 So the TV coverage wouldn't be able to include anything to do with Marussia? How are they going to show the start?!

Didn't something similar happen to Force India at the Bahrain Grand Prix? Might be wrong about that.

As for the Marussia situation, it is confusing to see this but there is still another week to sort this out.

Asked by ESPN whether the lack of provisions for images of the Marussia car and driver to be broadcast on television is a crucial missing element for Marussia just a week before opening practice in Australia, team boss John Booth answered: "No."

"It's vital for Bernie because he won't be able to film us without it."

Strong words there John.

No worries for Marussia at scrutiny then...

They're "very close" to signing something, and there's over a week yet, so.... won't be an issue.

Im sure the sponsors would love them to be invisible!. F1 can go a whole year without showing Marussia and while ridiculous there wouldn't be harm really. Marussia on the other hand would go broke within 2/3 races. So even saying it in jest is pretty out of this world let alone calling it "vital" for Bernie and using it to get a better deal.

you wouldn't be able to broadcast 1 race without showing a glimpse of the car -> or they'll sue the heck out of you.
Can't even show the start without Marussia agreeing...so they hold the power here

It would be impossible for Bernie to not sign with them. Imagine the outcry if we missed an amazing overtake for the lead on the final lap of the race, just because the leaders were lapping a Marussia at that very moment.

I remember that, I thought it was rumoured to be because Vijay Mallya had fallen out with Bernie and Bernie punished him by barely showing his cars on track. Martin Brundle mentioned it during commentary.

Yes, I think it did happen to FI but for a different reason. They skipped FP2 to get away from the circuit safely, and FOM seemed to be annoyed about that and studiously avoided filming their cars for the rest of the weekend as a kind of punishment. That's what it seemed like anyway.

It's stuff like this that is the scourge of F1. Either agree a deal well in advance of the start of the season, or don't let them race. And if you don't let them race, then on your head be it, because no teams = no F1.

Hm, I thought it was because their convoy got firebombed.

Anyways this is just stupid. Marussia is obviously trying to negotiate a better deal with what ever leverage they can find, which honestly isn't much if you think about it.

Rofl, imagine FOM having to blur out the Marussia car every time it accidentally pops on screen.

Close. The issue was that FI hit panic mode with some personnel leaving the scene and the team went public about their concerns, which was a big hit on the "all is fine" story that was being vented at the time.

edit: Then it was a full fledged damage control operation. Normal Armed Convoys with multiple checkpoints, Bernie who wasn't supposed to be there showing up on race day as if he had been there all weekend, Jean strolling around the grid, drivers clearly inside their bubbles and a minister exchanging arguments with Rubens Barrichelo via press.

most of the other 'sponsors' are in-fact financial institutions, most likely the companies that are supplying the cash to the team.

Of course, but as far as I remember a lot of people from the press picked up on it and during the following days/ weeks Force India got more media attention than ever before.
In the end the reputation of FOM suffered more than the 'punished' team. :)

By the way, how many minutes per race are the Marussia-cars usually shown? At the beginning of the race and when the leading cars overtake them. So even under normal circumstances they don't get much screen time.

the problem with Force India was the contract that said if a team didnt contribute in a session , fom wont cover their cars in the remaining of the weekend

I think you miss the point, if they can't show Marussia cars at all they can't show the start or when front markers lap them, or if they're in the back of overtake shots.

The skid mark in the underpants of the sport blackmailing the money train... they might find they won't be offered a new contract to participate next season.

Why do you think Bernie decided to negotiate separately with each team? Because he's brimming over with the milk of human kindness?

Not from Marussia's side though. They're negotiating claiming Bernie can't really televise his series without them.

Because there really isn't an easy way to show the race without a single glimpse at the Marussias. A lot of extra work to make sure at the start and first corners. So they're saying pay us more, not because we deserve it but because otherwise we'll make your life extremely difficult. A dick move. I guess extortion is a better word than blackmail.
And we're not talking simply having the Marussias vaguely in the background, they cannot appear at all.

Which is a shame as it was the whole point of the post.

How can you judge without knowing what Bernie's offered or what Marussia are asking for?

Bernie's said he only wants 10 teams, chances are he's offered them diddly.

Because Marussia really is in no position to be asking anything? The value they bring to Bernie is close to zero.

They work as hard as anybody else, why shouldn't they play the game and get what they can? Bernie defined the rules, and that's what they are: be hard, selfish and greedy. Get what you can, however you can, and good luck. He wanted them when there was the breakaway looming.

It makes no sense to be imposing a moral standard on a race team bargaining with Bernie Ecclestone.

True. And I'm pretty sure they'll pay the price for getting what they can, however they can.

I'm fed up to my back teeth of the poisonous dwarf to be honest, the way he's milking the show really gets up my nose to be honest. I hope Marussia really, really dick him to be frank. I'd also love BE to call their bluff and then see the cameras screw up.

Any odds on marussia not making the 107% Qual cut off, and NOT being granted an exemption as is normally the case? Either that or both cars fail scrutineering :rotfl:
