I started this in another thread but I wasn't sure where was best for it, so i'm posting it here to see what y'all thunk:

Not sure if this has been mentioned already in this thread, but about Vettel's clapping gesture as he crossed the finishing line at Austin - I assumed at the time it was aimed towards his team for winning the constructors, but DC read it as him congratulating Hamilton? Is there a consensus as to what he meant by that?

I assumed it was to Lewis, but now you've got me second guessing.

I originally thought so too. Perhaps a sort of repentance for his rant over the radio once he had time to cool off?

I think it was to Lewis. He did it as he passed him, so...

It was also as he passed the pitwall. Honestly I think it would be an extraordinarily unusual gesture for him to have directed that at Hamilton. In the immediate aftermath of the race, you're not in a rush to congratulate the next guy, you're taking stock of your own events. It's one thing patting another guy on the back in front of the cameras afterwards and saying 'good job', quite another a voluntary gesture like that. I find it weird if he did mean it towards Hamilton. Still think it was aimed at the pitwall, which would also tally with his radio message.

Thoughts?

I think it was directed to Lewis. It was just when he got alongside him. If I remember correctly, he got alongside by going slightly faster, slowed to his same speed, gestured, and then went faster than Lewis again.

I Think it was for Lewis.

If it was for his team,he would come behind Hamilton and celebrate close to the pit wall.

He tried to win the race until the very end and showed class on the very final.

People are too hard on Vettel sometimes,he is just a young man like us,and a very competitive one.

Also I have a niggling feeling that Lewis spends quite some time on this forum. I remember someone posting a photo of that. Lewis, if you are reading this, all the best and thanks a tonne for for all the highs you gave us in that McLaren.

Definitely Lewis, he also came straight up and congratulated him as soon as he was out of the car.

If you watch Lewis crossing the line, you could see him gesturing to Vettel with his hand in order to answer and say thank you. Perhaps Lewis might have mistaken that he was congratulating him as well, but as I saw it, Vettel was indeed congratulating Hamilton.

I thought it was directed at Hamilton but difficult to say. He was certainly passing Hamilton at the time he did it and they'd certainly passed the chequered flag and I'd have thought that they were past the McLaren and Red Bull pitwall stations by that time. Might be wrong though

There have been several photoshops of it, but a few years ago he was actually seen on the live FOM feed looking at the Autosport forums. I think it might have been during a red flag period during a wet race somewhere.

Wow we need a thread to decide whose Vettel's clap was for?

On the pit channel team radio after the race Horner told Vettel they'd won the constructors championship, and Vettel said he hadn't known until then if they'd done enough, so I assume this was for Hamilton.

I created the thread (note [split] in the title) because Vettel was off topic in the Lewis thread. Please PM me if you have further concerns.

Lewis was seen on the news page, not the forum. Though I am sure he reads my posts. Hi Lewis

As for the clapping, it looked to me for Hamilton. I was shocked a little by it though. Never seen Vettel act the man before.

I don't have any problem or concerns with you splitting the thread but was merely expressing my surprise that Vettel's clap generated so much interest. Anyhow, I guess it's just one of those things. I won't comment on it any further so

Thanks for clarifying.

It was definitely directed towards Lewis, he did the same thing to Kimi in Abu Dhabi.

I thought he was congratulating Hamiton, probably as a gesture towards how closely they were fighting with each other throughout the race.

The immediate feeling I got was that it was Lewis. But then again, you got me thinking - RBR won the constructors, so it's a fair case assuming that he applauded his team.

Every little thing and gesture is nowadays dissected, while years ago drivers could throw an opponent off the course and no one noticed (except for some track marshals). We live in the media, twitter and forum age.

I guess anyone still answering the team hasn't read the responses here.

* Lewis returned the favor
* he did the same to Kimi in Abu Dhabi
* they had probably already passed the RB pit
* he would have done that close to the pit wall, not on the other side of the track

Clear as day ;-)

How true is that.

Reminds me of a Dilbert (I think) I saw once of a guy furiously tapping away on his keyboard while his wife waits patiently in bed and he says he wouldn't be long, he'd just seen something that was wrong on the internet.... :rotfl:

That would assume that populair vote is in anyway related to correctness.

I might be the Lone Ranger on this one, but I thought he was directing his clapping towards Narain as he passed the HRT driver on the straight. I know he was upset with him earlier in the race and this was his way of showing him that he wasn't happy with him (in a smart aleck way, of course).

Couldn't he congratulate both Lewis and the team?
Is this so important?
IIRC his head was turned towards the position where the McLaren was supposed to be.

Does anyone have a video still of this, perhaps with some MS paint arrows drawn on it, to indicate the direction of travel of the hands and where they hit each other? As proof.

Yes, please. A full-blown forensic analysis on the trajectory of the gesture and its intended as opposed to actual landing point as well as the relationship between said landing point and the direction of Vettel's eyes is essential for the proper continuation of this discussion.

also frequency of the claps because if it is under the Fs limit, it could be regarded as sarcastic clapping. (Fs equals about 1/1,2*sec? have to check later)

Did we forget a 50+ lap fairly fought battle between the two?

It's annoying to see this thread. If you don't know Vettel then the joke is on you and you should go sit in a corner and be ashamed of yourself.

I think he was just in awe of the battle they just had. They were like 35 seconds ahead of the rest of the field trading Fastest lap after Fastest lap. I can't remember the last time Vettel was pushed like that. When Vettel loses a race, its usually either down to lack of pace or some other mistake. He's usually able to eek out a massive gap over everyone else. I think he was just simply stunned that Lewis was not just able to live with his pace but also better him.

It was a nice gesture from Seb.
