Older spec, not necessarily slower. The speeds in the "main game" haven't improved that much over the past few years.
Having watched Murph's "lap of the gods" (multiple times this week!!) I sort of wonder just how competitive that car would be today around Bathurst against the current crop? Would be an interesting exercise methinks ;)
I remember Larry Perkins stuck with the VL Commodore for Bathurst when the other Ford/Holden teams had moved to VNs and ELs, as he simply felt the shape was "slippery". Went reasonably we'll from memory..... Perkins also stuck with the Group A commodore minus all the Walkinshaw bolt on plastic, happily giving up a little time over skyline to avoid the aerodynamic "wall" that the Walkies would hit coming down conrod.
I miss that feisty, bespectacled bugger throwing cars round the mountain with wonderfully controlled aggressiveness

Larry did race the VL Wankinshaw, though both him and Gricey reckoned it was a backward step.I loved larry cos he did things his own way. I remember one year he was the only guy that stayed with 5 lug nuts and he won the race cos the leader stuffed his one lug nut.
Larry stuck with the mechanically superior 5 stud until forced by rule changes to go to centrelock. He did not like it!! And the 5 stud pitstops were as fast as the centrelock ones anyway.
When Larry drove Johnsons Gp A Mustang he was the one who had the wheel fall off! A lap into his stint. And he had been at Johnsons reorganising the team before the event.
As for Chas Mostert I think it is very good effort in a older less funded car to be3/10 off of Whincups time. Todays qualifying and then the shootout MAY see an improvement.
Though the money spent on those cars to be no faster [and generally slower] than Murphys 6 y/o time is not a good look for the class. And the current cars should be a lot faster and are not, nearly everywhere.

They are a different spec car too.
The regulations got tighter for the engine (specified minimum weights for items like crankshafts, conrods, etc). Also since then they have had a change of drive ratio - which helps speed down Conrod (cars were hitting the limiter well before the Chase), but not necessarily lap times.

All the tributes to past legendary liveries for the 50-year anniversary are a nice touch, too.

Yeeeeeaahhhh!!! BATHURST!!! Rostered myself off work, got the TV set up in my garage, got a bunch of friends/family coming over and the 2 door coke fridge in said garage fully stocked with alcohol with plenty of meat for the BBQ. All set!

I do miss Bathurst Sunday dearly, I just went outside now and it's already getting cold, race starts for me at 9pm tomorrow night.

Don't forget tyres and fuel. As it's a control tyre I would be very surprised if the tyres haven't been cost engineered down a bit over time, and they changed to E85 as well...

If they did, they would free up diff ratio, rpm, aero, and tyre compounds.

They have never intended on making the cars faster.
If they did, they would free up diff ratio, rpm, aero, and tyre compounds.
If the cars got too much faster at Bathurst they'd have to completely destroy the track to make it 'safe'. Once someone suggested a chicane before the chase if they brought GT cars that were a few seconds faster than the current V8s for safety. That would totally butcher all that is good about it.

Hmmm too busy thinking about Mt Panorama and trying when the shoot out is that I kind of forgot Suzuka qualm is in half an hour
Yep, I just had to return from the track to watch F1 qualifying, especially because the bulls look so quick. Going to watch the top 10 shootout on TV (doesn't have the same feel as Hardies Heroes), It is starting to get real muggy outside, might be in for a storm.
In practice Will Davidson has looked quickest (by my untrained eye). Ford Pole?????
Oh yeah, the talent in the paddock was outststanding today.

The new formula COTF's *should* be marginally quicker one would think: slightly bigger wheels, gearbag moved aft for better weight distribution (IRS transaxle) and fuel tank moved forward of the rear axle line, plus a 100kg weight drop (?) and an engine formula that remains the same 5L/10.5:1 comp/7500rpm limit.
There should be definite gains to be made simply in corner speed, braking points and acceleration with less mass to shift....
Either way I'm looking forward to the new regs as I feel it's got pretty stale over the years. Just my opinion of course.

Yup, that's something I'd get homesick over if I were living abroad, too.

That was a pretty great lap from Whincup, with the conditions not being the best
+1
Absolutely amazing to watch, total commitment with the spots of rain. He really deserved pole.

That's not to take away from whincups lap (heck, as a 888 fan I'm cheering for him to win), but I do wonder if the conditions were actually worse like the commentators suggested.

No kidding. It was so embarrassing when that crap went out to the US with speed last year. I was just thinking 'we're not this backward, I promise.'
Lee Whatever was pretty horrifying.
Edit: I realise that speed was being broadcast to NASCAR fans straight out of the bible belt.

Should be but wouldn't be surprised if there is a delay to it - V8's have never had a clue when it comes to streaming races...

How many times do we see this at bathurst ffs, Dunlop really do suck, they cannot get the bathurst tyre right.
At least it gives some interest when the weather doesn't turn up. Get them running pirellis next year.

Nothing wrong with the tyres, just the clowns using them. Again and again they use too much camber, low starting pressures and then bitch about the tyres. HRT have always been the experts at stuffing up but it seems 888 are too.How many times do we see this at bathurst ffs, Dunlop really do suck, they cannot get the bathurst tyre right.
Fitzy has again said we give parameters and what he did not say is that they dont listen.
And he has done this with both Bridgestone and now Dunlop.
Supercar teams really do some stupid things at times. A few years ago it was the bastard file brake rotors [50 plus grooves] which have now become control. Maybe the cambers and tyre pressures should be!!

Nah haven't missed much, just tyres starting to fall apart already but you know that anyway...

And I was even sillier and went by your calculation earlier in the thread.FRuck **** **** who changed the ****ing clocks. ****. Did i miss anything? **** IT.
And surely they can't have been so fvcking stupid as to have the prayer thing again. They're not NASCAR, and no one in the US would give a sh!t if they had a prayer or not.

You'd think that for a 1000k race setting up the car to be nice to its rubber would be the smart thing hey?

Yeah but doesn't look like it's a consistent thing - Lowndes/Luff seems to be running fine now with no issues when they were the first to have trouble. So perhaps they thought they set it up ok but it somehow maniested itself for some reason?
That camera though that shows the left rear tyre/suspension is awesome - shows just how much distortion the tyre (which happens to be the one that is failing on all cars so far) cops around here...
EDIT: Whincup has now come in with the front left tyre having started to delaminate, so think that's the first front one to go today? And also Davidson's FPR Falcon - too many teams and to consistent an issue to point to a few teams going too aggressive on setup IMO...

Quality is a bit iffy but kudos to v8sc on the stream. I don't get why sports lock down their coverage, short term gain that strangles long term growth imho. I'd even pay a few bucks for more resolution, looks a bit blocky on a 50 inch tv but not much worse than speed SD and with aussie commentators so i'll take it.
When I was living in London I certanly would've paid to access a decent quality stream, but all V8's were doing then was allowing Telstra Bigpond customers within Australia to access online coverage, which was nuts considering they could watch it on their telly anyway...
