So here we go, a time trial for GT5 that is a little bit shorter (if not massively) on laptime... and keeping it topical to the real racing world, I've decided on a special Le Mans event!

Circuit to use - Circuit de La Sarthe 2009 (the fixed time version)

Cars allowed: I've had a think about this, and have decided to have 3 classes of 2-3 cars each (and one special class), in the hope that in each class one finds a car suited to them.

Modern LMP 700pp
Peugeot 908 (both works and Oreca)
Audi R10
Pescarolo (both Peugeot and Judd powered)

Classic Group C NOW UNRESTRICTED
Sauber Mercedes C9
Mazda 787B
Jaguar XJR9

GT 650pp
Corvette C6 RM
Corvette C5R
Oreca Viper

Free choice 500pp
Choose any road car!

As with Jovanotti's 'Ring event, times will go by class and overall, so giantkilling is actively encouraged! Tyres are unrestricted, but driving aids allowed are restricted to ABS and TC. Grip must be set to real and tyre and fuel useage on.

Standings

Modern LMP
1. Crooky369 - Oreca Peugeot 908 - 3:23.333
2. Danardif1 - Peugeot 908 HDI - 3.24.778
3. Haydenfan - Oreca Peugeot 908 - 3:24.906
4. Baddog - Pescarolo - 3:25.778

Classic Group C

2. Crooky369 - Jaguar XJR9 - 3:18.714

GT
1. Crooky369 - Corvette C6 RM - 3:38.896
2. Jovanotti - Oreca Viper - 3.42.083
3. Danardif1 - Corvette C6 RM - 3.42.576

500PP
1. Danardif1 - Toyota GT86 - 4.12.293
2. Jovanotti - Honda NSX '02 - 4.12.488
3. DampMongoose - Honda NSX 02 - 4.14.392

After however long on Autosport I had never really noticed this forum... bit daft really as this sounds like just my cup of tea!!!

What do we do? Just post times as and when we are happy? Is there any time limit for submitting times?

Looking forward to it already

Yeah roadcars only for the 500pp... let's see how people handle the Porsche Curves without big downforce :)

Awesome

Question: Whats the quickest way of getting hold of one of these?

Modern LMP 700pp
Peugeot 908 (both works and Oreca)
Audi R10
Pescarolo (both Peugeot and Judd powered)

Classic Group C 680pp
Sauber Mercedes C9
Mazda 787B
Jaguar XJR9

CAn they be bought or have to be won?

When PS got stolen I lost my save game data and loads of (virtual thankfully) cash :(

The Mazda cam be won in one of the recent seasonal events... the others I'll have to look to find out.

Do the seasonal events, preferably those where you need to use fast cars - wins you other cars of similar class (I think I won the Mazda that way), plus it gives you loads of cash (up to 1 million+ per race). I made 20 millions in no time. And of course check the used cars dealership regularly (that's where I found the Sauber/Pescarolo/Audi).

There is a vintage car event (A Spec) for which the Jag is a prize. Cannot recall the one though. But like above, win the seasonal events and within a hour or two, you could buy the Audi and Peugeot (I prefer the 908. The Audi just doesn't feel right.).

Can we improve on our 1st posted time? Didn't follow the rules in the Nurburgring thread.

Ran the Peugeot w/ a best of 3:25.106. The second chicane on Mulsanne (Michelin Chicane) is always an issue and I lose a few tenths there every lap.

Are you running this in the arcade time trial section of the game? If so where do you turn on fuel and tyre wear? I ran 3min 32 first lap with the Sauber detuned to 680pp but I want to ensure I have the right game settings before posting meaningless times...

Yes. I believe you can turn it on when selecting the track (i.e. before it has loaded the track).

Thanks Jovanotti! I'll have a look...

Don't worry about the C9 laptime in that clip, a stock C9 has a PP of +/-730, the 680 limit in this thread I'd expect a low/mid20's to be decent.

I've heard from the more serious players online that the arcade mode racks up mileage in the cars but without gaining credit for something else in the GT Life mode or something like that... I think from a driving perspective they are the same in GT5, although I think on the first few GT games the arcade handling wasn't as realistic as in GT mode (although as my Mrs would point out I've been known to be wrong on a few occassions :p )

However, if everyone is using the arcade mode then I'll be doing that for mine too!

Had a quick go in the Sauber at lunchtime and ran 3:28.9 with a few wobbles ... however I'm gonna need to try some of the other classes because running the Sauber at about 60% power limit to come down to 680pp is struggling to see more than 210mph even on the stretch to Indianapolis with any meaningful downforce for the Porsche Curves, just haven't got the gearing at this power level!

I'll try and sit down for a while tonight and have a crack at the 500pp class, as my cars at that level will at least be running as quick as they can!

Good challenge

3:24.906 w/ the 908. Was pure luck as it was the first lap in about 4 or in which wasn't invalid due to my getting a bit too right in the second corner (just before the Dunlop bridge).

Seeing as my restrictions have maybe dulled some of the excitement of the Group C cars (my aim was to make them slower in overall laptime for accuracy)... would it be preferable for the entrants if I changed the PP restrictions of the Group C cars up to 750pp?

I would say that gearing is almost certainly the key setup point for Le Mans on GT5. When you find a sweet spot, you're faster on the straights, but also in the right power band for the Porsche Curves (just like the post-Karussell section on the Ring, I want to keep the car in one gear for as long as possible, right in the meaty part of the power band) and the other twistier bits.

It just makes everything better.

Have to say I'm impressed with that time in the Pescarolo as well, I haven't really found a setup I'm comfortable with for that car yet. The setup I'm currently running on it gives it quite a good front end, but too jittery a rear, and I haven't worked out a solution to it yet. The Peugeot is much more benign overall (though you still have to be pretty careful not to light up the rears coming out of slow bends... that Diesel torque takes me by surprise every time!), but the sharpness at the front is what I always want from a car...

Ran about 10 laps in the Audi before realizing I was using the R8 rather than the R10. Was shocked how easy a 3:21-3:22 lap was before the discovery.

Anyone have some tips on the 500pp car? Do I take a car near the limit and tune up (or over and detune from there)? Or do I take a car severely under the number and do everything need to reach the limit?

First session was a detuned, ballast added 5 laps in the M3 used for the ring challenge. 4 illegal laps and 5th lap (legal) was a 4m20.xx.

Another question: with tyre wear and fuel use on can you run the fuel down and pit for tyres without adding fuel? Will be quicker on an emtpty tank.;)

Yeah, definitely. When you pit it gives you the option of tire compound choice, and amount of fuel you want to replace.

My Audi S3 at 501 PP after my run did a 4:24.###. Could shave a few second off that, but at best with some more tuning a 4:20 would probably be the best with that car.

(Totally shameless plug for the vid of my 500PP lap).

UPDATE: In order to make it more enjoyable and challenging... I have removed the PP restriction on the Group C class. Unleash the beast!

First attempt at the 500pp in my Toyota GT86 gave me a 4.16.133... gonna shave some wing off now and replace it with power and see what happens!

4.12.293! All I did was take all the wing off and add 20bhp and I was away!

How random you chose the GT86 sans wing, I just tuned mine the same and did a 4:14.948 :) It's a great car for this challenge as it's quite a slippy design so didn't need so much power on the straights, the 1000kg weight makes mincemeat of the corners and it accelerates like a scolded cat. Think sub 4:10 is possible with 500pp.

PS is the Minolta Toyota allowed for Group C? Only comparable car I own.

Just noticed an all Oreca lineup for the racers can be used which is pretty cool.

I can't see anything about AT or MT so I'm hoping AT is allowed?

LMP (Peugeot 908 Oreca) : 3:23.333
GT (C6 RM '09) : 3:38.896
Group C* (Jaguar XJR 9 LM) : 3:18.714

*Found an old replay for this one so not sure it counts?

Nice pics, also in the Nürburgring thread

Improved to a 4:12.488 with the NSX. Also tried the Toyota, but wasn't quite as quick. I'm just in love with every single NSX in GT5

Plus a 3:42.083 in the GT class with the Viper.

Wow - I suck :( . Just picked up the game recently after years with Forza and no wheel. Pleasantly surprised at how nice GT5 drives with an affordable wheel (Logitech GT). I tried the Toyota at 500 pp, but just can't figure out the gearing. I'm bouncing off the rev limiter on the straights (topping out around 240-245 km), and if I adjust it, my acceleration suffers (master of the obvious I know). Either way, I'm only at 4.28 with the 86. Addictive, and fun. Though slogging through events to get credits to buy cars is annoying. Still can't afford the other machinery.

4:12.439 in the LFA quickest I can muster at present... not quite enough!

Will try the Corvette GT next I suppose, as I don't own one of the LMP's currently...

I presume everyone is now running in GT mode in order to have the tyre wear/fuel on? I can't set that option in Arcade TT, unless I'm missing a menu somewhere???

As said before, don't bother with the 'normal' races if you want to make money, just do the seasonal events - up to 1 million+ per race plus good cars.

I don't know what your car handling preferences are - for me the Toyota just doesn't work because I need a nice lift-off oversteer and sharp front-end. You might want to try the NSX which is much better in this regard.

Gearing: top speed is much more important than acceleration at Le Mans, you need to just hit the limiter at the end of the longest straight.

Good advice this  Although I was quicker with the blunt force of the Lexus, if I were to threaten these quick lads times in the low 12's, I'd bet with some tweaking one of the NSX's would be the tool for the job, it feels like you can attack corners with them far more than the others I've tried, just more precision in general!

Nice to have a challenge like this... it's good for when you are bored of the driving standards in the online lobbys, with the constant chatter of you can't bring that here, that's a concept, that's not a road car, can we turn penalties off etc! or being punted off the track by some wannabe in a pink M3 with lime green wheels etc...

We could do an Autosport forum lobby for once and race a bit..? At least we'd know who the idiot with the pink lemon actually was then ;)

Sounds good to me!

I've found a few lobbys online recently where they tend to run race cars 'stock' to keep everyone in with a chance which are really entertaining because it doesn't matter about ability or how much time you've spent tuning, plus you always find someone to race with over 10 laps with tyres and fuel. Usually in the GT500's or DTM's which most people have one example of usually, who knows we could even end up with a short series if it proved popular or feasible from a time perspective?

4:14.775 in the Honda NSX

Also like to clarify that I used the ORECA 908 (although I don't believe there is any difference in performance).

Decided to give this a try when I got home from work yesterday. So.... 'any road car- 500pp'. OK.

As most of the thumbnail images are blank (oddly apart from the cars I've painted....but then the thumbnails are in the original colour  ) I only looked at the performance points.

Ended up climbing mistakenly into a racing cart!! (499pp WTF? )

I'll let you know what my time is ....... when I finally finish the lap!!!!! :drunk:

Madea couple attempts in the NSX against my GT86 ghost. Managed to get 1.5s up by the end of the straight but couldn't string a clean one together, still a bit ropery in the corners and on the brakes compared to the 86. The NSX carries on pulling a lot better at higher speeds. Must be the lower drag or the less peaky power curve/more torque. Or both. Still think sub 10 is possible I'll just need to try it with my wheel instead of pad.

I do think the game is a bit picky on when to award penalties at Le Mans. You can drive off the track on a few corner exits and get away with it, but that last corner before the chicanes (15) just ruins the lap. And I'm sure all of you have had issue at this corner, as you get one wheel past the rumble strip and hit the speed bumps and lap over.

But for above, agreed on the wheel. I think there are a few corners I might be able to take almost flat out, but the pad just won't move that far.

Notch another half second off the time.

4:14.215 in the NSX.

Dang, some of you are using a pad for this? Just tried and I couldn't make it out the Ford Chicanes to start a lap lol! Kids JUST went to granny's for a while so I'll give this a whack. I have a 3:30.068 in the Oreca Pug on racing hards. Surely I can knock 4-5secs off with softs

What wheel setup are you guys using? I am still running my good ole trusty G25

I'm redstorm3rising online if someone wants to play

Oreca Pug 3:26.821
Audi R10 3:26.185

Audi lap was way better than the Pug and the Audi is one squirrely mother! I just cant seem to get it right in the Pug from Arnage to the line.........
