I was looking at wikipedia today and I noticed that so far (up to the Indian Grand Prix) there have been 13 drivers on the podium this season. Is this a record?

Edit: Looks like 2008 had 14!

I'm sure Wikipedia has the answer ;)

But I'd second-guess that you were right on this one.

There were 12 in 2009 so...

This year then? Let me see:

Vettel, Alonso, Räikkönen, Webber, Hamilton, Button, Grosjean, Massa, Rosberg, Schumacher, Pérez, Kobayashi, Maldonado... wow that's quite a few right there!

I also need to check 1982... oops 17 drivers (!)

How many made the podium in 2011? 7?

13 in 2009 ;)
(OK, it's easy to overlook Heidfeld scoring half points for his 2nd place in Malaysia)

No, 13 podiums has happened many times before. And:

2008: 14
1997: 15
1994: 14
1982: 18
1977: 14
1974: 14
1970: 15
1968: 17
1960: 16
1958: 15
1957: 14
1956: 14
1955: 16
1954: 14

Wait til Bernie launches his idea for 5-step podiums next year. Take that record books!

The worst part of it? Two podium interviewers, asking questions simultaneously through a shared mic.

Here's a different format for the number of podium finishes over all seasons:

18 – 1982
17 – 1968
16 – 1960, 1955
15 – 1997, 1970, 1958, 1954
14 – 2008, 1994, 1977, 1974, 1957, 1956
13 – 2012*, 2009, 2005, 1995, 1989, 1985, 1984, 1979, 1978, 1975, 1971
12 – 2006, 1990, 1983, 1976, 1973, 1969, 1959, 1953, 1952, 1951, 1950
11 –1999, 1993, 1987, 1981, 1980, 1972, 1964
10 –2003, 2001, 1998, 1996, 1988, 1967, 1966, 1965, 1962, 1961
9 –2004, 1991, 1986
8 – 2010, 2007, 1963
7 – 2011, 2002, 2000, 1992

The mean is 11.38 and the median is 12, so 2012 is above average but far from special.

It would be interesting to divide these numbers by number of races in each season.

Besides, we have 20 races/season now. There were about 3/4 of that in the 80s and 90s.

16 in 1982 so it means the average is WAY higher than now.

Excluding the first two races of 2011, only 5 drivers finished on the podium.

5 drivers, in 17 races.

Now THAT must have been some kind of record.

In fact that streak continued through Australia this year, and was only broken when Perez finished 2nd in Malaysia.
