Silverstone GP Build Up/Speculation

"Fronts moving NW-SE into race weekend generally likely to weaken; prolonged heavy rain thus unlikely, but detail next week."
"Broadly mixed fortunes of dry, bright phases & periodic chances rain/showers Fri-Sun. Any rain unlikely disruptive." (both @fergieweather)
I think Alonso can definitely get his title attempt back on track here.
It depends a little on whether the last 2 races where track specific, or if RB actually moved forward with their car because for the first 5 races, Ferrari were only a few tenths behind RB in qualifying and had a decent race advantage.
If this was just due to the higher speed corners/front limited nature of pre Monaco tracks then I would make Alonso a favourite in a dry weekend (and tied favourite as it stands with unknown weather). Webber is normally good in Silverstone but people were saying that for Monaco as well so I'm not sure if his standard is dropping a little bit this year.
Strangely the better Mercedes qualify, the worse they are in the race. I say strangely but that is probably the point right there. Spain was an easy 1-2 for them so maybe they could enjoy a bigger quali advantage here than they did in Monaco but I am surprised at seeing (elsewhere) a few who have mentioned them with respect to the race. I really can't see it myself, if Alonso > Hamilton in Canada I don't see how Hamilton has much of a chance at Silverstone. It will be interesting to see if Rosberg's uprising was only on hold in Canada or if he will start to fade as Hamilton gets used to things at Merc.
Lotus surely had track specific problems at the last 2 races so will have a good look at a podium and Mclaren's race pace was actually quite good in Canada so they will probably improve again at Silverstone and I think they could be in the mix for at least top 6
Another 3 week break after Germany & the UK so hopefully it is a good race
Predictions?

No idea what will happen but woud love a Lewis pole if win is too much to ask for.

I will still watch it though and cheer on any Merc dnf's as I try to stay awake.;)

Agreed. The new layout has made it even more dull really. Can't say I'm really excited atm, tbh Silverstone is one of the most boring tracks of the year for me and I say that as a Brit. Its just dull, although I rather enjoyed it in the very early 90's but the modern configuration is dull imo.

Google Mansell's 1990 pole. That was real Silverstone (and much better/more exciting cars as well). Of course it wouldn't meet any safety standard currently...
The renovation after 2009 didn't alter the circuits nature, but it isn't a whole world better. Actually I liked it more in 2009.
I hope it's a very cold weekend and suddenly the tyres hold together fine. I want to see guys pushing and racing, not doing Barcelona like tyre management.
Alonso still is the favourite no matter what.

(In the dry) I think Red Bull will be more or less un-rivaled for pole, or a front-row lock-out. Ferrari will qualify better than usual, but it's going to be close between them, Mercedes and Lotus, and in the race I expect Mercedes to be the least competitive, even if I think they'll be a long way from being as bad as they were in Barcelona. I bring that up because the sweepers of sector 1 is going to be a tough test.
Force India and McLaren will have a race of their own between them.
Wondering, why in the dry, Red Bull are sure to get pole? In the 3 completely dry qualifyings, it was Mercedes on pole.

I think Vettel will be in the running again, with the tyres not being too much of an issue this time.

It must grieve Lewis that of the cars are his MP4-23 but he cannot be part of the celebrations.
I think he feels just alright

The beauty of any prediction is that it can be based on anything, even gut feeling. Some people might feel Silverstone suits RB9 tremendously while others might feel the circuit would expose RB9 weaknesses just like in Barcelona and Shanghai.Wondering, why in the dry, Red Bull are sure to get pole? In the 3 completely dry qualifyings, it was Mercedes on pole.

The pole is what I'm hoping for, I don't think even a podium is on the cards annoyingly (if it's dry). Are you there for the whole weekend?

The very excellent NetWeather has one of their contributors doing a detailed analysis for Glastonbury updated daily which should provide a reasonable idea of what to expect.

Because Silverstone is a fast aero-circuit, and Red Bull always does well there, even by their high standards.

Exactly. If it's dry, I'm pretty sure a Mercedes driver will get pole. Probably Lewis.

OK, expect wet qualy with Maldonado on pole.
Last wet qualy had Bottas 3rd on grid and Maldonado 13th. I am not sure why you think Maldonado would be on pole if its wet again? Propably it would be (if Williams is on pole) Bottas 1st and Maldonado 11th.

RB may have solved some of their issues with the tyres but I don't think they can mantain the same race pace as Ferrari without burning them out.

Well, Maldonado was P1 in wet Q1 in Monaco. Bottas did better in Canada, but it's not like Pastor is unable to beat him in the wet at all.Last wet qualy had Bottas 3rd on grid and Maldonado 13th. The interesting thing is how such a poor car like FW35 can show so good flashes of qualifying pace in the wet.

I think that, too, and if it comes to pass it will put today's dose of Red Bullshit, courtesy of Mr Horner, in its proper perspective.

Rosberg infront of Hamilton - after Mercedes got no punishment , they can put all cards on the table. Pole, and cruising to the victory - perfect understanding of the Pirelli tires. Well down Ross, you did it again
I have this suspicion too....

Living in fantasy land. They weren't even using 2013 tyres. Merc are going to struggle, like they did in Barcelona. The advantage from this test may come in next years car.I have this suspicion too....

According to pirelli they used all tyres from 2012 to tyres that are not yet tested by others...so that did include 2013 tyres.

It looks a bit strange and appears to have a front wing from 2007/2008 - not beautiful by any stretch of the imagination.

Didn't realise that. THanks for pointing it out. Still don't believe Merc are going to have much better tyre wear this race.According to pirelli they used all tyres from 2012 to tyres that are not yet tested by others...so that did include 2013 tyres.

I wonder why Mercedes didn't put this knowledge to use in the Canadian GP and win already.

Conspiracy theorists would have us believe that they were hiding that pace prior to the tribunal because they didn't want to be seen to have had a sporting advantage. Now the tribunal has past they'll unleash all that pace...I wonder why Mercedes didn't put this knowledge to use in the Canadian GP and win already.
Truthfully though, i suppose any knowledge they had learned in that test would only now be coming through in the shape of parts etc. Still doubt we're going to see anything different here. Red Bull/Ferrari domination in the race, red bull to win because of better qualifying.

Jenson Button's car is on display in Canary Wharf today.

Last week I've seen Williams car at one of the platforms at Euston. Strange place and loads of photographers.
