Be thankfull that you have a track. Whatever its name.
You could be stuck with the once a year demo derby track at Homebush. A facility I believe is somewhat of a White Elephant in general.

Unfortunately the newly restored Elfin that won the first Australian Fj Championship won't be running as the engine blew up on the dyno

It will be a static display in the memorabilia marquee.

These are NOT the B&W pictures I planned to take; the Ilford film went to the lab today and will take 10 days.

These are from my Canon DSLR and I edited them (mucking around) to look the part - grainy B&W setting...

Graham Lord was telling me that they were having problems with the rear undertray on the D Type making the car feeling very light in the rear comming down the main straight, they were runing tests to try & fix the problem, this was on Friday.

Did they fix the problem over the weekend ?

GM...there seemed to very few air cooled machines there....do we put you down as a DNS?

I thought that the A/C mob may have an advantage in the oppressive heat....even so, was very surprised to hear that Cooper 500 fella thought the heat was great! (I would have thought there might be some power loss...)

Can anyone please advise on identity of this car, and its owner? It looks distinctly like a car I have a research interest in but if I am correct about its identity I had not realised it had progressed this far....

Thanks

It's Andrew Halliday's 1951 Cooper-Norton Mk V. There are a couple of photos of it on this page, including:

Owned by Andrew Halliday, raced mainly by Bill Shipway in its heyday, later Barry Lake among others, into historics by Ash Cowan in 1998, with present owner since 1996. This family also have a MkIV, the one Jack Myers had twin Triumphs in, the Brabham speedcar no. 28 and also the Waye 500, dedicated air cooled enthusiasts !

Thanks Tim and John. Not the particular Cooper I thought it may be. The lack of a 'Cooper grille' was what I focussed on, but did not realise there were two Coopers with the plain nose.

Fourteen litres, right there. Talk about 'ground-pounding'. Yet they were still drowned out by the adjacent drag-racing.

What a great weekend, though. I did notice lots of groups of people just talking and catching up, never minding the racing. Which seemed funny to me - I sometimes wonder if the cars are incidental.

One of the nicest stories of the weekend was the Saturday night dinner award of the Ron Reid Memorial Driver of the Meeting Trophy to Rex Robinson, who on this occasion ran Regularity in the David Reid Jaguar C Type Replica, a splendid beast. It is 46 years since Rex last raced a car (on the Tasman programme at Warwick Farm), and included in his past is the lovely Elfin Mallala he raced 46 years ago, the Buchanan MG he started with, a never built Albert Bridge sports car curtailed when Albert died in a road accident, and lots more. Rex' father was not only spanner for Hope Bartlett for over a decade mid 30s-late 40s, but was also Phillip Island riding mechanic for Hope Bartlett on the old dusty rectangle. Rex' father also applied for a job with Charles Kingsford Smith on his Tasman flight, and Rex proudly retains Kingsford Smith's signed reply to Rex' father. No less importantly, Rex has been the splendid chef for Team Reid for the last decade

I don't think it's the cars that are incidental, quite to contrary, but the so call racing probably is. The vast majority of those who attend the Revival are tech-heads who love nothing more than viewing and discussing the technical aspects of the cars and swapping lies about past racing exploits. The racing might be of interest to those taking part but by and large it's fairly processional stuff.

That highlights the difference I observed between our Revival and Goodwood. Here there are far too many old farts driving their own pride and joy and really just out for the drive (certainly not all) whereas at Goodwood there was a no holds bared approach with many professional drivers involved. How I would love to see the Mildren Waggot, Yellow Submarine, etc, being driven how Max and KB drove them but failing that, at least on display. How good it was to see Spencer and Smithy have a go in the Brabham Alfa and 49 a couple of Revivals ago.

I think part of the problem is EC or whatever it is now called; it's far too big for many of the cars. I didn't see historics at Oran Park but I would think the circuit layout was far more suitable.

The other aspect I found VERY VERY disappointing was the NON APPEARANCE of several Matich cars for Frank's tribute... Poor show chaps.

That said - 723 sleeps until the the 2014 Revival

I only saw 1 Historic meeting at Oran Park (actually took all the family along including my wife....... probably never occur again!). Wasn't bad at all. For me Amaroo was perfect for Historics though.
I've included a before and after of the B-Nettis Ferrari 126 - taken on the same 500mm Nikkor Reflex lens too. What a difference between photographic backgrounds between Adelaide GP circuit and E Creek.
Even Virginia in Adelaide was more photogenic than EC..... (for my liking anyway)

Nitro and superchargers tend to make them far noisier. Those big block Can Am cars are usuallu only hard on the throttle in a straight line and seldom turn the RPM that a Drag Racer does. Though they only do it for 1/4 of a mile ofcourse

Lindsay, while Eastern Creek is probably not the ideal venue, and then presuming they used the new shorter circuit it is far more photogenic than AIR ever was. I have been impressed with the look of the upgraded EC. A few circuits have had a general tidy up. PI is lovely now, it used to be a great track but average facilitys and maintenance. Mallala looks quite good these days, Clem does try. Wanneroos upgrade looks good. As do a few others.

Hi all,
I had my first visit to EC as a competitor (only my 4th meeting) and have to say I love the circuit and the event. The trip up from Melbourne was definitely worth the trip. The track has a great flow to it, as you would expect from a MotoGP bike track, though I will need a bigger injection of testosterone to get through turn 1 quicker than I did!!! The down side of being a competitor ( with a few niggling problems) is that you don't get a good chance to look at all the fantastic cars. On the plus side it was amazing how other competitors unknown to me were more than willing to come and help out with equipment and advice-special thanks to Dave Mawer and the crew of Damon Hancock. The only blemish was the over zealous efforts of the security guards who made loading up on Sunday night way more difficult than it needed to be. Suffice to say I will go back again next year. If anyone has photos of a silver Van Diemen RF82 (#14) in Formula Ford it would be appreciated.

Cheers
Steve

The trick is to casually mention before the race meeting that you will be attending the meeting, in F-Ford car No.14 and one of us will make sure we take a photo of you.

Posted Image

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Otherwise all we can show is you at the back of the pack before your big charge through the field.

What a great shot - for a few seconds it took me straight back to my schoolboy days in the darkroom - grainy Tri-X and late 60's cars - love it!

Does anyone know why there was such a long gap between the races in the afternoon. Some races had 25 minutes between them. i understand the recovery of stranded cars, but 6 races in the afternoon from 1pm!

The first holdup was when a car dropped oil all over the strart grid after a holdup to present the cars to the public that was a waste ,they were held in pit lane to recover because the drivers had dehyrated due to the long hold up and the very hot conditions ,and then this happened to the McLarenM4a.causing another holdup not good at all HSRCA.

That fire could have been a lot worse if it had not been for VSCC WA member Ed Farrer while the officials were discussing what to do
he grabbed a fire extinguisher which was a few feet away and put the fire out. The fire crew arrived shortly after.

I understand that Cameron Forsyth also deserves a pat on the back for his action in assisting the driver out of the burning car and then extinguishing his burning overalls. I was seated in my Elfin further down the line at the time and could not see the action but it seems to have been a pretty effective group response in the face of serious inaction by the ARDC fire marshalls.

I was second car behind from the McLaren that caught fire and next in line after the silver Brabham No 21 got very quickly out of the way which was great thinking on the driver's behalf. After my vision became clear with the car moving out of the way, of what was happening, I jumped out to access my extinguisher on the back of my car, but by the time I had got out Gary Simkin had already fired off a bottle into the fire which thank goodness killed the flames which were very intense as can be seen in the photo above.

Whilst Gary was racing to get the extinguisher Cameron Forsyth helped the driver out of the car and extinguished a flame on the back of his drivers suit and another person dived into the cockpit I suspect for some very good reason.

This is as I saw it, the 3 people mentioned above deserve the most heartfelt thanks and recognition for their deeds from all of us involved in racing these cars, in an event that lasted about 45 seconds.

If you look very closely at the photo above you can just make Gary Simkin out through the smoke and extingisher contents.

Ed

To be fair, there are a number of Fire-Trained officials at any meeting...red overalled people patrolling around on foot and in vehicles and various other Officials dressed in non-flame proof garb...

In addition, bottles are usually (strategicly) placed inside the pit wall....Not all the Officials are ARDC people, but usually CAMS licenced (in this case)
