Gordon Shedden at Rockingham this year. A championship winning save as it transpired.

I got lucky with that one, found a 97 season review video somewhere and thought I'll see it there because it should be something amazing.

DC has never been touted as someone great with handling oversteer (yet he's driven beatifully around Monaco so often), but he had a great save in the '97 Monza-race, on his way to victory btw. I don't remember if it was in the Ascari-chicane or if it was in one of the Lesmo's, but it was a high-speed, very hairy moment, which he caught beatifully.
Haven't found it on youtube, but I haven't searched much either.

It was Ascari. I've been hunting for that clip for years!

As mentioned earlier in this thread, I am really thinking Alonso had a REALLY nice save at Brazil. I saw it happening live on telly and right after that my brain already was visualizing him going straight left into the barriers and destroying the car, but when i returned to reality tenths of seconds later, he saved it. Heart in the mouth moment on worn slick tyres on a wet track!

The camera placing in the exit of the hairpin when it had sweepers next was SO great!! Amazing sense of speed and cars looked sort of powersliding ages after the moment where they pick up the throttle again. The cars might be planted and easy to keep flat from a driver POV, but from the outside you could see all the twitches happening.

It only catches half of it but you can just about hear/make out that he SOMEHOW gets away with it, luck or skill? Either way, if he comes off its probably game over...

I remember in 2008, Hamilton had a crazy tank slapper while going full pelt through turn 8, yes the "turn 8", in Q2, he managed to keep all 4 wheels in the white lines. James Allen, being James Allen "that was one of the greatest saves since Banks vs Pele"

This one is neat, look at the right rear tyre trying to come off the rim!

http://www.youtube.c...be_gdata_player

Mark Hughes stood trackside here and said Hamilton was doing this sort of thing lap after lap at turn 6, hastening the rotation of the car.

I still think when Kobayashi saved himself from impending doom at Suzuka in 2011 at 130R of all places was an awesome display of 'greatest saves'

Well, that was James Allen being very James Allen.....

I've seen dozens of more remarkable saves since 1970

Love that one!

How about Johnny Herbert at Spa 1995? (start watching at the 34:00 mark).

One of my favourite races, that.... thought Murray was going to have a stroke!

G Villeneuve in the wet at Montreal 1981, making the podium after driving with a broken front wing

On behalf of scots everywhere, can I just apologise for Jackie Stewart? His commentary here is awful, channeling Frazer from Dad's Army - "we're all doomed...". He'll get blackflagged, he is completely blind (even though the wing probably only takes up around 10% of his field of vision), it'll go under his tyre and burst it, he'll definitely crash etc etc. Awa and bile yer heid old man. (Even though he wasn't then, he sure sounds like it)

Sideways in the wet in 130R at Suzuka. This is one of the greatest saves I've ever seen. Found it by completely by accident, but this looks just amazing.

I know that this is in a sport where saving drifts is the whole point, but to get a car to this slip angle and still recover is pretty mind boggling. Also, the commentators are awesome.

Gigi Galli.

You could argue that this was a slide, but IMO there's no way in hell he intended to get it that far out of shape so....epic save!

While not strictly F1, no thread about Grand Prix saves is complete without Randy Mamola:

https://www.youtube....A...screen&NR=1

Amazing saves... however the yellow one is not the great Mamola but the spanish rider Alvaro Molina, Aprilia Cup 1998 Jarama track. And he even went to won that race!!!!

I think that's Agustín Escobar rather than Molina.

I can't remeber exactly where and when ('99 I guess), but I remember Montoya saving a big sideways moment flat out on on a superspeedway in his Champcar. That was mighty impressive.

Mauro Baldi deliberately spinning the Sauber Mercedes to avoid his team mate Mass when he wrote off the sister car hitting a C2 car at Brands '88, or Tambay? catching the spin when nose to tail with Ferte at Le Mans '89...

Mansell costing himself the title when he held the Williams at Adelaide with the shredded rear tyre, a red flag would probably have won the championship for him!

Oh and a quick edit to suggest any lap Ronnie Peterson ever completed...

Gigi Galli was always great to watch, but that's not a "save" at all, it's setting the car up for the corner.

and 2003

I'm still wondering whether that wasn't intentional - locking up the rears just to get faster direction change and get earlier on the throttle.

No it wasn't, it was him moving brake bias to the rear for the big stops to be able to work the front better, it just locked the rears slightly.
