But you did that last year, isn't it? First there was a poll to choose only one driver. Then a few days or weeks later, you made a poll with option to vote for more than one driver.Yeah it would be interesting, and I thought about doing that, but in the end I decided it would all look a bit huge and daunting and cut down the number of voters.

I just came across a poll of the biggest Russian F1 website, which was made after the end of the 2012 season. About ten thousand fans voted.
Look at the results:
Teams:
Scuderia Ferrari 40.41%
Caterham F1 Team 26.33%
Vodafone McLaren Mercedes 23.54%
Lotus F1 Team 17.83%
Red Bull Racing 16.91%
Mercedes AMG Petronas 12.90%
Marussia F1 Team 9.02%
Sauber F1 Team 8.04%
Williams F1 Team 4.87%
Others < 4%
Drivers:
Petrov 41.41%
Alonso 40.65%
Kimi 36.45%
Schumi 30.39%
Button 21.73%
Massa 18.00%
Vettel 17.36%
Hamilton 16.70%
Webber 7.91%
Kamui 7.84%
Perez 7.50%
Others < 4%
As you see, in 2012, Hamilton was even less popular than Vettel. Massa was more popular than both of them thanks to Ferrari fans. As it is obvious from the poll, Ferrari's popularity=Alonso's popularity, and Red Bull's=Vettel's. So a lot of the driver's popularity depends on the popularity of his team. If Alonso and Vettel swap teams, Alonso wouldn't have 40% of support, just as Vettel wouldn't have only 17%. Before coming to Ferrari, Alonso used to be one of the most hated drivers.
Of course, there are popular drivers such as Kimi whose popularity has nothing to do with the team. But Kimi has always been popular, no matter the team. There's also Schumi, but Schumi is a legend who still got a lot of his old fans around, and I think quite a bit of Ferrari fans voted for him.

Fair enough, I just find it difficult to believe that Ferrari is only the 5th most popular team in F1 overall, not that it really matters to me, though.
Out of the top 5 teams, Ferrari, Red Bull and Mercedes are household names. Though Red Bull is popular because of their energy drinks, no one outside of F1 knows the racing team.
McLaren and Lotus are not household names, only great car enthusiasts or F1 fans know them.
It's a pretty surprising result I agree. I suppose F1 is changing from the days when it was basically two teams, Ferrari vs McLaren or Williams or Benetton. Also although there's a lot of inertia it's not the same when the original great racer goes, and now Ferrari doesn't represent Enzo but rather Fiat, the politician Monty, Philip Morris and so on. Same with the other teams after Ron and Tyrrell. Why should we really care about the teams, these days? Mercedes-Benz or a drinks company or Genii Capital...
So I think it's natural if we focus more and more on the drivers, and Nando is a bit out of favour it seems. I can only guess because after all the hype last year he didn't win and was suddenly matched by Massa.

Yeah hordes of disappointed Vettel fans kept claiming their boy was lots of Kimi fans' second favourite, so I tested that with the second poll in this format, and OMG they were right .But you did that last year, isn't it? First there was a poll to choose only one driver. Then a few days or weeks later, you made a poll with option to vote for more than one driver.
Well someone can do a Favourites poll now?
edit: I still think cramming 3 polls into one thread would be a bit much, and not easy to get everyone to suss out the difference between two driver polls together.

Ferrari is the most popular F1 team, and Alonso, as Ferrari's #1 driver, is one of the most popular drivers.

Interesting but you have to qualify this by saying "popular in Russia".

Maybe, but I think it gives a more accurate picture, since Russian fans are more unbiased towards top drivers and top teams than we are. Nationality matters. Petrov's popularity says it all, really. Lewis is very popular on English-speaking boards, but as we see, that is not really the case for some other countries.Interesting but you have to qualify this by saying "popular in Russia".

Unbiased? Lol. The poll is stupidly nationalistic, with Petrov and Caterham , what does that tell us? And Massa more popular than Hamilton tells us more about Russians than F1 I do suspect...
At least on here a Finn and a German are up there with the Brit - it's a racing fans' poll. Sorry but your poll is strictly Russian. Find some others then let's talk.

I'm saying the same thing: that nationality matters, and that's why Petrov is so popular on that poll. But it's unbiased towards the top drivers, since none of them are Russian(and we can't really say the same thing about English-speaking forums, where there are a lot of British fans.)Unbiased? Lol. The poll is stupidly nationalistic, with Petrov and Caterham , what does that tell us?
There's nothing strange about it. Massa's popularity has to do with Ferrari's popularity--as is Alonso's. Ferrari is immensely popular worldwide. And Massa more popular than Hamilton tells us more about Russians than F1 I do suspect...
In that poll a German, a Finn and a Spanish driver are almost as popular as the Russian, so it's a racing fans' poll, too.;)At least on here a Finn and a German are up there with the Brit - it's a racing fans' poll. Sorry but your poll is strictly Russian. Find some others then let's talk.
Granted, this season, Alonso's popularity seems to have decreased a lot, and Vettel's seems to have increased.

Using Twitter to see who is more popular doesn't work. I follow all the teams and drivers and teams that are on Twitter even though I obviously don't like them all.

This poll is meaningless in terms of overall support as the sample size is tiny. The Russian poll is more representative as there were about 50 times more respondents. Do the global F1 fan surveys ask for favourite drivers and teams?

It's quite surprising that Marussia is not more popular. I wonder what a poll taken this year would look like, now that Petrov is no longer competing?

That's a sample of Russians, there's a lot more to sampling than sample size. It could be 10 million votes and it would still just be a sample of one nation. It's representative of Russian fans, at best.
As it is whoever this forum represents it's a more global population than that, and tho it is a small sample size the general trends have been stable from quite small numbers. If we get another 100 votes it won't change much.

For me I support Hamilton & Di Resta. I was a McLaren fan but the whole debacle over Hamilton signing and the subsequent mess they have made of the car (again!) means I have given up on them. So I am now supporting Merc.
If the poll had been who do you like I would have added Rosberg, Webber & Kimi. Seriously, how could anyone not like Kimi after his various radio messages last year
I also have huge respect for Alonso. I was listening to a discussion on Sky's F1 show about Alonso continuing to live in Spain and pay his full rate of tax because the country needs it. I have gone from actively disliking him a few years back to really admiring him.
As for teams I like Force India, Lotus and Williams.
However, I would go as far as to say I "support" any of them.

The only driver I support is Danica Patrick. Drivers I like are Kyle Busch, Brad Keselowski, Regan Smith, Sam Hornish Jr., Tony Stewart, Kevin Harvick,Travis Pastrana, Kyle Larson, Helio Castroneves, Marco Andretti, James Hinchcliffe, Dario Franchitti, Scott Dixon, Tony Kanaan, Simona De Silvestro, Josef Newgarden, Ryan Briscoe.
Teams I like are Stewart Haas Racing, JR Motorsports, Andretti Autosport, Penske Racing

It is a Russian sample, so what? Since Russia has no top drivers, hasn't had one in the past either, their fans can still be expected to be neutral with respect to other top drivers. If it is German or Italian sample, I can understand the problem. In that Russian poll, you can easily set aside Petrov and his team votes and get a good picture of others.
because there is always bias within a nation.
taking out Petrov doesnt change that.
A poll from just russia only represents russians.
for example russians may dislike germans more than americans do, and that can influence the voters.
maybe russians dislike the "win at all costs" mentality of some drivers while americans admire their determination...
just two examples, there is much much more.
culture/nations do play a role in the decision making, even if they dont have one of their own to cheer for.

This site's biased in general may have something to do with that.
The # of twitter followers gives us a much better perceptive of who is followed the most worldwide.
1. Scuderia Ferrari
499,427 followers
2. McLaren F1
345,125 followers
3. Red Bull Racing
269,947 followers
4. Mercedes AMG Petronas
243,941 followers
5. Lotus F1 Team
221,539 followers
Ferrari are still the most supported team from a global view.
What about for drivers

The thing with autosport is that is not truly global. Brazil/Latin america has a huge population of f1 followers and most of those people are not represented in here.I agree to certain extent with what you are saying about Ferrari. But I don't feel the same way about Alonso. Why would Alonso have exclusive followers as opposed to say, Hamilton?
Even about Ferrari, I can understand the tifosi not supporting other teams. But other fans may still like Ferrari.
Some drivers themselves don't have a twitter account. Sorry, twitter following can't be that accurate. The Autosport forum is one of the more sensible forum and a well-moderated one. It is a class above anything I have seen so far. I don't think it can be just dismissed as being biased. This is a fair representation of a good section of serious F1 fans.

Supporting him since he replaced Hakkinen at McLaren back in 2002.
Hamilton
Couldn't stand the guy in 2007 and 2008, but after his bad year in 2009 he changed and I've liked him a lot more since then. Great agressive driver on track.
Sutil
Not really a fan, but always like to see him do well. And the Force India team is a nice team as well.
McLaren
Have always liked them, because Hakkinen and Raikkonen drove there. And they were the greatest competitor of Ferrari, the team I disliked when Schumacher was winning everything with them/

Just incase we have any hairdressers here, Im not picking on you.
A website for actors or solicitors is also likely to poll Ferrari highest, its only on racing and petrol head sites that the Mclarens etc might be higher

Ferrari, Lotus, Williams, Force India, and, reluctantly, McLaren - many of my favourite drivers (Senna, Coulthard, Hakkinen and the people above) have been with them but I just can't get excited about them, I call this the Ron effect. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that these teams, in their various previous guises, were the big five in the 1990s when I first got into F1.
