The playground of the German Marques kicks-off again at Hockenheim this weekend, with a ten round calendar:

1 Hockenheimring - 5 May
2 Brands Hatch - 19 May
3 Red Bull Ring - 2 June
4 EuroSpeedway Lausitz - 16 June
5 Norisring, Nuremberg - 14 July
6 Moscow Raceway - 4 August
7 Nürburgring - 18 August
8 Motorsport Arena Oschersleben - 15 September
9 Zandvoort - 29 September
10 Hockenheimring - 20 October

So no more Spain, instead a trip out to Moscow and the Dutch round gets pushed later in the year after some reshuffling to avoid a German F1 date clash.

On the team/driver side, BMW up their entry to eight drivers, while Mercedes drop down to six, but do lose a lot of their dead weight, with Coulthard, Schumacher and Wolff also moving on. Rahel Frey also leaving the series to drive for Audi's GT team, so no female drivers at all this season. Jamie Green joins Audi in the only inter-marque transfer this season and putting a British driver in every marque for 2013.

All the new faces this season come from the world of open-wheelers, with Timo Glock the most publicised - moving (up?) from Marussia F1 to race for BMW along with test driver and former F3 racer Marco Wittmann, while F3 Euroseries drivers Daniel Juncadella and Pascal Wehrlein move to Mercedes - Wehrlein being a late replacement for Ralf Schumacher who only announced his retirement early this year, meaning that Pascal had already committed to race at the first European F3 race at Monza.

New rules for 2013 include the inevitable soft tyre compound move and rather less welcome, the addition of a DRS system using the rear wing with the same proximity rules as F1.

Going forwards, a DTM series in the US has been announced, along with moves to tie in with the Japanese Super GT series and a change from the current V8 engines, to 2 litre turbos in 2015 or 2016, more will be announced shortly no doubt.

Is Spengler so bland that he *never, ever* gets any mention?

I've sort of tried to follow his career but, win or lose, his only presence is on the time sheets (usually near the top). :confused:

The site talks about the "English Channel broadcasting the livestream of the race outside Germany"

Im deutschen YouTube-Channel bietet die DTM alle Rennen on Demand, Vorberichte und Zusammenfassungen vom Qualifying. Besonderes Highlight sind spezielle Onboard-Einstellungen direkt aus den DTM-Boliden oder Top-10-Compilations, die die Fans selbst über Facebook beeinflussen können. Beispielsweise werden einmal pro Woche die besten Überholmanöver, die besten Rennen oder die unglücklichsten Pannen gezeigt. they can use it whereever if I understood the info video right if they are 2 sec behind the car infront of them when passing the start finish line

I assume cause Sachsenring is more a bike track.... I wished F1 would race there.... cause its so close to me :o

He's essentially a French driver using a Canadian license who manages to find his decent single seater career land him in on the factory team in DTM. I think before he won the title I thought he should at least have gotten a serious look by McLaren or Mercedes when looking to hire a driver. But he seemed to fit in the same spot as Paffett. A great driver who just didn't impress the F1 community enough to get a ride. Shame for F1, but a great addition for DTM and touring car racing. If he wins another title in the series I wonder if he'll make the move to DTM-America when/if the series starts?

He didn't win the title soon enough (di Resta did) as far as I can tell.

I wasn't really thinking of an F1 career, although I'd have liked to see him get the "courtesy" test-drive when he drove for Mercedes... I can understand him not being *that* interesting a driver for an F1 seat as he doesn't gather much interest in american (well, Canuck) press anyway (unlike JV, Montoya, Speed, ...)

I'm just puzzled by the fact that the only mentions of him I'd see are time-sheets or quotes-from-the-podium (when he's on). He features at same level as an also-ran in year's reviews (even when he's champ or challenger), etc. So I figured either he's pissed some people «JVilleneuve style», or he's didn't piss enough (ie, "bland").

Not that it matters much, I was just a bit curious.

How many DTM driver's really get much press though? Maybe the German's as it's a German series, and Paffett (from his Mercedes-McLaren connection), but in general, I don't see much in the media about DTM driver's overall.

Interesting race. Kinda tuned out a bit early on when Wickens suffered from a stuck throttle and retired. Lucky pit sequences gave Wehrlein a really good mid-race run. Only 18 and led a good portion of his debut DTM race. Seems like the option tire isn't as big of a difference as seen in F1, and the announcers had issue telling to two apart, but I assume that will change over the course of the season. The DRS worked well to. Providing drivers the ability to position to overtake going into the hairpin, and in some cases, drivers got it wrong and overshot the apex. Silly watching the wing drop though.

Didn't know the series had paddle shifters either. It's the move of even road cars, but a bit of a shame.

Vettel actually looks like a man there!

I enjoyed the race and have to thank DTM very much for putting it up on Youtube. Quality is great as well.

I think DRS is a big success. You could see that as soon as they disallowed it for the last 3 laps, all overtaking stopped. That lack of overtaking is why I stopped watching this series before. Changes I would make:

- 2 seconds in front is too much and allows for long trains of DRS users and benefits those not even really in with a shout of a pass. It should be an overtaking aid, not a 'if you're somewhat behind' pace aid.

- Allow DRS to the end. I dont really understand why they dont allow it for the last 3 laps. Surely it just makes for a less climactic ending?

The safety car really mixed things up and made it hard to tell how the tire situation would play out normally. Options lasted quite a while, which means ideal strategy would probably be two medium length stints on the softs and a short one on the hards. No point in having long-lasting tires that are much slower when you have to make 2 pitstops.

Penalty for Paffet. He falls down to sixth position. Podium is, therefore, for Wickens.

You're wrong. There were waved yellows.

But yes, it looked strange.
I almost thought they didn't let the SC out because it looked like Farfus stopped deliberately where he did for team-tactical reasons - to get the SC on track.
His car was already in big trouble at least half a lap before he stopped and it would have logical if he entered the pits at the end of that lap. A SC would have brought Spengler right behind Rockenfeller.

The team told German TV that they had ordered Farfus to drive into the pits but that Augusto also lost the radio in the whole mess and didn't hear it.
What I don't know is why Farfus didn't thought it was pitting what he had to do.

Edit: Autosport story advises it was for not slowing sufficiently under yellow flags.

There is a new rule this year: in case of a yellow flag, drivers must be at least half a second slower than in the previous lap in that sector, if not, you get a 5 second penalty.

Paffet told German TV he had stepped into the brakes, but it seems it wasn't enough to lose the half a second. What I don't know is if the reason was that he was too slow the previous lap or that he didn't really slowed down that much.

That rule about you must slow down 1 second is so artificial, its the sort of crap rule/variable that has crept down from F1 (DRS, Option Tyres, Mandatory stops, Soft driving penalties) into other series (only this is one of the few not from F1)
He didn't slow down, give him the warning flag, then disqualify him... simple process surely? Sod screwing the results afterwards.

Very confused wasn't he? But then wouldn't you if you're already doing post race interviews when you're informed that you have been moved up to the podium and need to race across pit lane?
