A big thank you Lee for starting a trend on Phillip Island, the meeting is so big, the event needed a trend all to it self.
And thank you to those who have contributed already with you fabulous photos, can you please keep them coming.

I hope this is where everyone now will post everything on the Phillip Island Classic for years to come.

The noise that this beast made while warming up in the garage was incredible - for the first time I can remember I had to walk outside as my ears were hurting too much.

Bill Hemming has put the "T" in front of 300 & 400 on his personal cars. I've not seen it elsewhere.

I am interested in the fact that cars that were raced as 7 litre in the day are now 8.8 or 9 litre. A bit of modern technology sneaking !! in there. Though I am sure they would have been magic to listen too, out on the track. Up close would hurt!

To be fair Lee, I think the use of 8 Litre + engines was fairly widespread by '71. According to racingsportscars.com, Graeme Lawrence was using a 527ci (8.6 Litre) Chevy in his McLaren M12 as early as Watkins Glen in July 1970.

The M8F works cars of Hulme and Revson in 1971 appeared to start off using 494ci (8.1 Litre) motors, but had been upgraded to 8.3 Litre units by the end of the year.

Having said this, after an admittedly fairly cursory glance, I'm pushed to find evidence of "period" usage of 8.8 Litre/ 9 Litre engines. One thing is for certain though - an 8.3 Litre lump now will certainly be producing a lot more horses than it did in '71.....

Larrys helmet must be nearly past its use by date. He has not raced for 5 years now.The Holden sticker while driving a Ford powered italian car is a hoot. Though one glimpse is all you need to know who it is. He has been using that basic design since the 70s at least.
The French Blue car has advertising [as per period] of nasty near illegal substances! I am surprised the thought police did not get them!

I was not aware of big block development that big that early. I would not have thought those Reynolds blocks would have gone that big. And Oh yes I am sure they have s*itloads more power now which is a lot more reliable too.

This got to me all weekend. A very honest 1275 Sprite, beautifully prepared and driven. Monstered and beat (in one race) a beautifully prepared Healey 3000 and very fast Clubman, never lower than 3rd... not to mention hordes of Porsches, Corvettes and assorted TR6s, a Morgan Plus 8 etc. The very essence of club racing. The very antithesis of the prima donnas strutting around the Albert Park paddock this weekend. (Sorry, I've never denied being a Grumpy OM)

This is the Phil Hill car, which starred dramatically in the final round at Longford in 1965. It was bought by Bill Patterson for John McDonald to drive, then passed to Don O'Sullivan then Gordon Stephenson in WA. Gordon won the WA Racing Car title with it, probably its biggest victory since McLaren drove it... McDonald did win a minor race at Surfers, however.

It's listed as a 741 on the entry list, I may have photographed the chassis tag, I'll check.

Its Chassis 741-1. owned by Joe Calleja, bought from VP Racing recently. Ex-Stuck.
