‘Life is measured in achievement, not in years alone.’ - Bruce McLaren

It’s all a long way from that small south London lock-up back in 1963. But Bruce wouldn’t wish for us to merely look backwards without looking forwards, too.

Accordingly, echoes of our past will reverberate throughout a series of unique events and celebrations to be held across our anniversary year.

From the McLaren 50 logos we’ll proudly sport on our team shirts, through our specially commissioned heritage video features, to the launch of our new MP4-28 Formula 1 car with Jenson Button and Sergio Perez on January 31st, every lap, every corner, every mile and every road we take will be an opportunity to revel in McLaren’s present while recalling our 50-year past.

Ron Dennis CBE, executive chairman, McLaren Group and McLaren Automotive, said: “McLaren’s history is long and storied, but McLaren’s legacy is harder to define – and that’s because it’s still being vividly written every day by the dedicated men and women who work at the McLaren Technology Centre.

“Bruce McLaren wrote the beginning of the story, and the legend is going to continue for many years to come. I’m only a chapter, not the book, and I want other people to come in and write their own chapters as time goes by.

“This is a book that’s still being written, and that, perhaps, is the greatest legacy of McLaren.”

FANTASTIC!

Nice list of achievements of the last 50 years for the team. I sincerely hope they continue from strength to strength.

What a better year to win the WCC and WDC than McLaren's 50th? Let's hope the 28 and the team are up to the challenge.

It would be nice, even though it was barely visible in the teamwear.

I don't know where to post this...but it has nothing to do with the car but here goes:

joseluisf1: Mas rumores: McLaren podría estar reduciendo algo recursos en F1 para dedicarlos a otras areas con el fin de asegurar el futuro del grupo

"More rumors: McLaren could be reduced somewhat in F1 to devote resources to other areas in order to ensure the future of the group"

don't really know how to read into that. feel free to move this into its own topic if need be?

I wonder if the anniversary means they will run a special livery this year? Anyone remember the fantastic blue livery that Williams had in testing a few years ago and the orange for 2006? Would be great to see that back again.

It never occured to me until seeing the logo history that the current branding evolved from the Marlboro chevron.

I presume that this is from McLaren themselves? It is a real pity they don't know that the 'small lock-up' where the team originated was actually in New Malden, Surrey, which wasn't even part of London back in 1963. And even today, it certainly isn't in south London. McLaren need to get their own history straight!

From an unimpressed former resident of New Malden!

I know it's supposed to be a WDC gallery, but they could have squeezed Denny in there.

Happy Birthday Mclaren. (please sort your pitstops this year and give Jenson a good balance)

I have to imagine were he still alive, Bruce would be absolutely thrilled to see that his creation has survived for 50 seasons.

I wish he were still here to see all of the success his company has had. I wonder if he would ever have imagined all the race victories and world championships that were to come for the team.

I hope they see another 50 years.

Ron shows his respect to Bruce and he exists to strengthen Bruce's creation more and more every year. He has achieved this very well indeed. Kudos to him

Do you know the address in New Malden of the first McLaren base, was it a workshop for building cars or an office>

Seems a bit odd not to have the 1990 MP4/5b, was quite a bit different to the 1989 MP4/5 and Senna won the world title in it! They have the 17 and 17d there!!

Yes, it was in Wellington Crescent, a small industrial estate. We tracked it down in this thread in The Nostalgia Forum and it has been verified by Howden Ganley and Eoinn Young who were both there at the time, living in a nearby house with Bruce McLaren. It was a shed of some sort, which we do not think still survives, used as the team's first base.

Thank you so much for your reply and that link, very interesting. Has the building on Wellington Cres been identified, is it still there?

Why is the 1970 M7A shown with No 1, I think thats the 1968 Denny Hulme car. They haven't shown the M14A or D from 1970/71 either

You will find a large number of them are now sitting at McLaren dealerships around the world, each usually with a special attachment to the country they reside.

Not in New Zealand though ): The Bruce McLaren Trust does a fantastic job though. Saw some beautiful Can Am cars running today.

Not sure, i'd like to hope they are the true chassis to that particular car but i doubt the engine and gearbox are present.

EDIT: Quote

Now, with the launch of the 12C, more of those dust sheets are being pulled off and the treasures of Unit 2 will be seen far more widely. McLaren is opening 35 showrooms by the end of 2012 to supply its new sports car and every one will have a Unit 2 car on display when it opens: not a plastic dummy, but a genuine race car: one that bites.

Likewise the odd inclusion of the MP4-19, which was practically a midfield car.

Think they have tried to represent at least one car per season, people forget about the MP4-18 debacle "the car that never raced" and the fact the heavily modified MP4-17, the 17-D was brought in instead.

Correct!

There is a McLaren dealership 5 minutes from where I live and I can assure you that the MP4/5 in the showroom is absolutely the real thing, raced by Prost, from unit 2. Engine and gearbox included, correct 'Personal' steering wheel and digital instrument panel. And it's lovely!

Great to hear, i remember seeing the McLaren dealership at Knutsford and they had an early West era McLaren there. Think it was an MP4-13 but not fully sure.

Quote:

In many cases, the cars have a specific link with the location. The dealership in Brussels will get a 2004 MP4/19: Kimi Raikkonen won the Belgian Grand Prix for McLaren that year in that car. Ayrton Senna won the 1993 Monaco Grand Prix in the MP4/8, so that's what you'll see in the principality. James Hunt won the 1976 US Grand Prix in a McLaren M26, you'll find one in the Philadelphia dealership. Not all heritage cars are from Formula 1 competition: Dallas gets a McLaren M16 from the same era, one of the greatest-ever Indy cars with three victories in the legendary race.

They don't seem to be limited to F1 cars, chances are if any of the Can Am cars are still in McLaren ownership they probably already are.
