Ron Haslam entered on the Honda GB RS1000 superbike, accompanied by Barry Symmons and Mal Carter.
Greg Pretty on the Pitmans TZ 750 awaits the start, while on the left Ralph Hannan, deep in conversation with Radar, waits on the Yoshimura Z1R and wonders where rider Dave Aldana could be... little knowing Aldana would be still seated in a toilet when the first leg jumped...
Ron Haslam awaits the start : to the left, #49 Len Willing, TZ 750, and on the right the TZ 750 of former motocross star Trevor Flood. Mick Smith leaning on Croz's XR69.
Start of the first leg. Hard to pick, but across the front are Haslam, Dennis Neill (CB1100R), Wayne Gardner (Mentor Honda CB1100R), Steve Trinder (Total Hunter RG500 Suzuki) and Graeme Crosby on the Suzuki GB XR69.
Crosby jumped into an early lead.
Trinder joined Crosby in the first of two monumental dices.
Croz ahead of Lee Roebuck and the emerging Wayne Gardner. Having won the Castrol 6 Hour with Andrew Johnson on a CB1100R for Mentor Motorcycles, Gardner was racing a Mentor-supplied CB1100R superbike, built and tuned by racecar tuning guru Peter Molloy. At the final Sandown round, Gardner pulled the bike off the trailer and won a superbike race in the wet in front of Mamoru Moriwaki, and his career took off.
A torrid scrap developed between #96 Graeme Muir (TZ750), #4 Dennis Neill (CB1100R), #59 Ron Boulden (TZ 750) and Haslam.
Aldana made it for the second leg, and while not a major player in the series, was still great value off-track !

Clip from the round at Adelaide International Raceway : In the first pic, Crosby has the jump, ahead of #49 Len Willing, #52 Gary Coleman, #4 Dennis Neill and D Steve Trinder, now mounted aboard the Taylor Team Ansett TZ 750. In the second pic, Greg Pretty disputes the lead with Croz, with Trinder in close attendance. Sadly, Trinder crashed heavily, badly breaking his leg, and leaving Croz with a points lead going into the final round at Sandown.
