well RG is already 30 mins behind, wonder what stopped him.

Way to start your Dakar, getting stuck on a sand dune in a silly 8km stage.
On top of that the time he lost was multiplied x3 so he's now 30 min. behind

I agree with Jp (shock) but that Kirby dude is really positively SH!TE

Carlton is the voice of the Dakar and has been for ages - wouldn't be the same without him.

I managed to catch the 10pm rally stage 1 last night...hoped for a repeat this morning but some live skiing was on instead. Will have to make a note of Phil's post as to what screenings are on at 0730 ( I find this a useful time to watch TV whilst enjoying breakfast).

i think the 3 times thing is pretty fake :|, i dont see a need for it, was to "spread the competitors" out according to calton, but that doesnt mean much really as they start the competitors 30sec - 2mins apart anyways on the road, and that just leaves the leaderboard being more compressed which is no big deal?

or you could just have a 39km stage instead.

the buggies where quicker than i thought they would be

I agree that the time multiplier is non sporting. They should have had a proper stage. I think the real test of the buggies will be when they start to run full stages day after day.

the 2 wheel drives shouldnt be so fast on the wrc style stages, or if it rains.

robbys plan was to build a lead in the opening stages and hope to hold the mini's off later in the rally :(

oh i think the us vs them thing (notice the french flag on them) relates to the curious things that happened last year, with the aso, and peterhansel, also depress on the bikes being unsporting and getting away with it too, a lil bit.

I was thinking they should scrap the entire stage results because the organizers admitted their equipment was faulty.

One of my colleagues has entered the bike competition.

It is his first Dakar and he is one of only two guys to ride a BMW - his goal is obviously to make it til the end :)

Had some engine problems during the second stage and had to retire - guess that's the reason nobody's keen on BMWs... :|

aren't BMWs too fragile for such environment, like dust, temperature, humidity and stress?

The Presence of Carlos Sainz with Gott navigator in an underdeveloped Buggy has increased my interest OMH this Dakar.
50 + years and leading after 2 stages he still knows how to drive!

Each vehicle has two GPS systems, precisely for this situations. After detailed overbnight review of the equipment, organizers say that Sainz second GPS was working fine and could have being used to find the Waypoint, but was apparently being used for "other purposes" (???), so they revert their initial decision and reinstate the 20+ minutes he lost finding the waypoint :(

...what other puposes you can use a GPS for? making coffee in the desert?

After a whole year I almost forgot how Peterhansel really is. The fact that he didn't help his teammate, Roma, was incredibly low. Does Peterhansel even understand word "team"?

Eurosport delayed again. The same top 10 fill in as last night.
There was supposed to be a live show earlier on Eurosport2 - which also wasn't shown when advertised...don't know if it was on later, I gave up with it.
Seems like it's starting now.

By the way, what happened to the trucks? Was the stage completely cancelled for them? There was no mention in Eurosport highlights and there are no results posted on the Dakar site...

on eurosport they said "trucks were not running at all today"

The times and rankings for the Cars section of the 2013 Dakar have been adjusted after yesterday's rain which led to Stage 8 being neutralized after 86km.

Stéphane Peterhansel in his Monster X-Raid All4Racing MINI leads Nasser Al-Attiyah in his Qatar Red Bull Buggy by 3 minutes 14 seconds: Giniel De Villiers is third +44:03, Eduard Novistkiy fourth +48:54 and Guerlain Chicherit fifth 1:04.50.

Chicherit was one of only 5 competitors to complete the stage before the neutralization, and his winning time - he was 12 minutes 15 fastest than Peterhansel - has been reflected in the adjusted times.

David Casteu of France on a 450 YZF Rally Yamaha now leads the Bikes, Marcos Patronelli and Gerard De Rooy the Quads and Trucks respectively.

could have been worse.

Funny thing that all were given Peterhansel's time, because this means that Roma actually got screwed over by 3 minutes, since his time at the end of S8 was 3 minutes worse than Peterhansel's.

I saw some of the live show on Eurosport GB; they said the delays with the nightly prog is due to waiting for live events to finish on Eurosport international.

It's so common for the Dakar to have timing problems and there's no easy solution to a situation where some vehicles complete a stage before the stage is shut down. I think they went with the keep the leader in front but make sure his challengers stay in touch.

As for Eurosport.... Loving the coverage but not enjoying the faffing around that has ended up with the end of the show being cut or missing a show altogether :(

During yesterdays highlights to finish his interview Nasser said something along the lines of "I dont know if it is better to be the rabbit or the fox"
Which Carlton followed up with "What about being the pigeon" :drunk:
