McLaren starts paying for engines this year?

It seems someone had to tell him how to wear a shirt when driving for McLaren.

Next he needs a haircut.... C'mon Martin admit this new open, friendly Macca has failed and return to core values.

Good stuff.

I wonder if Perez will be able to beat Button on points over 3 years?

It just goes to show that Sergio could very well do that but Jenson could beat him 2-1 and even be a WDC. Hardly a bragging right when you look at other variables as points are only worthy over a single season especially if you are beaten overall. Just ask Jenson ;)

I'd remember reading somewhere that Perez was quite a way short of the physical fitness of Lewis and Jenson. Does anybody have a source on that?

Will have been a tough winter for the lad if so! :D

I'm pleased for Perez, but seeing him in that McLaren shirt for the first time just made me think "wow, Perez gets promoted to McLaren and Kobayashi gets no drive". Unbelievable what a difference a couple of races can make.

You sound bitter. How about waiting to see how Perez goes on track before writing him off as some sort of pay driver.

That room has been used for shots in the past with those same helmets lined up and I can assure you Hamilton's helmet is just out of shot that's all. ;)

Intentionally so? ;)

Thank god we got a nice changeup this year.

I think he looks like Mike Myers in Wayne's World with that hair and cap combination.

I've always strongly disliked McLaren, but I’m a fan for Perez, so for once I will have to look past my blind McLaren hate and support Sergio. :cat:

His talent, bar the fact that certain people may question, is is very clear IMO. It's always amazed me how quick he is in difficult conditions, and how good he is at preserving tyres. :)

Despite that, I have to give the team credit. McLaren know how to build a quick (but slightly fragile) car. I hope he makes the most of this golden opportunity.

Did you see any Telmex logos on the Mclaren outfit? how about tequila Cuervo?, Telcel, Claro etc
Sergio is not bringing any money he was hired because they think he can deliver.

You do know that McLaren would have given the press access based on them asking limited and generic questions and of course no mention of the man he is replacing.

Hamilton could have stayed with McLaren if he wished, by all public accounts. Nobody ever said that Sergio was selected over Lewis or that he brings more to the table than Lewis.

To be honest that would have been a stupid question because Sergio is replacing a very accomplished driver. You say Sergio brings with him more money but last time I checked Lewis was worth a hell of a lot of money with his marketing.

I wasn't talking about the chrome, but about the Mercedes written on the livery. Will it disappear too? (Should have been more specific earlier)

Id imagine they'll either just have the Mercedes star or keep the usual logo.

It could disappear altogether though. I imagine they'll now have the same deal as Force India?

Force India have no Mercedes logos/decals anywhere on their car.

Maybe Mercedes are a bit ashamed and asked them to remove them? "Can't you put an Opel badge on it?"

What is it about these pictures that turn me into a cheshire cat? It was just so when Kimi went to Macca and Lotus (okay, and even Ferrari  ) and then When Vettel was plastered in his new Beemer shirt and later into STRF then RBR duds. I guess the confirmation that these favs of mine are on the move just sits well with me.

He looks great in the Macca colors. I have no doubt that he will be a smashing success and all the Macca fans will have yet another new gun to follow + me again (sorry but I come with the driver, lol). :D  !!

Nice catch! Maybe it will be, but it almost unnoticeable, they could do something easier to spot.

This is all so wrong. Perez might just be the most overrated driver in F1, certainly in McLaren's book at least. A couple of nice position, taken with a great strategy, and this guy gets to drive for McLaren? With all the stupid mistakes he's made? I'd hire Grosjean over Perez any day.

I hope he plays it smart this year, don't overdrive, learn what is racing for a top team, learn from Jenson.
A couple of podiums and a win would make for a successful season imo

Im really excited at the prospect of watching Perez this season, nothing better than watching someone get their first few wins obviously if the 28 is up to the task.

I used to enjoy Vettel winning believe it or not.

How do you know Grosjean has more speed than Perez? Don't forget Perez is still at 22, the same age Lewis started to race in McLaren. McLaren will refine him for the upcoming years.

Nothing against the guy, but he's very fortunate to be landing this seat. Has shown solid progress throughout the past 2 seasons but never truly outshone Kobayashi, despite some remarkable podium finishes. The result of their partnership should not have been a promotion to McLaren for one and the other without a seat. Drivers with more impressive F1 cv's have been overlooked in recent years. But that's how F1 rolls sometimes.

His success at McLaren won't depend much on his speed and talent: he clearly has it. He will have to adjust himself to McLaren though and make it his team as much as it is Jenson's, and that will be a difficult task. Reading his quotes however he's at least clever enough to have already understood this, so it might just work out for him.

Let's see how he deals with the pressure at McLaren. Finishing second in a Sauber makes him a star, finishing second in a McLaren is only 'first of the losers'.

Looking at the races towards the end of last year, he may be lucky to even finish if we're being honest - he does seem to make mistakes when the heat is on. I have to agree with a lot of the posters on here, there were better people they could have hired. Between Button and him, this is possibly the weakest pairing in the top teams.

:(

:D Well, at least we have a good chache to witness some entertaining wreckless rookie driving at Macca next year
It was a while ago they had a real young guy in the car

But it must be said, he is really lucky - there are several other youngsters in the field that could have filled the seat as well as he will do.
I think. Like Kobayachi and Hulkenberg. Or Grosjean or Maldonado - if they can stop crasching...

It would be interesting to see what happens if Checo succeeds in doing something (e.g. win the WDC) that Lewis failed to do. Imagine the meltdown in Lewis' fan base... ;)

Yes but what does finishing nowhere (outside top-10) benefit? Perez may be in for a rough year, unless he starts performing more consistently and stops colliding. It's McLaren and three or four podiums will not be enough.

Perez is 22, that makes him 3-4 years younger than drivers like Hulkenburg, Di Resta or Kobayashi. Despite that, he's already achieved more in his F1 career than any of the drivers mentioned above. Very few drivers impress so much at such early age that they are given a top seat so soon. Whether people like it or not, wish what you want, but Perez is the next big thing.

We all know Mclaren can design a quick car. It would be funny to see Perez win the championship though. Imagine if Mclaren sorted out their pit crew, strategy and reliability a year after Lewis left the team, and Checo won the championship in his first season there. The meltdown in rage amongst Lewis fanboys will simply be hilarious.
