I posted this under the cutaways thread of the Nostalgia forum but as some of you may not go there and Tony is a big contributor here I think its worthy of this repost:-

Many of you cutaway drawing addicts will have seen, and marvelled at, Tony Matthews exquisite drawings posted here. On May 1st the 750 MC Hertfordshire Centre had a rare opportunity to have Tony as our guest at one of our regular competition car nights near junction 22 of the M25.

Tony gave us over two hours of his time telling of his career as a technical illustrator, starting with his apprenticeship to James Allington and ending by showing us my own favourite amongst his work, the Aston Martin sportscar cutaway.

Not only did Tony show us many of his original drawings on the 20 inch by 30 inch boards but he explained some of the techniques used to create the artwork which is a fascinating topic in its own right. Some engineers would tell Tony " its all just metal colour" but when you see his Ferrari F300 gearbox cutaway up close you can see how an illustrator uses shades to bring out all the fine detail.

His drawings have always looked great in print and on here but, at risk of making you all jealous, to see the originals and study the incredible detail " live" as it were is something else.

So I'm taking this opportunity to thank Tony for coming to our meetings and sharing his life's work with us.

Hi Tony,

I'll be in the UK for Formula Student in July, but it's a flying visit.
I fly in on Tuesday 2nd and spend the night in London, then drive up to Northampton on Wednesday, perhaps I can detour along the way if you are around and about.

Tony invited me over a drink once after a race weekend in the UK. Even let me stay over. Bit weird that I had to sleep in the bathtub though. And I don't understand why he filled it with ice during the night.

Tony, back to your talk if I may quote you in public!

I think recall you mentioning that a guy called Micheal Mumford sat behind you in school ( mat, mum etc.). There is a clever rear axle location system called the "Mumford link" used by Mallock U2 cars.

The name quoted of the inventor is Micheal Mumford! - Is it your ex schoolmate ?

Unfortunately no, mariner, it was Richard Mumford, a now-retired programmer. We shared a love of explosives and aeromdelling, and he still flies RC flying wings and organizes his local annual firework display.

Explosives you say.....we could have used you in Vietnam for blowing tree stumps....ever work with C4?

C4 was a bit too advanced for 15/16 year olds, but we got as far as nitrocellulose. The problem with that was having to boil it in water for 50 hours to stabilize it. None of us had parents who, knowingly or unknowingly, we could take advantage of, and who had garages or kitchens where we could set up a system to boil anything for that length of time. We were lucky to get away with storing explosive devices weighing 25lbs next to a friend's father's company Rover saloon car. If one of those Marrows (code name) had gone off, the company car would have gone up the Suwanee.

I know, right? I nearly blew up the entire neighborhood when I was 11 or 12 but there wasn't the widespread panic you would have today.

Sounds like a close call Bill....

I had a younger friend who was always playing with wires, batteries, fireworks etc....then he found some ordnance from the nearby Army base and sadly, ran out of luck and was killed

I've told the story before, won't bore the room with it again. 'Twas the old convert a big old diesel turbo into a jet engine gag. Would go through a bottle of LP gas in maybe 90 seconds. Unbelievably loud, like an airliner in your back yard.
