John Brown's AFM-BRM 8 1959

He ran as number 12 in the 1959 Gold cup and retired on lap 1. He qualified slowest by 30 (thirty) seconds (!) and was no less than 51 seconds lower than Moss who was on Pole in Rob Walker's Cooper.
The question's are....
1/ What on earth was an "AFM BRM 8"?
2/Was it the same John 'HWM' Brown?
3/How on earth did they allow him to start when he would have been lapped the third time around, had he lasted?
