How did Massa match Alonso in the last 2 deciding races?

I notice people getting hasseled at the mere mention that Ferrari might give Massa equal Focus.

I think Massa must have had the same problem with tyres that bothered other drivers (Button, Senna)

The same Senna who was outqualified by now-touring-car-driver Christian Klien by 1 second?

In Senna's case it is more likely that Senna is just slow IMO!

I am a bit surprised about the question asked in this thread. The amazing thing is not how Massa matched Alonso in the last two races, but how Alonso overshadowed Massa in the previous ones.

In case anyone has forgotten, Massa is a WDC contender and a top driver. A guy who could hold his candle against a Schumacher at his peak, and who beat Raikkonen two seasons in a row. I do highly rate both Schumacher and Raikkonen, so I was not surprised when he started 2010 proving to be level with all the top guns in F1.

That early season and the two last races show that, unlike some thought, Massa has not lost anything after his terribe 2009 accident. Yes, he has probably been underperforming for a while - and that was the weird thing, not that he has recovered himself and is again doing what he does: driving an F1 car at a very high level.

2006 was no where near peak Schumacher.

Peak Schumacher is 2000.

Massa would not touch the 2000 Schumacher, only Alonso might have.

Um, no, no he most certainly couldn't.

Schumacher has more WDCs than anyone in the history of F1. Massa has, um, well, hmmmmm.......

Successful at what also matters. Something has to be a bit broken in each of the drivers who are so desperate to win in this amusing little circus called Formula 1.

Not as much as what has to be broken at those who, lacking those achievements,do their best to put those drivers down.

I was hoping for Alonso until he started with all the "I'm racing Newey" baloney. He should have spent more time focusing on the races, and less time trying to put Vettel down. Maybe then he would have won his third WDC?

I do think Massa found back to his old self. Which is great. But I do think that Alonso will outscore Massa again on consistency. At the other hand, I'd also agree and disagree at the same time with Campos

Where I'd disagree with Campos is that we still saw the real Fernando. Fernando did the best he was able to do, but it was't good enough to become WDC. Will be interesting to see if Alonso will be able to pull through the entire 2013 season, without loosing steam. He's not getting any younger, and the usual course of every driver is that they usually become better at managing a season, while getting slightly slower. To me speedwise Alonso was not on the same level as in his 2 WDC winning seasons. With all his consistency, IMO if Fernando doesn't get a car that is the best for a good part of the season, winning championships will be over for him. The younger guys are too close talentwise.

About Vettel. Just read "AUTOSPORT's top 50 drivers of 2012", in which Button (ranked 5th) was quoted to say, that he want's to beat the little German in 2012.

In the end it seems to me that jealousy runs high. And it didn't do anything to improve my opinion on Button as well.

And that's Alonso's problem isn't it? He's watching his legacy as the greatest of his generation slip away, and he can't deal with it.
