I'm thinking about last year's race as well.

His record at Barber isn't very good though, he averages about 13th.

Ah, fair enough!

Oh! My apologies. I thought you were talking about Indycar competition in general. Hinch's record at Barber isn't remarkably strong.

Bourdais was incredible at Barber last year. It's a shame Dragon don't seem to have a handle on car setup yet.

Could be a bit early to say, but who was the last Indycar rookie as strong as Vautier? Dixon? Tags? Danica?

Looks like AJA will be getting another race outing in the Indycars before the 500, apart from this race.

Allmendinger's a star -- I really hope this is a prelude to a full-time drive in the series.

Seems an awful long time since when he was the "Great White Hope" of US auto racing :well:

I guess not, but he did qualify 2nd last year and ran up front until the last stint. RHR was about 15th for most of it.

If we're counting just IRL, then Hinchcliffe (he got a few 4th places like Danica but was better on road courses overall). CCWS it would have to be Allmendinger, and before that Dixon in CART.

Without wishing to sound facetious, I'd say Pagenaud from last year :p

Edit: ...and on that note, I tip Pagenaud for a top 3 in qualifying!

Edit 2: Bourdais' drive last year at Barber I'd say was drive of the year. How he managed to pull that thing into the top 10 is beyond me.

Good shouts. Interesting how hard a time rookies have had making an impact on IRL, relative to CCWS/CART. Guess those ovals take a little longer to learn.

If anything, rookies have been good on ovals historically in both series but less so on road courses (Mansell's CART championship was won on the back of his oval wins\podiums early on). Which is odd given how many of them came from road racing backgrounds.

Edit: I'm not sure whether to put JPM or Zanardi ahead of Dixon, as they drove for the best team, but they did place higher so deserve a mention.

Greg Moore too. Nearly won his first Indycar race at Homestead, but he was a threat to win at three or four ovals that year. And Tags, and Montoya.

Whole world of difference between the amount of testing any of those names got, and what happens nowadays.

True, but we've had a rookie test at Texas already, and Indy will have the usual ROP.

Found this from wikipedia:

Sculpture

The infield of the track is has a number of large sculptures, including a series of large steel spiders and dragonflies, a pair of lions and a sisyphean figure pushing a boulder. HealthSouth Corporation, based in Birmingham donated its "Pulling the Wagon" statue to the park in 2009. The statue used to sit at the front of the HealthSouth's Corporate Headquarters on Highway 280. The statue served as symbol for HealthSouth's corporate slogan "Pulling the Wagon", which was created in 1984 under former founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Richard M. Scrushy. The statue was removed in March 2003 from HealthSouth Corporate Headquarters Campus. Today one of the statue's figures holds up a motorcycle.

Just for fun, a shuffle of the second half of the grid based on pure pace:

16) Kanaan
17) Rahal
18) Bourdais
