Last year, the teams gave their predictions for India, and almost all of them were waaaaaaaaaaay off the markWeird that Vettel is in the 1:38s already, I thought that was the predicted quali range?

Maybe, maybe not.New tyres or not being over 2 seconds quicker than anyone else bar Hamilton is quite something.
We'll see in the next couple days.

Where would newer tires normally give the bigger advantage? It probably is the slower section isn't it?

This is quite speculative but Vettel was not the best in sector 1 (fast and flowing) but was a whopping 0.9s faster in sector 3 (slower and twisty)

everybody should calm down, there's absolutely no way vettel is that much faster than the rest of the field, he hasn't even had that advantage in his RB6 and RB7 days.
take a look at the temperature graph of the track, how it rose towards the end, add in a lighter fuel load and new tires + a very good lap, and you get that advantage.
it will definitely change come fp2, you won't see it again.

I don't know which is more overrated, the thrill of the hill or Vettel's time.

It's unusual to have that big a gap in FP1 is all...
The track will rubber in all weekend and likely the improvement in pace when qualy comes will be several full seconds.. but right now the other teams can already look at Vettel's lap, do a quick calculation with the fuel load they ran and see where they stack.. for instance HRT maybe needed a fuel load a long waaaay into the negatives to have done that lap

Not as much as people getting too excited about the first turn. Hell there are better corners just in the first sector.

Because RB car is relatively slow in top speed, but good in turns, and having a driver like Sebastian who complements the car well makes the difference in charts. This is quite speculative but Vettel was not the best in sector 1 (fast and flowing) but was a whopping 0.9s faster in sector 3 (slower and twisty)

The track is very cool, it was noted in the broadcast but I agree negotiating lapped traffic through sector 1 could get interesting.. there's just no spot to get out of the way at all.
They somehow manage it at Suzuka.

Vettel put on a new set of tyres, the rest didn't - or am I wrong?
Well he didn't have that flo-vis on the tyre earlier in the session.

Why is it you seem to know better? Why can't people feel excited about the first corner? Been there done that?

he has done a 138 already. More chance of it being a 133 at least.

FIVE seconds quicker? I strongly doubt that, even if it's very green today.

McLaren's Paddy Lowe says Jenson Button was "rallying" in P1. "Shocking" lack of grip. Also, Vettel time set on new tyres.

Turns out Vettel's mega two laps at end of P1 were set on an effectively new set of tyres (he did his installation lap on them)
I guess that's just symptomatic of Red Bull not really needing two sets of tyres for the number of laps they did. They were able to keep one set until the very death. Wonder if Webber did too...

Of which there isn't enough. Likewise low shots. Most of the shots wish to portray the entire facility/entire straights/entire complex of corners. Far too many high shots making the cars look slow as usual.
