I just received word that Art Malone has died in Fla.:
This guy was one of the "bravest of the brave" Indy roadster drivers of the mid 60s. He drove NOVIs for Andy Granatelli at the Indianapolis Speedway and. also. was the first driver to break 180 MPH at the Daytona Intl. Speedway in 1961 driving a modified Indy roadster.
He also set many top fuel drag racing records.

GODSPEED RACER!!!

I never had the chance to interview Art personally about his spells with the Novi.
Fortunately my friend George Peters did.
But I had the fortune to meet Art in 2011 at the Speedway and that more than made up.

Rest in peace Art Malone.

Very sad news indeed, not been the best of weeks at all, has it?

Not many of his era left now, sadly. RIP, Art.

R I P Mr Malone and condolences to his family.

As to not being many left of his era , i beleive Chuck Weyant, Don Edmunds , Paul Goldsmith are now the last three to only compete in the Indy 500 exclusivily in Roadsters with Mr Malone's passing.

And is Bobby Unser now the last surviving NOVI driver that competed in the Indy 500?

Jim McElreath still around? I guess so since I think that his death should not have gone unnoticed.

About Art Malone, he was at Indy in 2011 and it took me some efforts to meet him and get his autograph in my personal copy of Novi Vol.2 But I got it done.
Hardly I was back at my boot on the memorabilia show and a friend of mine who is a skilled model car builder came by with a present for me: a 1:25 model of Art's 1963 car. The Hightail #75. I brought along my friend and the car to Art another time to show him the car and he was absolutely delighted with it, insisting to my friend to built hime one too if the opportunity arose.
We had a nice talk and Art then signed the bottom plate of the car for me.
Don't know if Art ever got his model, I hope so.

Henri ,

Yes Jim McElreath is still alive , so there's at least 2 NOVI drivers in the 500 still around (How could i forget the 3 Novi drivers from 1964 ??)

Also there was a thread created back around Indy 500's centential where you related the autograph story , but wasnt there also a pic there that showed a lot of the older drivesr in nice line up? As i recall Art Malone was 2nd from the left but i cant seem to find it as this moment.
