What Pic said the difference between the Caterham and Marussia was KERS. Personally I think the cosworth is the more powerful engine. Where Renault benefits is driveability and fuel economy.

Williams went to the Renault because of driveability and packaging. While they can't really change the engine parts, I would expect Cosworth to have improved the maps since last year.

Jules Bianchi opinion on the car in australia:

"Friday, on the dry the rear of the car was too strong so i had understeer. Saturday morning we went the other way around. Rear was unstable , and very strong front end of the car, i don't like this. In the wet it was penalizing for qualy. But it was not that bad for a dry race. I need time and mileage to find balance suiting to my driving.Bit it was not a disaster. We will try some tricks in Malaysia"

Van der Garde beat Pic in FP1 and was very close (less than a tenth) to him in FP2....

When they ended ahead. No matter how much, or little it means. You do get beaten in FP as well.

Bianchi half a second of Q2 when all the established runners have been trouble free. One has to say Symonds has delivered a neat nimble package that will punch above it's weight. Points could be a possibility since the cars race pace deficit is less.

Jules has always been fast, i've watched him for several years now and his speed is undeniable, his race craft has always been clumsy at best though, if he sorts that out he has the potential to been a very good driver.

In the hope of rain/high attrition i've put some money on him getting into the top 10! Also had money on Massa for pole...

Properly good effort by Bianchi. Chilton looking every bit the sub-par pay driver, but that was always going to be the case. Real shame someone like Glock or even Koba isn't in that second seat.

History is never going to look back on Chilton too fondly, but he is going to need to really pick up the pace if he wants to be remembered as better than woeful. 1.2s off the sister car and beat by one of the Caterhams.

Chilton looks seriously out of his depth.

I hope he can turn it around.

He is out of his depth but luckily he has his bank balance as a buoyancy aid!

He's going to need it as a publicity aid unless his dad pays Jules to slow down.

Today on brazilian tv broadcast someone said that there were talks for a fusion between Marussia and Caterham for 2014 ... does anyone have read about it?

Bianchi was good today, almost reached Bottas's time.

Chilton has a hard job getting anywhere near Bianchi. Jules' S2 was faster than Vettel's in Q1 (32.8 vs 32.9) in a downforce dependant part of track and Seb ran higher DF than normal as he alluded to in the presser.
Great effort- Really could we see this team getting into Q2 on merit at some point if they can develop well?

This. I hope the Marussias get closer to the midfield so he can work on his weakness.

At the moment, we're not learning anything. He has bundles more F1 mileage than Chilton, and his prospects have always been better anyway.

I guess that on top of being the best looking car on the grid, this Marussia is surprisingly fast, actually.

Perhaps this team has been underrated, or is it a testament of Bianchi's talents as a driver? I'm guessing a combination of both.

Perhaps this team has been underrated

Historically, it hasn't been underrated because the team was genuinely not doing a particular good job. The issue is that under Symonds' technical leadership it has taken a massive step forward but people are still labelling it like it was under Worth Engineering.

Very impressive. Can't say I ever thought Marussia would get ahead of Caterham, and now they seem to be closing on the midfield. Pretty good for a car that was my mocked by several people at launch time.

Bianchi is a very fast driver. Only his racecraft is questionable. I dont think he will struggle to have a seat in a much better car next year, for recall, his manager is the son of FIA boss, and he have Ferrari engine in his bag...

Sauber would be the best and most logical fit, provided they stay with Ferrari engines.

Can't compare laps from different days, let alone different seasons, with (slightly) different rules and different tyres. Marussia have clearly improved but Williams have fallen back too.

But the comparison include the best time of the Q1 this and last year. Marussia have gained 2,2 seconds to the frontrunners. Impressive. I don't remember how it was last year, but this year some of the frontrunners made their best lap times in Q1 on softer tyre and Bianchi managed to be only 1,6 seconds off the pace! This is for sure far better than anything they showed since they are in F1.

Would have been interesting had Glock been in the second car, as opposed to Chilton, but those cars seem to be pretty much naked of sponsorship.

Another impressive performance today, Marussia have seriously made progress. Funny to think that Bianchi was only a last minute choice once Razia's sponsorship money didn't turn up and he missed out on the Force India seat. In any case, he's carrying the team at the moment, though we should give Chilton more than one race before writing him off.

Bianchi close to Williams in qualifying and his racepace in Melbourne was very good, so there's good hope he can take the fight with Williams and perhaps a Toro Rosso.

You've got to give thanks to the Motor Racing Gods that Razia's money never materialised. Razia was no quicker than Chilton. What on earth is going on in GP2 that drivers can win races but show little or no aptitude in an F1 car. The only outstanding talent I can find in this year's GP2 grid is Felipe Nasr.

Chilton has had one race, sure he's not going to bother anyone north of P20 anytime soon but he's had quiet a few issue this weekend too, Jules is obviously a level above him and has more F1 milage under his belt. Lets just lay of Max for a while, give him a chance to settle.

As for the current GP2 grid, James Calado is pretty damn good too, only beaten to GP3 by Bottas and Brit F3 by JEV and has been very impressive since joining GP2.

Last year it was painful seeing talent like Glock go round in a car some way off the pace, this year I would say is bittersweet, not having Glock but a great car. Imagine if Glock was there, I think there may have even been a scalping today....

Seconded

Calado is class. Wasn't really convinced of him in F3 but he seems to have really taken a step forward in his GP3 year.

I think Glock's head dropped last year. A journeyman like Pic just had no right being anywhere near him. In any event in Bianchi, marussia have a quick driver hungry to make name for himself. He even said there was there was even more performance to be found during qualifying, WTF?
PS not many people seem to be moaning about the Cosworth now, are they?

A true shame that this likely marks the end of Cosworth in F1. With a new engine formula and their history with turbos, it would have been great to see what they could produce next year - especially for a low budget team.

AGREED
Jules has been very impressive so far.
Of all the 3rd tier team drivers we have witnessed since the grid was extended, Jules is without a doubt a driver to watch.
I really hope HE is the driver to claim a 1st Championship point for the minnows of F1.

Well Bianchi played it safe.

These first races are crucial.

Monaco will be important with track position.

Bianchi was actually ahead of Maldonado and setting pretty similar laptimes before Pastor retired. So once again a good race by him. Tyre wear seemed to be a bit of an issue for them. Chilton, well i dont know what to say. Finished a minute behind Bianchi again, and was beaten by the Caterhams. I'm not impressed, but atleast he has mostly kept the car on the road. But he really needs to find more pace.

Easier said than done Wingco. I always remember Ron Dennis saying; it's easier for a driver to find consistency than speed.
