it would be a good idea to correlate that data with poster's nationality .

Well we can surmise that Schumi's departure has added some votes to Vettel perhaps, but he obviously came out of Sepang much better than Webber which has surprised me. Generally nationalism seems quite well contained doesn't it? Being German hasn't helped Sutil, nor being British di Resta. There aren't that many Finns to start with so we seriously like Kimi, and wdc's.

ISTR we did a nationality poll last year, if you feel like digging it out. About 50% Brits I think.

Here is the rank order, and the percentage of voters who've supported each driver (245 voters):

Raikkonen 47%
Hamilton 31%
Vettel 29%
Alonso 23%
Button 21%
Hulkenberg 21%
Massa 17%
Rosberg 17%
Bottas 17%
Webber 14%
Perez 12%
Grosjean 9%
Sutil 9%
di Resta 7%
Ricciardo 7%
van der Garde, Bianchi or Chilton (say which) 7%
Maldonado 5%
Vergne 5%
Pic 3%
Gutierez 2%

The top 5 are all our WDC's. Hulk and Bottas are noticeably popular. Di Resta and you might think Webber aren't that popular.

Look how close Massa is to Alonso. Who would have predicted that, only a 6% difference?!

It is more like some drivers need national votes to up their numbers. Given that this is an English-medium forum, the poll is headed by a Finn with an English driver pushed to second. Then a German driver is third.

I am still waiting to hear from you which other forums are more global than Autosport forum.

Why would Seb's stock increase after Malasyia?I find it kinda wierd,is it a case of controversy sells?
also suprised alonso is in 4th,with him being the favourite to stop the RBR domination I thought he would be better supported.

Even as Vettel fan, I'm surprised. Maybe the media blew it out of proportion and Vettel got some supporters because of that. Or people simply don't care that much about it a few weeks later.

I can only think this board loves racers and winners, and Sebi certainly outraced Webbo in the big duel in Malaysia - Webbo even let him pass round the outside instead of shoving him off which, frankly, did look a bit weak.

Also Vettel has been driving really, really well this year with some great passing. Personally I was severely alienated by the 'get him out of the way' and the rest of it with the dissembling and then arrogance but evidently others feel differently. Mind you I was already alienated lol.

Nando I can only think people have noticed his drop in form with respect to Massa, and especially at the end of last year when it came to crunch time.

I think this board is sometimes short-term in its ratings but otherwise it is quite acute.

Lewis needs a win or two I suspect, while Maldonado's honeymoon is totally over.

You keep saying this every chance you get. I guess the fact that Alonso was considered the driver of 2012 by the Team Principals was just the people in the paddock not understanding the sport like you do.

Oh dear. I can only apologise. What is your explanation for his support being barely above Button's?

There is nothing to suggest that the Malaysia incident had anything to do with Vettel's popularity. The last such reference poll was taken in June or July last year. There has been lot of time since then, not just Malaysia.

I don't find the need to explain it and I certainly don't need to make up theories for a fan poll on a forum.

You find the need to object to possible explanations tho, I can't help noticing. Is that every possible explanation, or are there some that you could accept?

Bearing in mind the fact of his rating...

I would say is a combination of things..
1. There are a lof of loyal mclaren fans on this board.. When Lewis left, they ended up supporting Button whereas last year those votes probably went to Lewis. If you can dig up the old thread you can see that Lewis had more votes in comparison to Vettel for example.

2. Vettel gaining more support which is understandable as he became a 3 time WDC.

3. The kimi factor, combined with less support for ferrari on this forum.

But it's a free vote and people can cast as many votes as they want - they could vote Button/Hamilton/Raikkonen AND Alonso.

But Alonso's support has dropped from 42% of voters (121/290) to 23% since August last year.

So I reckon it's about form and his support will come back. We can see that Massa's support is up atm (from 6% to 17%), so with a few more weekends of Nando outqualifying and outracing Felipe I think Nando's support will come back. There was too much hype last year to sustain, really, it didn't allow for anything but perfection.

that's right.. I forgot about the free vote option. I guess "you are good as the last race" holds true.
although I see a conflict with some of the voters supporting both Alonso and Kimi or Lewis and Alonso..

Well I support Lewis and Kimi and Nando :)

They are all stunningly fast, fair, and extraordinary each in their own way.

I think that once upon the time, Ferrari was seen as the underdog, the small company that fought against rather faceless giants. They had a racing soul. They kept it up for a long time by the rather excentric Enzo Ferrari and I think Gilles Villenueve did a lot to keep that image alive into modern times. Then came the cold era. Schumi and Todt did not do much for the emtions, you had to either love Ferrari or simply love winners for your heart to be with the red team. For quite a while now Ferrari have been the giant with more resources and more support from Bernie and FiA than any other team. Situation reversed.

Maybe they think they are invincible, that people will love them whatever they do. I think it is not so. The "Fernando. Is. Faster. Than. You" was a late reminder that nothing has changed since Todt, and Schumi, left. Kimi, who is obviously very popular, not only on this board, was, at least for a distant spectator, treated badly. Massa is the new Rubens and not many believes he will ever get a chance to fight Alonso for a win.

In many ways I understand Ferrari, they need to win, both races and championships, and they focus on maximizing those chanses. It is the smart thing to do. But the smart does not come from the heart. There is no love in smart.

But Ferrari fans should not dispair, there is forums specially for tifosi that is almost as big as this one, maybe even bigger, and a poll there would give a different result. There is probably quite a few Autosport forumers, Ferrari supporters, that has started to feel cold in here and moved elsewhere, to rooms frequented by people who share their love. For each one that jump this ship, it will be a bit colder for the ones left behind.

Touched by some of the fan comments, we all inhabit a slightly different place.
Voted for Kimi, Lewis, Fernando & Mark, racers through and through who respond to the feel of the car when it steps out on them.
Nice thread by the way and GOD DAMN at last it's an F1 race week-end

Former drivers/teams:
- M. Schumacher, Barrichello, Verstappen, Salo, Heidfeld, Sato, Kobayashi (plus drivers who drove for the teams I supported)
- Tyrrell, Arrows, Minardi, BMW Sauber, HRT

Current drivers/teams:
- Alonso, Hulkenberg, Bianchi (plus same caveat as above)
- Ferrari, Sauber

Although I first and foremost consider myself a fan of the whole sport and good racing. :D

They kept it up for a long time by the rather excentric Enzo Ferrari and I think Gilles Villenueve did a lot to keep that image alive into modern times. Then came the cold era. (yes, perhaps it was a cold era for some, while for others it was an exhiliratingly dominant era) Schumi and Todt did not do much for the emtions, (unlike Dennis, or Williams, or Marko, or Horner, etc...right? :) ) you had to either love Ferrari or simply love winners for your heart to be with the red team. (no disagreement on this one) For quite a while now Ferrari have been the giant with more resources and more support from Bernie (for reference, check out the salaries of your favourite soccer/football/hockey/WWF etc. team, and see if the best, most popular player's salary is eaual to, below, or above average) and FiA ( disagree with you on this one too, as a Ferrari fan, I am still pissed at how FIA went to great lengths to put a stop to Ferrari's dominance in the latter Brawn years ) than any other team. Situation reversed.

Maybe they think they are invincible, that people will love them whatever they do. I think it is not so. (good chance that most Ferrari bashers agree with you on this) The "Fernando. Is. Faster. Than. You" was a late reminder that nothing has changed since Todt, and Schumi, left. (a lot has changed since Todt left, LDM replaced highly capable professional people with amateurs, and the results prove it) Kimi, who is obviously very popular, not only on this board, was, at least for a distant spectator, treated badly. Massa is the new Rubens and not many believes he will ever get a chance to fight Alonso for a win. (Massa should thank his lucky stars to have a job in F1, let alone Ferrari - should have been replaced a long time ago)

In many ways I understand Ferrari, they need to win, both races and championships, and they focus on maximizing those chanses. It is the smart thing to do. But the smart does not come from the heart. There is no love in smart. (Are you saying that other teams do not need to, or wish to win? Additionally, how would you characterize someone who is unethical, flips the finger at team orders, his entire team, and teammate - is that smart or is it love? ... careful cause that's a trick question)

But Ferrari fans should not dispair (there is absolutely no despair - despair was the 80s and 90s) , there is forums specially for tifosi that is almost as big as this one, maybe even bigger, and a poll there would give a different result. There is probably quite a few Autosport forumers, Ferrari supporters, that has started to feel cold in here and moved elsewhere, to rooms frequented by people who share their love. For each one that jump this ship, it will be a bit colder for the ones left behind. (Your magnanimity and concerncare really appreciated, but we'll hold up our own..)

and one last comment if you don't mind- what's your point?

Regards

Maybe it's just been a case of 'silent majority' all along. Used to feel he didn't have too many fans around here, but it seems I'm dead wrong on that one.

You made my point with red ink.

EDIT: To be more specific, you are saying that Ferrari is not worse than anyone else. That is probably true, but are they not supposed to be more than that? When they are just like any other team, then you might just as well support any other team.

Drivers: Raikkonen, Vettel, Bottas & Hulkenberg
Teams: Sauber I guess, I don't really have a favourite team ATM

Former
KUBICA, he was my favourite driver hands down.

This is purely anecdotal but from what I've seen among F1 fans where I live (North America) is that almost no males support Vettel/Red Bull. There are many guys who are die-hard supporters of Alonso/Hamilton/Raikkonen/Schumacher but they seem to have a general dislike for Seb :p.

Crofys views on who's the most popular driver, as mentioned on Sky this morning.

"Everywhere we go around the world there are so many that want to see that man (Kimi) win, a few want to see Sebastian Vettel win, and they get their wish more often than not, but i tell you, the Raikkonen fans that you come across, from Finland, from Britain, from Spain, from everywhere, I'd say he's probably the most universally popular amongst Formula 1 fans at the moment, you can't move for honorary Finns when he's about."

I have said this before as well. Raikkonen seems to have more international fans compared to Alonso and Hamilton. Granted the latter two have fervent following in their home countries, but Raikkonen gets that edge back from international fans.
