it anytime soon is up for debate. I would of thought once the Mercedes deal is up it would be the ideal time to make the plunge.

McLaren need to look beyond Mercedes long term, ideally a works engine deal with a manufacturer willing and able to constantly develop the engine to be class leading, such as Honda or VW. But whether any manufacturers have any interest in such an arrangement is certainly in question.

Having to rely on a competitor puts them at a disadvantage, and if the rules changed so that engines didn't have to be homologated, 'works' engines could be at a real advantage over older spec customer units.

I Have to believe that 2014 onwards a certain amount of engine development must be allowed to ensure if an engine is found to have a fault it could be fixed in season.

I read from some pundit (can't remember who now) that there will be such fast paced development in the new engines that it will be impossible for customers to have the same spec engine.

F1 will become an engine formula again.

As far as I know, Mercedes havn't said they'll be supplying anyone in 2014 (besides themselves) we'll have to wait and see.

With Mclaren's Golden Goose Lewis at Mercedes I can see Mclaren distancing themselves from Mercedes by getting nines elsewhere even if it might be risky.

Button pissed off Honda completely in 2004 when he said to one of the big-wigs, camera rolling, "it isn't hard to build an engine that lasts for three laps", and then turned around and walked away. If stereotyping works, a Japanese wont forget that.

They may not have named any teams but they have said that they expect only 3 suppliers, all of who will likely supply more teams than they currently do.

Cosworth will produce an engine, if they can get team(s) interested

As McLaren are now sportscar and race car manufacturer, I can't see Ferrari ever supplying them with F1 engines. Mercedes might decide that McLaren is a road car competitor and pull out of supplying them with engines.

I'm certain we can expect a few more surprises before the new engines fire up for the first race in 2014.

I think most teams will stay with their current suppliers, with HRT going to Ferrari and Marussia going to Merc.

From what we've heard today, it sounds like the engine itself won't have many upgrades or performance benefits. They are very restricted on what they can do. All the benefits of a manufacturer will be with the recovery systems.

If McLaren decide to make their own system, they won't really experience the pains of being a customer team other than in the bank account.

I certainly don't expect them to use Ferrari engines and I'm certain they will still be using Mercs. Merc have stated many times that they get just as much glory from the success of their engines in a customers car.

Does McLaren have to change its engines? If it does, why does it have to change and when? Does its contract with Mercedes run out and how do we know this? Questions, questions, questions!

I now imagine a room full of Honda managers and directors in 2008 shouting and laughing with glee about how they will pull out of F1 and leave Button shamed and jobless. "Our city car this year make Button cry, we have brought him shame and now we pull out Ha Ha Ha!"

Yes their current contract runs out at the end of 2013 and we know this because it was all announced when the current deal was penned.

No they don't have to change supplier, but they do need to sign a new contract and ultimately it's Merc that will decide whether they want to continue supplying them.

For once in F1 there is a question with a simple answer :)
I don't see why Mercedes would not agree to a new deal. Don't the manufacturers have to supply a certain number of teams?

Speaking of engines. Apparently Bernie said that he thinks Jean Todt will ditch the 2014 spec engines. Montezemelo told Bernie they sound horrible. Has Hamilton made a mistake if the 2014 regs was the reason he left?

I dont see the partnership with McLaren ending anytime soon. It works for both parties, McLaren will always be near the top winning with the Merc engine, that is good for Mercedes. Only other option would be the Renault. I don't see Honda coming back.

No. I believe the contract runs till 2015.

So McLaren doesn't need to change its engines for several years and Bernie says there aren't any new engines coming in anyway. Does that make this thread redundant

Yes. It believes that the manufacturers had invested at least 100 millions into I+D for the new engine formula.

Is there anywhere we can see the specificaton for the new engines? The FIA website maybe? There have been many many changes to the new engines already so I would not be sure at all about them

if the new engine rules are brought in it might even mean goodbye to the privateers. If they are going to be at such a disadvantage as the media are making out. I think F1 should leave things as they are now. You all seem to be enjoying the racing so why change.

Well, this is a big blow for Hamilton if it happens. How unlucky can you get that you sign and rumours like this start leaking.

Really unlucky guy.
