Okay, so here we have ex-drivers that are misunderstood. I totally get the first 3 options, but feel free to offer reasons for Senna and Irvine (especially those who suggested those two!).

As with the former poll, and actual incidents, anecdotes, etc. that shows how media portrays them in an exaggerated manner will be fantastic. And remember - this is not a driver A versus driver B topic!

None, I am afraid, except for the small hope of amusing/interesting discussions of what drivers do and what can be construed as misunderstood.

Except for amusement and entertainment, I fail to see any true benefit from posting on forums anyway. :p

There are a few drivers I stuggle to understand, mostly because of their accents - for sure.

They are racing drivers we will never see in a natural environment where they are free to be themselves, and this forum is full of people who treat F1 like a soap opera (and rightfully so). It's laughable to suggest we really understand more about any driver than his strengths and weaknesses on the circuit.

thats true all we know about drivers is impressions, we can write those down as our own opinion.... unless we get to know one of the drivers in real, and I really mean get to know and not just getting and autograph, NONE of us will be able to judge them fairly...

I mean from the impressions I got I really disliked Alonso particulary last year... however I can't say if he is not really a nice guy if you get to know him

Michael Schumacher - someone has stated it before, people confuse his will of having a private life with arrogance.

Mansell? People complain all the time that he was complaining... Maybe he was misunderstood as to why he needed to complain and get the message across?

Arnoux? Fell out in Renault, fell out in Ferrari, proceeded to hold up leaders as a lapped driver in a Ligier. He was misunderstood, there was some issue others couldn't understand?

Pironi? People blame him as responsible for Villeneuve's death. He defied team orders. He is misunderstood as to why he all did it like he did?

Alesi? Some people think he was a potential multiple WDC, others think he was just an overrated erratic and mercurial driver. Who was he? An emotional character, but did it really distract his driving or is it misunderstood?

Montoya? Another emotional character. Is said to be too hot-headed to win a title. Fell out with Williams, fell out with McLaren. Misunderstood?

Magnussen? Rated as a top talent by Jackie Stewart, but he didn't quit smoking to become a top athlete. Why he didn't, what was the issue - he was misunderstood?

Piquet Sr? Many people think he was a horrible nasty character. But maybe he was misunderstood and it was his own peculiar sense of humour that others didn't get?

Farina - I'm sure it wasn't his intention to kill Lehoux or Hartmann, just casualties of another time and different values. :|

The most misunderstood driver is Narain Karthikayan. Due to his heavy Indian accent sometimes I misunderstand what he's trying to say.
