Has Calado got any sponsorship left to continue next year?

I don't know but being top rookie this year ought to give him some leverage with (potential) sponsors

Not with Racing Steps Foundation, who were funding him. So he would need to get it from somewhere. I really hope he does, easily the most impressive driver in GP2 this year. By a country mile.

That thought had crossed my mind too as gd2 feels

Carroll
Calado
Paffett
Davidson

all deserve a place in F1

Based solely on what I've seen over the last few years and I was talking about talent that's been overlooked.
There just happens to be more Brits that have been overlooked, the Young Drivers schemes until this season with Calado have been Brit free for years.
Filippi is worthy of an F1 drive given his speed in his rare appearances this year.

Don't get me started on the pay drivers and that includes Chilton, a Brit

Yes there have always been pay drivers in F1 but that doesn't mean it s right. F1 is supposed to be the best drivers, the best cars and the best teams but we only have some of the best drivers. I just want to see all of the best and drivers getting rewarded for their talent not the funds they bring.

For the record, my favourite driver of all time is Elio De Angelis, an Italian followed by Johnny Herbert. The best driver of all time is Senna, Brazilian. Overrated driver of all time, I'll let you guess that one!

Prost shouldn't be getting in an F1 car, he has done nothing in single seaters.

Gary Paffett deserves a place in F1

Ant deserves another crack, he's still used by Mercedes. Rather insulting to say he can make a good living in sportscars. He did all the hard work for Honda for years, if it wasn't for that groundhog in Canada he'd still be in F1.

Talent is what the talent spotters should be looking for ,regardless of age. Dr Helmut Marko would have lost his job years ago if he'd been a football scout. He's been employing League One drivers when the next Messi or Ronaldo has been staring him in the face!
Maybe finally MArko is realising that he has to look outside his chosen few?

Carroll and Filippi can step in a car and be instantly quick. What does it say of the GP2 field when Luca can get pole having been out of the series all year and Carroll did the same last season in FR3.5 & AutoGp. They aren't too old, better to have a fast, wise and skilful driver rather than a fast and unproven one taking out the field like Grosjean and a number of the GP2 field.

They were both well ahead of Perez, Kobayashi, Karthikeyan, Chandhook, Pic, Buemi, Alguersuari and D'Ambrosio when they got drives.

Have a word with the Autosport scribes they constantly question why Carroll is not in F1 and read James Allen's excellent article on the problems F1 faces with the way new drivers are being chosen.

I generally don't like to nitpick on others posts, but when you present your opinion as facts.

Prost get's one single day. Heck, even Norwegian Tommy Rustad got a testday back in 94 with Minardi (which only lasted three laps when he spun). One day, it can be a promise they have to keep. There might be some french sponsors, Renault etc. that wants it. One day. No big deal.

Years ago, he did, now. I'm not sure. He's not convinced me in testing.

Ant would've been in F1, just like Sato you mean?

Reg. Carroll and Filippi. Carroll had a good first season in GP2, but after that, he didn't progress as many would expect, and his one weekend in FR 3.5 was good. But there are loads of drivers having one good weekend, and nothing more.
Filippi in GP2 is a case of being in a team where everything clicks for him, combined with shitloads of experience. I would like to see him in F1 myself, just to see what he has got.

People are overreacting. The top 4 drivers (standing wise) of GP2 and FR3.5 are getting a chance. There are others drivers that I would like to see, but you can't expect that your list will be exactly the same as the teams list.

Fair enough and no sweat I was just ribbin' you on all the British drivers you listed. ;)

It's a noble thing to want to see only the best race in F1 but first and foremost F1 is a business for many teams so talent is not the only consideration, money, sponsors, age, nationality etc etc count too.
Hence my link to the Saward article.

Sure that means we miss out on a talented driver in F1 sometimes but really if we look at the current grid it's not that bad now is it?
I don't know if the presence of Carroll, Filippi or Ant would make much of an impact really.

I think we can't complain much about the drivers in the Abu Dhabi test, seems there's some proper talent there and it's not like F1 needs a dozen youngsters a year.

 on Elio De Angelis and Johnny Herbert though

That must've been a job well done from most of them, but especially Magnussen.

Hmm, I'm impressed by Sauber this year, keeping sharp with developments.

Just a shallow comparison between the "young" drivers times and the official drivers. I wouldn't took too serious, but still quite interesting to observe.

------------His time--Qualy car1--Qualy car2--Diff. car1--Diff. To car2--Avg diff.
Magnussen 42.651-----40.630-----41.290-------2.021-------1.361---------1.691
Paffett-----43.407-----40.630-----41.290-------2.777-------2.117---------2.447
da Costa--42.717-----40.978-----41.073-------1.739-------1.644---------1.692
Prost-------44.194-----41.260-----41.778-------2.934-------2.416---------2.675
Frijns ------43.775-----42.084-----42.606-------1.691-------1.169---------1.430
Razia ------44.691-----42.765-----44.058-------1.926-------0.633---------1.280
Giedo------45.936-----44.956-----45.089-------0.980-------0.847---------0.913

*Qualy car1 and car2 are the best time the official drivers did in qualifying.

They do a great job for young brits but only for one season of GP2, James needs to find backing to stick around next season, hopefully enough for a top team. Judging by his twitter account he is sorted for next season but no idea which series let alone team.

Pretty much impossible to draw any conclusions yet, Robin sounded like he struggled physically but thats got to be expected, only a year ago he was still doing FR2.0! Such big steps in such a small period of time. Kevin Mag appeared to do a solid job, i think the WSR title will be between him and Da Costa next year, can't wait to see it happen.

Any idea on what is what the teams are testing in this test? ie. not the drivers, but what components; and could this be a blow to Ferrari's hopes for the final two races, given that both RedBull Racing and McLaren are running their cars for the next three days?

I don't know about RBR and Macca, but Lotus works on optimising Coanda with testing new exhaust layouts and also optimising their DRD.

António did his fastest time when testing some parts for the team. When he was setting up for a proper qualifying time the car had KERS fail so he couldn't do a proper fast time...he said the time he did is bellow the car capabilities...

During this two days he drove Mark Webber's car so...maybe the KERS fail should be expected...hehe....

Yes today with the old exhaust configuration.
I think they will test it tomorrow with the new exhaust.

I remember they asked my wife to cover her shoulders and knees in a mall in Dubai, but in public places it was OK. I guess Dubai and Abu Dhabi are OK, wouldn't risk it in the rest of the Emirates.

It looks like the center pylon in the RBR is emanating from the beam wing. Earlier they were stalling either the beam wing or diffuser or both. Now it looks like some of the flow used to stall the beam wing is being redirected upwards again to stall the main rear wing.

Impressive going by Magnussen, Frijns and Valsecchi. Especially when you get comments backing up the impression from their laptimes.

A bit of a flashback - the test appeared to be very successful for Mclaren, as their new front wing was raced in Austin and they even won.

Here's an article that summarizes all testing efforts at Yas Marina, featuring interactive charts.
