I dont dislike any driver but I dont like PM's financing and his (apparent) lack of concern for the safety of others ... but I think with a bit more expererience he may well prove to be the quickest driver on the grid over a lap.

I also dont much care for MW's "hard but fair" approach to wheel to wheel racing... but he is the driver from whom I have the most respect as a person. He is the kind of guy you show your son and say ... see him, that's how you go about being a man.

what if it's a daughter ??? :p

"Positive things about drivers we dislike", hey?

Does that mean that team principles and management are game on? If so, I've got a homoerotic novel about Helmut Marko I'd be glad to publish. I'm willing to add an agreaable little sentence about Vettel in the preface.

I've been surprised at the tone of the bb in the past week - it's the end of one of the closest and most exciting seasons in memory and yet, there seems to be an inordinate amount of bitterness and bile. Unsurprising, I suppose, given the controversies and non-controversies surrounding the final race. But let's forget about that.

Excellent thread Bruce ?

Then it becomes two things:

1. This is the kind of man you want to marry/commit to

2. This is still a true example of "see, that's how you go about being a human being!"

I couldn't stand him mid-season, but Pastor Maldonado is damn quick. Since Grosjean's ban, he has also stopped running into everything in sight.

A positive thing I have to say of the only driver I really dislike:

Alonso - he seems to always be fit and take's his work seriously in his way.
No problems with overweight and hates loosing. That's professional and good for the team

I have one more positive thing about Alonso - He likes samuraj visdoms - me too

And there is also one more I have a bit difficult to like - Webber...

But Webber is really consistent and brings the car almost always home with good points.
He has several wins, podiums and poles. He delivers. And he is from an exiting country I would love to visit some day.

Dick Dastardly adopted a stray dog in a race years ago in Brazil — by the time he wasn't F1 laughing stock and was overhyped, so perhaps a decade ago or something like that?

Vettel - You don't win three in a row without being one of the very best in the sport. I always thought he lacked personality, but he seems to be a genuinely nice guy. I would be surprised if he didn't take his fourth straight in 2013.

Schumacher - Bruce, you and I fought the good fight against Schumacher for a long time on here. I think he's been humbled by the past couple of years, certainly for the better. He seems more relaxed, and seems well-liked in the paddock.

Hi Paste - yeah - how times have changed, eh? If I'd started this thread 10 years ago I'd have been stabbing a pen knife into my thigh as I manfully tried to find something good about MS...

But since he has rejoined the sport, I've begun to like him, he's shown that he has a sense of humour a sense of perspective and an ability to laugh at himself that seemed absent before. Or maybe I just wasn't able to perceive it...

The mantle of "senior statesman" certainly sits well on his shoulders...

I cant stand Alonso for numerous reasons which I wont list here because this is a thread for positives only, so... Alonso had simply amazing year, made almost no mistakes and took probably almost everything out of the car throughout the year, cant expect more from a racing driver than that.

Im surprised you - being the starter of this wonderful thread - say that. Whether one likes him or not (As an out and out Hill fan, I started as someone who disliked him) his talent was obvious to everyone. Whatever people say about his 6 other titles, his title in 2000 was one of the best, if not best, title challenge that I have witnessed in my 19 years of being an f1 fan.

I don't disagree - but as an ardent but waverling JV fan (well - by 2000, it was no longer even really wavering - think I was a full on Hakkinen fan by then... :p ), I didn't much care how good he was - my list of grievances against him (going right back to 1994) was too long to be easily expunged. I an admire him now - but back in 2000? 1997 was still too fresh. For me anyway.

Michael Schumacher - some great moments in 2012 in generally adverse conditions, without becoming his old cocky self. He has learned tremendously in his second career and started to lose with dignity.

It has long been my dream to see Fantasy Island either remade as a series or turned into a movie.

Casting for such an endeavour would be very tricky, but in Felipe Massa, we have the perfect "Tattoo".

Horner cheating as usual. Not surprised.

Button once again outqualified by Lewis. Was it the setup or balance, Jenson?

Oh wait... this is a thread about saying something positive about the drivers we dislike. My mistake.

Vettel - He's quick and efficient.
Raikkonen - He was a great driver in his prime.

OK... that was painful. Nonetheless, got that over with.

I don't like Alonso's overtly political approach to racing. But he looked pretty damn fine this year. He's much sexier when he's smiling and relaxed than when he's grumpy.

Mmmm... so here we go. I do not dislike any racing driver, but somehow among my favorites are not Vettel, nor Rosberg, or not Button. But I can find a bunch of positives about any of them.

Button: Elegant at the wheel, Button is not used to dirty tactics, is a genuine sportsman, looks good, has been WDC, F1 needs more good englishmen like him as in the good old times.

Rosberg: It came to F1 like a revolution, I still remember his first F1 race. Has given Mercedes Benz their first victory in the modern times, something if MS had done would have been much more coveted. Being at the shadow of more famous or experienced teammates does not help, but I expect a good clean challenge from him to Lewis next season.

Vettel: What more can be said about this man? Extremelly quick, nobody is three WDC in a row without being one of the greats. It remembers me MS when he was at Benetton, I wasn't much of a fan of him in those days for the same reason. Being likeable or not has nothing to do with being a great talent, and Vettel would be remembered as one of the best.

This is exactly why I always strongly disliked Alain Prost, I never had that problem with Alonso though.

Hamilton - He is fast.
Di Resta - I like his accent.
Karthikeyan - He is consistent.
Senna - He has a sense of humour.
Schumacher - He is a friend of Sebastian, and a 7 times world champion.
Kovalainen - He is popular among fans.
Kubica - I am glad he is healthy and alive.

I have to say I struggled with Karthikeyan and Kovalainen the most. :|

Most:
Button - Mature...
Maldonado - is fast, has the raw speed and seems to respect other drivers more since the time around the race ban for Grosjean.

Much less:
Raikkonen - I only dislike him because of the circlejerk around him. He's a unique character and dares to be himself, so nothing wrong there.
Di Resta - I mean it's nothing wrong with him, just nothing special either. Only the hype from media made me dislike him, so not his own fault.
Perez - was a nice guy before F1 celeb stuff went over his head. Just needs to get back to that nice, humble guy.
Vettel/Alonso - can't really say I dislike them that much anymore. Both gained my respect in 2012.

I don't really dislike anyone a lot - just somewhat.

I have never rated Felipe at all. Cannot stand his whining and I was not sad to see him stumble in the beginning of the season.

However - at the end he was able to rise to the occasion. When the going got tough he did very well.

I don't know if this is against some vague rule hidden deep in the annals of the Autosport Forum basement, but in the interests of bringing some positivity I'd like to wake this thread up to add a few good words:

Lewis Hamilton: Masterful wet weather driver. Tangentially, his father is one of the classiest, most gentlemanly people that's graced the paddock in a long time.

Sebastian Vettel: Cracking sense of humour.

Chip in if you feel so inclined.

Dislike side: Alonso is the most annoying driver in modern F1 history. A whiny petulant man-child.

Positive side: He is tremendously gifted in both speed and racing ability and has been impressively able to sustain his performance in spite of getting older and being in depressing team situations. Having him in a top team would be a very good thing.

Lando Norris is not the complete waste of a seat I thought he would be.

Then again he is only my second least favorite driver. Not going to mention the number one, I never ever mentioned his name here, because eveything I would feel like writing about him would bring me a well deserved lifetime forum ban

Don't really hate any driver. Not a Ham fan, never have been, he always seems a bit too eager to be Mr perfect and the victim. (With emphasis on seems, as I obviously don't really know him and appearances in media can be very distorted)

That said, he's one hell of a great racing driver that is capable of doing amazing stuff

Well, the thread was started at the end of 2012 and there was a certain amount of animosity on the board during the button-Hamilton years. I’m not hugely surprised.

Fernando Alonso.

A post in this thread from a decade ago described him as a "petulant man-child" and I would agree, which is why I don't warm to him.

BUT he is a fantastic driver, has consistently been so from the moment he stepped into a Minardi (and probably before, I just hadn't seen him on my radar) and enriches F1 by still being there over twenty years later. I want him to win another grand prix, because he damned well deserves it.

Would I have a pint with him? Gods, no. Would I hire him to drive? In a flash.
