Andretti.
For mostly everybody else on the list, 'Formula 1 World Champion' is probably at the top of their resume. for Andretti, it's probably 6th.

If you consider not just F1, but their whole careers in terms of longevity and success, by a large margin it would have to be Mario. It just has to be.

Jochen Rindt.

He was the fastest of all when in 1967 most F1 drivers (Clark, Hill, Stewart, Hulme, Brabham, Surtees you name 'em) mixed it with the upcoming talents in the new F2 formula in almost equal material. When he finally got a really good F1 car he was peerless.

It's a waste of time including current one time champions, or hypothetical multiple time champions if you will.

Is hamilton as good as the poll results suggest or have we gone and confused best with favorite again?

All these votes, yet silence...

Hamilton. With a bit more luck he would now already be a 3x WDC. 2007, 2008, 2012. Heck, even 2010 would've been possible.

Lewis won his only championship on a season when Felipe Massa was his greatest rival after Kimi Räikkönen underperforming (and suffer from team policy), Heikki Kovalainen was his team mate and the other teams weren't even close to him. 2008 was a year no one really deserved it, too many mistakes from everyone - and Hamilton's championship drive at Brazil was a joke. I wouldn't say him and I'm afraid that'll also be his only championship.

This is not a poll comparing the individual years these champions won their respective titles. The most recent four in that list, Villeneuve/Hamilton/Button/Raikkonen (have) had better years than their championship years in my opinion.

I voted Andretti too. He was probably even past his absolute peak when he won his WDC - think what he could have achieved if he joined the Lotus F1 team full time in the late 60s.

In terms of F1 only then I would say Lewis or Kimi. In the wider terms of motorsport then it has to be Andretti.

Well yeah, that's true - actually Kimi & Lewis both have had 2-3 better years than their championship years.

Yeah you´re right, Rindt had probably much more luck than Hamilton in his career.

Mansell, Hami, and Kimi. Mansell could be mega fast, beating Prost in qualifiyng in 1990 for exemple, and beating Piquet in 1986. Hamilton will win more than one, for sure, co's he's got hunger and the speed. Kimi is an unique talent and also very fast specily in races.

Damon and jenson have similar precise styles, but not the ultimate speed. Andretti of course was very good but not that fast and Rosberg clearly lucked into is championship a bit like Villeneuve. They were good, no doubt, but not at the top level.

Can't judge the others, but I have the feeling Rindt was pretty awesome.

I would rather vote for Damon Hill as best 1x WDC than for Mansell - and yes i´m serious.
Mansell is for me the most overhyped british driver of all time.
I still liked to see him racing though. He was spectcular to watch (but so was JP Montoya e.g. ....).

Same with Kimi! With a bit more luck he would have won in 2003, 2005 and 2007. Both were actually "lucky" (but still deserved it) when they won their WDC. ... but you know that Macca/Mercedes knows how to **** up at title!

Then again I think that this thread is misleading as Ham just won the last race (you´re only as good as your last race) and peeps tend to vote for the guys they saw driving (the current drivers)

Andretti...Villeneuve...Mansell...Raikkonen...Hamilton

Andretti and JV not only won F1 titles but cleaned up IndyCar/Indy 500 wins when CART was an F1 rival...and better in so many ways.
Also...and this is VERY significant...they both went from US to Europe, not the other way.

All a poll like this shows is most here dont care for history, only for favourites and what happened yesterday.

Damon is so underrated, he was in the same league as Prost, great development skills, good speed and could go the extra mile when necessary.
Should have one title more and Schumacher one less :)

Rindt without any doubt. He was still young when he died. With more luck he could have been around until early eighties and be a multiple WDC by that time. His 1970 was highly impressive, won each time when was able to finish the race. But in his earlier career has shown some extraordinary speed as well. I believe there was an enormous potential in him and he could be considered today at the level of Fangio, Senna, Prost and Schumacher if his career was as long as it could have been. :(

This is so incredibly hard...
But I think I'm gonna have to go with Jochen Rindt, but very, very close.

I'd say (rating to eachother, not trying to give percentages over a lap):
Jochen Rindt 100
Lewis Hamilton 99.7
Kimi Räikkonen 98.5
Nigel Mansell 97.5
Damon Hill 96 ( )

I agree that Damon is underrated, though I wouldn't put him near Prost ;)

I voted for Mario but I can also see the case for Rindt. He was, in fact, younger than Mario and so could have had another decade at least in F1. However, I understand that he was considering retirement on winning the WDC because of the safety circumstances of the time.

I'm not sure how you can rate DH and trash JV. 1996 suggests that JV had more potential.

I'd love to meet John Surtees. I was reading Mick Walker's biography of him and it said that he hit a cow on the Isle of Man. I had to reread that line as I was convinced that I'd misread. How on earth anyone could survive that I have no idea.

But in that regard he might have been similar to Hamilton - meaning, that he didn´t improve all too much after his rookie year mainly because he started in F1 perfectly prepared.

I think with Surtees and Rindt, its more that most here wouldnt have seen them. I personally only vote on what I've actually seen, reputation however is different.

How else would Hamilton and Raikkonen have so many votes...and others so little.
