At the risk of getting lynched for excessive optimism, I'm really excited for this year. Thanks to the vanity panels the majority of the cars are no longer hideous. Ferrari might have produced a real contender again, giving Alonso a real chance. It will be fascinating to see if Jenson can lead McLaren, if Checo can become a contender. And Lewis starting afresh at Mercedes. We could 4-5 teams fighting for wins. This could be great.

And then in 2014 we get cool engines and technology again. There's a lot to be happy about.

Or this could all be delusions brought on by getting Senna for my birthday...

Enjoy watching the 'prost pantomime villain' show and the overdubbed sounds that are right up with 'Drive' in terms of WTF.

On-topic, I think this year could be excellent. Depends as ever on relative car performance though. I will be watching Romain, Bottas, Hulkenberg and Steve keenly, they are the future. Completely bored with the uber-strict regs, which have sadly constricted even further for 14. But thats the FIA all over. I think this could be the closest ever F1 grid in history, bar the pointless newbies of course.

You're right about those young drivers, I think. I'm curious to see how Grosjean turns out this year, as I've been very critical of him last year for his silly mistakes but I can see him becoming a quality race winner like Webber. All of these rookies, I'm hoping we see at least one or two future stars from this year. Webber and Massa, will anybody replace them for 2014? And are we going to see a multitude of winners like 2012 again? Or will one team dominate?

Think ted Kravitz called him it too? Esteban is the Spanish equivalent of Steven if I'm not mistaken.

I'm excited for the rookies too. Also hopefully calado will win gp2.

Waat? Translating names, albeit poorly sometimes, is just a bit of fun. I googled his surname Gutierrez which means son of Walter, apparently. Steve Walterson.

Best one is Antonio Banderas, which becomes Tony Flags in English.

I'm excited to watch Sebastian Vettel go for #4 and Kimi Raikkonen go for #2 and Perez take his virgin ride in a top car (I have huge expectations). Also interested in seeing how Hamilton and Nico do. Nico H, Charles P and E Gutierrez are also interesting to me.

I'm not much interested in the other rookies, but with so many rookies, one has to wonder how it might go. How many do we have exactly? I mean real rookies, not counting sophomores, etc...?

Don't know what to think really. I'm pretty sure it won't be the start like 2012 with 7 different winners in the first 7 races. Remember, this season is just an evolution of 2012, so I expect the season to start where it pretty much ended in Brazil. McLaren and Red Bull at the front, followed by Ferrari and Lotus. Perhaps Mercedes can spring a surprise by being closer to those four.

Im a finn, and it doesn't really mean anything. It's unusual surname for a finn anyways. :confused:

This is starting to get wildly off course but Bottas doesn't really mean anything. After a short googling I found out that the name originated from a name given to a house. To get back on topic, I really look forward to the season. Nice to see how the rookies will cope, how Lewis will cope with Nico, can Crashjean keep it on the road etc etc. Can't wait!

a Vettel is also a german word for an old lady with a foul character... (basically a witch in traditional sense) x.x so translating names is not a great idea...

especially since Esteban sounds much better than Steve or Steven

Well, in Latvian "botas" is a slang term for running shoes :> Not all surnames that end with "s" are Latvian and not all Finnish surnames end with "nen".

I hope Bottas does well, and can be the new great finn. Also looking forward to Hamilton at Mercedes and seeing how Hulk gets on at Sauber, after filling Sergio's shoes.
It looks like a good season, but lets wait until Barcelona until we can say for certain that this season will be closer than a hair.

It always means something you might just not know about it. My own surname, for example (Sá) is a deterioration of a word (Sala, which is also another surname) that used, a long time ago, to mean castle. So, in a very weird way, my surname translates into Castle, in English. James Castle 8)

Bottas is boots in Portuguese, like Puss in Boots which is such a wrong movie name incidentally.

By the way I'm not very excited because it looks like the pecking order stays as it was last year, no major changes really other than Perez getting his chance and Lewis having to fight a midfield car. I'll certainly be more up for it for 2014 when the unknowns willl be much greater.

Good post. There are lots of exciting things to find out how "Perez, Hamilton, Gutierrez, Grosjean, Hulkenberg, Bottas" will perform. There will be some really big pressure on Perez's shoulders to deliver, hopefully he will be able to get over that with successful races :up:

I also can't wait to see HAmilton/Rosberg battle. Rosberg is really fast driver and improved himself a lot. It won't be easy for Lewis to beat him.

For sure he is the man to beat but, I am not that sure that he thinks he can do nothing wrong. He makes mistakes like everbody else, the scary thing is that he has a big margin to improve yet, he's only 25.

He looks to me like a very down to earth guy and very mature for his age.

I doubt it, Sebastian seems to be quite mature and he knows that things don't always work his way... I wish him a 4th tho.... at the same I would be happy for a few other drivers....

I would have been happy for him last year, before he started to act like a stupid person on twitter

I really haven't followed much what happens at the winter tests. Last season took much of my interest away, IMO it was the worst season I've seen. Hopefully 2013 will be a better season and I get my interest back. But if it turns out to be another 2012, I'm afraid my interest will fade away completely.

Cant wait for the season to get here! lots of rookies this year, Lewis at Merc, can Vettel be a 4 time WDC?, and Being a Williams Fan really excited to see Bottas vs Pastor and hopeing Williams could fight with the Top teams.

No. I have no emotional investment in half the drivers on the grid. Most of the midfield and rear are pay drivers.

Even if it is interesting at the front the field will feel empty, like only 2/3 drivers deserve to be there.

I'm hoping Hulkenberg and Kimi run well and end the careers of their teammates. And Ricciardo carves up the depleted field to get an RBR drive in 2014.

Nothing as far as I know. However Rosberg is a Swedish name and directly translates to Rose Mountain. Nico on the other hand is short for Nicholas and the most famous Nicholas must be the saint who was the origin of santa. So it's Santa Claus Rose Mountain who Hamilton is driving the Mercedes with.

Don't be confused tho in germany the 'Weihnachtsmann' (which oddly enough translates to Santa Claus tho) is something else than the Nikolaus at least in germany there are 2 seperate days... 6th december is Nikolaus day and 24th of December is when the Weihnachtsmann or the Christkind comes

I doubt that. Vergne will probably beat him now that he's got a full season under his belt and snatch that Red Bull seat.
