Smaller side pods... is it really an advantage? Tires dictates the frontal projection area, so the car gets globally identical resistance as the last year? IS the flow between the two tires improved by the absence of side pods in between? ...

of course advantage. otherwise we wouldnt be talking about how tight williams rear end is, how compact redbull's rear package is, how huge xxxx's undercut is, or how bulky yyy's sidepod and rear-end oh that's going to be slow, etc etc.
Everything that matters is the amount and quality of airflow at the upper diffuser. either smaller volume of sidepod, undercut, coanda exhaust, tunnel etc are all for the purpose, channeling more and cleaner air to upper diffuser. it's just that one feature isnt the sole critical factor.
It seems they could even lower the nose most likely thanks to the new sidepods, for lower cog at front to put more weight on tyres and make it work. Front instability and lack of overall performance in low-mid speed range is their major weakness last year (probably the worst of established teams in that aspect), so those changes on new car look to be to overcome it.

The advantage isn't in drag, but in the amount of 'undisturbed' airflow they can get to the exhausts and the back of the car

I think the likes of Lotus and McLaren have an edge on Sauber with the quality of air flow to the rear. Sauber and Mercedes look too bulky from the rear perspective.

The reason of wide side pods in F1 car is not only that they are necessary for cooling. They are also used to manipulate air flow around the rear.

Are Sauber planning on having a full step cover by the start of the season. I can't see the benefit of the present nose they're running.

Must say, this car must have the narrowest sidepods in years and years.

Great looking car with many interesting details. Sauber has set the trend in some areas, with teams like RBR copying elements. I find the panels along the air intake interesting, maybe to make DRD testing easier.

According to finnish commentator Oskari Saari, Sauber sounds totally different to any other car on track....it's like they have double enginenoise. He tested several times with eyes closed and everytime he knew 100% thatit was Sauber that passed over him.

Where does Sauber get it's money from? On James Allan's blog I read that they have a similar budget to Lotus, but I don't understand because Sauber has no car company behind them or big sponsors. Telmex is 30 millions or something? They'll probably need 100 more.

Well, Sauber has definitely a problem (but so have all other teams, except for the top 4), Telmex will probably leave at the end of 2013, they have loans in the high double figures, some say even triple.
As long as the banks keep quiet it'll be OK for now.

Telmex will only leave if Gutiérrez fails miserably. Otherwise they will be there, if Slim Jr's words are taken at face value (long term partnership, we love these guys, blah blah blah yadda yadda).

Saw something earlier on twitter that said that Hulkenberg had to have the heel on his shoes altered so he could fit his feel into the cockpit, that how small this thing is!

This is by far my favourite looking car of 2013!! I really hope it goes well...
Has anyone heard if all the cooling package worked at the test in Jerez?? It looks too small??

As great as the car looks, after watching some video of it in testing, its sometimes hard to make it out. From certain angles and certain light, it can be hard to distinguish it from the Williams or the Mercedes.

Don't get your hopes too high, the C31 and C30 were also dubbed one of the best cars after the initial tests, and they were. But as soon as the developpement machine of the big teams started to operate, the cars lost a lor of their relative excellency.

Guys, i was watching the Jerez tests and i have to say that the sauber impresed me. It looked planted, good under braking and the back was pretty neat under acceleration.

I know it will be overdeveloped by the big names, but i wouldn´t be surprised if it does a good job in the first races.

btw, the colours doesn´t do justice to the car in the circuit. Just too sober compared to the rest of the field.

I hope Hulkenberg has the car to take on because he clearly showed he was able to last year, especially in the last race. I think he would have won Brazil if not for the stupid safety car, that completely ruined his chances of a win.

This car looks excellent.

This isn't always the case, though - in 1995, 2004 and 2010 the car was clearly better at the end of the year, and in most other years there has not been a significant drop-off in performance.

I'd rather see Sauber fall behind during the season than again seeing them hanging in the ropes after their manufacturer partner decides to call it a day. We were so close to losing them.

Car seems to be working good so far, everyone's impressed by the speed and no reliability problems yet. Maybe some more Sauber podiums this year. Though i have to say that while i do wish them to do well, i will always have to think that this could've been Kobayashi's car.

Really excited to see how well Sauber and Nico can go this year. One of favourite drivers and probably my favourite teams. I love that they've gone with an aggressive car design, it'll be integral for them to try and get some early good results in the Asian fly-aways, as they don't tend to be able to keep up development.
