Looks like Mclaren, very rightly, have a more rigorous Fitness Regime and Level of physical stamina higher than that required by Sauber. I do hope Sergio Perez is up for the task, or Mclaren will have another Montoya who simply threw away races from podiums positions a lot having lost concentration, which is inherent to Physical Fitness. No wonder Perez is just throwing his car around and some crazy moves off late.

McLaren say new driver Sergio Perez is facing 'hard winter'
http://www.bbc.co.uk...rmula1/20403485

Sergio Perez, 22, has recently conducted a fitness test to which McLaren submit all their drivers and it proved he is a long way short of the physical condition of Hamilton and his team-mate Jenson Button.

McLaren say Sergio Perez has to up his game before he joins them in 2013 as Lewis Hamilton's replacement.

Martin Whitmarsh said after Sunday's US Grand Prix: "He has got a lot to learn and we've got a hard winter ahead with him. "I am not worried about him. We have the winter to prepare him," Whitmarsh said.
"He will spend a lot less time in Mexico than he realises at the moment. That means he will be in the simulator, will be with the race engineers, he will be with the strategy people, he will be with the general engineering team, he will turn up considerably fitter and stronger than he is today.

Perez's recent form with his Sauber team has led to widespread questions within Formula 1 as to whether McLaren have made a wise choice. There has been speculation that McLaren, who have to pay for their Mercedes engines for the first time next year, have signed Perez in an attempt to tap into some of his lucrative Mexican sponsorship. But Whitmarsh says this is untrue.

Pretty misleading and sensationalized thread title. The article says he isn't in as good a shape as Hamilton or Button. From Sauber I wouldn't expect he would. He didn't "fail" anything. He's just not performing at the level in which McLaren are accustomed and he's got a few months to train and work in the sim. Nothing to see here...

The article doesn't say he "failed" the test, but does say he was poor in it which is worrying. On the bright side that also probably means there's potential to be extracted there by optimizing his physical preparation.

This air of gloom regarding the move is far too premature, on the other hand it isn't the best atmosphere for him to settle in neither. Something doesn't feel right here, why is this information regarding the physical test even leaked?

:p The mandatory McLaren-first-season-clone-haircut aside it's going to be very interesting to see how Perez will handle that pressure of driving for a top team.

Nothing a bit of pre-season training can't fix.

Slightly OT but.... Uhm, no. There was nothing wrong with Montoya's physical fitness. Sure, he carried a few more pounds than desirable but compare him to Trulli on the Hockenheim podium of 2003 at the height of the European summer heatwave, or his battles with Kimi at Interlagos in '04 and '05 with the physical demands of the bumps and the rarer counter clockwise configuration- it wasn't Montoya's neck that was gone before the end of those races..

Just improving strong necks is not an absolute. Lack of concentration stems from Physical fitness, which, to become World Champion, needs to be throughout the season, not just a few races. Perez is way off the boil since in this latter stage of the Championship.

It sounds like Mclaren are trying to put too much pressure on Perez already. Maybe they are so pissed that Hamilton walked away that they aee taking out that frustration on Perez through expectations. The last thing they want is a driver with too much to handle on his plate who will quickly lose motivation.

Maybe Mclaren should up their game too, how many WCC's have they had since 1998? ONE!!!!

Lack of concentration stems from Physical fitness

There's a correlation between exercise and concentration, but its not some absolute law or anything. Lack of concentration can occur for many reasons and conversely, you dont need to be physically fit to be able to concentrate well.

Saying that Perez's more erratic moves are a result of his lack of fitness is wild finger pointing.

Actually I think it's the opposite, you need to be physically fit to be concentrated, but you can lose concentration because of other reasons.

I think Mclaren, the engineers, the team bosses are particularly worried about getting into a Kovalainen type situation. After all, not all young promising drivers can even come close to matching Kimi, Alonso & Hamilton's early years into F1.

To leak this fitness test result could only come from Mclaren's annoyance at Perez not being fit even though he's been an F1 driver for a couple of years already.

I just kind of think that McLaren overloads a driver with natural talent with the aim of making them x% better. Sometimes you can't and it ends up being hampering performance because of pressure, lack of enjoyment and tiredness. Fitness is okay to improve on but he knows how to drive, yes they'll improve him a bit the best training for speed and endurance is running at the front with the big boys. Nothing will hone the lap times like that.

No wonder Alonso said Schumi would have win in this years Sauber. Turns out, Perez isn't fit enough for the task.

Nope. If Perez is physically tired during races, it inevitably affects his ability to perform at a high level. It may not be the only factor responsible for his erratic moves, but it is certainly contributory...

Plenty of unfit people can concentrate on something just fine. Fitness is not a requirement, it just often helps.

Do we know that he's actually getting physically tired? Can we go back and check on when he performed these actions and do we have his breathing rate, heartrate and other data to come to this conclusion?

I'm not saying it cant be the explanation, I'm just saying we dont know nearly enough to say thats definitely what it is.
