Looks like the only thing standing in its way is...money! Red Bull has pots of it but methinks they won't want to pour it away paying to host a race. Please oh please oh please!!!!

Seems there could be a few other problems but i hope it happens.
As much as i like Turkey (The circuit, not the food) i would love to see F1 go back to the old A1 Ring.

Isn't that still a problem though? The circuit is not the same as it used to be....http://www.bbc.co.uk...rmula1/20657102
the old A1 Ring.

Wasn't it at Austria where Montoya saw a strange animal?
"A horse with horns" he said.

also, with these last minute events and apparently just 40,000 tickets on sale, where could I get my tickets as quickly as possible?
Or in other words, what site will be the first to offer tickets to this last-minute event?

Thing is (no matter if its Turkey, France or Austria), would it become a one off? That is presuming that NJ does go ahead in '14 and Sochi is deferred until '15. Or will another European round get the elbow?

Screw it. This puppet version is nothing like original Österreichring.
of course, but it was still a great attempt to maintain some of its former greatness.

wow, I'd imagine laptimes approaching 1.00s!
#13
Posted 09 December 2012 - 11:46
1:20? I'd say that 1:10-1:15 would be possible. So it is similar to Interlagos

shows how much of a dog te F60 was
I'd love to see a lap on normal, and not on super hard demo tyres though.

Really nice flow to the track but seems too short to me now. Seems strange how F1 went to Austin this year, which had a tremendous race with over 250,000 people over the race weekend, but might want to go back to a place with a capacity of only 40,000. It wouldn't make any money. I guess we'll find out soon enough.
As long as BE gets his fee he couldn't care less how many people turn up for the race.

Track layout has hardly changed compared to 2003, last F1 race.

Looks the same as A1 ring, and Gene also confirmed this.

True, but it's still better than ~1/3 of the current calendar.Screw it. This puppet version is nothing like original Österreichring.

Overall current F1 Q lap times are hardly faster than in 2003.wow, I'd imagine laptimes approaching 1.00s!
Fastest laps during the race are often slower!

Pole lap in Brazil 2002
Pole position
Driver Juan Pablo Montoya Williams-BMW
Time 1:13.114
Pole lap Brazil 2012
Pole position
Driver Lewis Hamilton McLaren-Mercedes

should be around 1:06-1:08 with the current cars? it's a short lap, but it's probably not a big deal... the track seems nice, I think would be good to have a race there again.

This clip just goes to show what a beautiful circuit it was - even if it can't be compared with the original Österreichring...

So what? The original Österreichring was last used by F1 in 1987. Did you complain in 1996 as well?Screw it. This puppet version is nothing like original Österreichring.

F1 will not visit tracks with laptimes of only around 1:00.
Seriously, what does it matter...
btw this track even with it's resurrected / more sterilized form has more grass and gravel left than 95% of the tracks on the GP calendar.

This is one circuit that doesn't need DRS to have good racing. Clown Tilke should study carefully why racing on this circuit work (short, flick corners followed by straights) and racing on his circuits doesn't (long neverending corners, that prevent cars from following close each other closely, followed by the straights).

Tilke was the one who designed the post-Österreichring configuration...
IMO it's his only really good achievement. Sepang's okay-ish too I guess but the other venues bore me to death

I don't recall many fans being particularly keen when it was the Tilke designed 'A1 Ring' when F1 was there before and the 'RedBullRing' is essentially the same track. The old Osterreichring configuration was lovely and picturesque, but even in the 1980's it was dangerous. I recall there was talk a few years back of incorporating some of the old track in a new design, but RedBull were put off by the expense. Ironically, had they of decided to go for the full revamp, it would have a much stronger chance of being on the F1 calendar.

I can't see this coming off, as I see Turkey being the favourite for 'Race 20'.
The Turkish Grand Prix requires money from the government, which they've already said is not coming. The Austrian Grand Prix would be backed by Red Bull's billions on the track they own. I'd say that makes them the favourite.

Schumacher also made a great pass on Barrichello in '02

not the best advertisement for a track...

Why?It is for the team and their drivers this was most embarrassing. Also embarrassing for spectators,tv-wiewers,other teams,FIA,FOM and so on.
not the best advertisement for a track...
But for the track and their owners? No.

From what I've read it's essentially the same, but I still wonder what did they change in the middle of all those abandoned plans then a reconstruction.

Anyone has a map or photos to compare the current layout with the one last raced in F1 a few years ago?

This site is great for looking at the different track configurations over the years.

Thanks for the link it'll go to my favorites as it's more up-to-date than the resource I usually check for track layouts: http://theracingline...racingcircuits/
But all it says about the Red Bull Ring is it's "nearly the same layout", there's no updated map...

Who do you think did the redesign of the A1-Ring back in 1996?

While the Red Bull's proposal seemed a possibility when the Turkish government voiced its unwillingness to support a Grand Prix in Istanbul, Ecclestone quickly quashed the rumours saying that he had not been in touch with Red Bull.
"I have spoken to no one about it," Ecclestone told Kleine Zeitung.
"Right now I'm thinking about Turkey to return to Istanbul."
Ecclestone also highlighted that lodging in Austria is a problem and added that it was not essential for the 20th race slot to be filled next year, adding that he expects to make a final decision "early next week".
"Right now I rather think that we will go in to next year with only 19 Grand Prix. That would be no problem for Formula One."
keep your fingers crossed folks, now that bernie has strongly denied it, the probability of it happening has gone up

But if this does happen, I will be happy. Istanbul has nothing on the A1 ring.
I'd love to see this circuit and Paul Ricard come back. Two fast and flowing circuits are much needed.

Also I'm pretty sick and tired of so many circuits now having these long straights then slooooow tight corners, I like to see some flowing fast circuits too.

For those, who don´t speak german: The article says, that Dietrich Mateschitz (Red-Bull-owner and also owner of the Red-Bull-Ring in Spielberg, former A1-Ring, former Österreichring) and Bernie Ecclestone reached an agreement, that F1 returns to Austria. The date for the GP should be July the 6th 2014.
