I'm basing this on conglomerate times of each of the three testing weeks:

Pole Position goes to: FELIPE MASSA (fastest 1st test, fourth fastest in 3rd test)
Closely followed by NICO ROSBERG (fastest one week with sixth and eighth for the other weeks)

Second row: FERNANDO ALONSO and KIMI RAIKKONEN
Third row: SERGIO PEREZ and ROMAIN GROSJEAN
Fourth row: NICO HULKENBERG and ADRIAN SUTIL
Fifth row: SEBASTIAN VETTEL and LEWIS HAMILTON
Sixth row: JENSON BUTTON and ESTEBAN GUTIERREZ
Seventh row: JEAN-ERIC VERGNE and PASTOR MALDONADO
Eighth row: PAUL Di RESTA and VALTTERI BOTTAS

The rest fail to qualify (including Mark Webber who failed to record a top-10 time for each of the three testing weeks)!

Going out on a limb at the front but ... I dont think Ross is the kind to show his hand so fully so I am guessing there is still a bit in reserve over at Merc.

Where's that idiot that laughed because I predicted Hamilton and Rosberg might make the front row in Oz last week? Still laughing are you?? It might not be exactly correct what the outcome will be (as we all know!) but I think I might get a bit more respect now ;)

It's too early to get excited about Mercedes's competitiveness

People will or will not be laughing at the end of the season. I remember last year the qualifying for Australian Grand Prix. Yes, in Q2 Rosberg and Schumacher were 1st and 2nd! And I was thinking - wow, is Mercedes so good they are going to fight for the title? Meanwhile Alonso was out in Q2 and Vettel somewhere around 5th. In the end the latter two fought for the title.

After China last year I was under the impression McLaren would have a year long battle with Mercedes.

Most important part of F1 is staying competitive.

Well it's always stupid to believe that your prediction will be right but you have to put people somewhere and it it's a points competition like guess the grid if you get it reasonably right more than anyone else you win even if you are a couple out or one out in each position. So since it's just a prediction someone has to be chosen for pole so why just go off last years form? I'd rather follow driver form and a bit of form from testing hence why I think it is more likely than any other outcome that Hamilton will be on pole or at least right up there. This is what I thought long before this weeks testing. Vettel could be anything from 1st to 10th so could Alonso so could Massa, Button, Perez et al but I'm sure Hamilton will be very high up and Rosberg is very very good over one lap as a driver also.

We don't know driver form atm, all we can do is base it off last years. And basing EVERYTHING off this years testing is not very smart. Last years cars are still the benchmark to compare cars and Mercedes was well behind the pace of the leaders, I do believe they have improved but I think they've only matched Lotus in pace for now.

I hate to say it but the Bull is without a doubt still the best.

Two weeks away but forecast (yes it will change) currently stands at high of 23oC not the high temperatures you sometimes get in Melbourne.

I base my predictions off all the information I have digested that is available from 1984-2013 not just this years testing, I don't remember saying that I did that either.

1. Hamilton---If the merc is as good as it currently looks expect a bagful of poles from LH this year.

2. Alonso---The prancing horse is looking awesome this year!

3. Rosberg---A match for LH, espercially in 1-lap pace.

4. Massa---Who knows which brazilian will turn up this year?

5. Webber---Stolid aussie, always flatters to deceive at the beginning of the year.

6. Vettel--when the car is not quite there as seems to be the case, SV does tend to concentrate on the race.

7. Button--Not a great qualifier except the car is awesomely above the others. Not the case this year, it seems

8. Grosjean---A quick roadster, should be faster than his teammate in quali this year. With less mistakes & more race-pace who knows how the intra-team battle will turn out?

9. Perez---An unknown quantity.

10. Raikkonen---Was steady least year. Hope he can be spectacular this year. However, the car has underwhelmed thus far.

11. Maldonado---Fast but accident prone.

12. Hulkenberg---Deserves a better car

13. Sutil--wellcome back!

A Toro Rosso 2 tenths behind a Marussia? No offence to the fans or employees of Marussia but unless something goes horribly wrong there's no way thats going to happen!

He should have emphasised that his analysis was more classical (an analysis simply of the data in front of him) than bayesian (using prior beliefs to come to your conclusion, like we all do in this thread, e.g. Marussia are a minnow)

I imagine he doesn't actually think Marussia>TR but he wrote the article a bit like his mock grid was his best guess...

I never said that other teams would necessarily be caught off guard, although it does happen (Ferrari 2011). I was just asking if he thought it was impossible for the Merc to be a WDC & WCC contender, which he seemed to find ridiculous.
