The one thing that made me go "you moron" was when Clarkson said that punching Vettel would be "revenge for Gallipoli". We didn't fight the Germans at Gallipoli, we fought the Turks, and if the Aussies were going to bash up anyone, it'd be the stupid ****s in the British command that threw us onto the wrong bloody beach.

Given that Clarkson's father-in-law was a VC, and Clarkson himself has done a lot of work with/for the Forces, I reckon he knew that. I doubt though there is any other attack in which Australians suffered such an horrific cost. It would hardly have made the same point if he said it was revenge for Arras.

Some people take Top Gear and driving a pile of poo Suzuki way too far.

The bit at the end of the programme was quality though.

I guess you have to see the whole thing through "fan" glasses. Some would be arguing about it if Hamilton is the best drivers because he plays better Mario Kart than Vettel or the other way around. I believe Loeb would trash the time of Hamilton but that wouldn't make him the best formula one driver.

If someone would have told me in advance the level of outrage and defensiveness over Mark besting Vettel's time in an entertainment show, I scarcely would have believed it!

I suppose what is really afoot is that the Top Gear results may be another thin slice of evidence that Seb may not be the second coming some of his fans believe. Further, it possibly gives a ring of truth to some of the skeptical comments from Alonso, Hamilton and some others who have long questioned if his Triple WDC success is down to the Newey-designed cars he drives, or Vettel, himself. I fathom that would explain their highly emotional, LdM-style response to a TV show! Relax guys, your overreaction to Top Gear's stopwatch and some of Webber's ribbing might lead some to believe that it's YOU who are having doubts about Seb's ultimate pace! Time to lighten up! ;)

 Most of the posters didn't care about time, I don't know what you were reading or believing - your psychologica interpretation is priceless and perhaps you are not sure about your favorite drivers sped while reading this. Where did you got your diploma from?

The real test would be the ROC event where every driver competes with each other at around the same time in the same cars in similar circumstances. But for some reason or another, people like Alonso, Hamilton and Webber decline to go there to properly be tested against the best drivers in motorsport.

Even at ROC, you have quite a bit of randomness. While Top Gear is almost completely useless for comparison, ROC is a bit better (actually driving in the same weather and track conditions), but still not that useful.

Plus, while you have to take anything that happens on Top Gear with a pinch of salt, it is safe to say that if Red Bull wasn't constantly finding a way to mess Webber's weekend up (crap pit stops, constantly faulty KERS, etc) he'd be a lot closer to Vettel than he has been recently.

They actually had a similar amount of issues over the years as was posted on the boards here recently.

Webber's have generally had a bigger effect on his weekend/been more prevalent though.

Yes, cause getting to the F1 without shitload of cash and only by sheer talent is not quite an achievement, back then when F1 was still about having a skill not a big bucket or being a protegee of Red Bull.

I cannot prove it, but I have doubts about that given Vettel has retired from top positions a few times. I think the main effect the issues had is that sometimes Webber appeared to be close to Vettel when he had his usual gap and sometimes Vettel appeared to be trashing Webber, when it was in fact closer.

Hard to be on top positions when almost every weekend you have some problem in quali/practice and often in race. KERS didn't work, team going full ****** without quali strategy, not changing tyre correctly, etc etc. Hard to be somehow close to the top while you have THAT amount of problems

Exactly. If Mark ever writes a book based on his years at Red Bull, I for one will be one of the first in line to buy a copy. No doubt it'd be a very interesting read indeed.

Watched it today and as always it is fun to see F1 driver trying to make something as shitty as Liana look fast

Looking at reactions after the boy joke I wonder how different it would be if Vettel would at any point refer to Webber as "old man" or "you shouldn't kick old men". I would expect a lot of: arrogant, childish, no respect to older etc. accusations towards him

There's a book on the way, don't worry about that. Confirmed to me personally by his Supporters Club boss. Ann Neal's been keeping video and audio diaries of Mark's thoughts after each and every race since 2006, and sparodically before that.

Cool! I hope there's no NDO agreement in play, an open book by Mark would be interesting :-)

I liked the top gear show, and I liked the top gear show with Sebastian, as much as I'm not that fond of him, he has a good sense of humour too, different to Mark, but he can be a funny guy.

People need to chill, top gear is pure entertainment, not sport.

Manly? If he was manly he wouldn't whine all the time... :p if he was manly, he would stand up for himself instead of utilizing his popularity to bash on Seb, if he was manly he would act instead of just talking...

being manly or not is not only a question of size, muscles or a beard

Sin, I have nothing against you, but let it go. You are full of it today trying to make something out of nothing.

I was responding to provocation.... and I responded with that hours ago.... I actually didn't make anything of Top Gear... like I wrote in the posts before it doesn't matter...

I still think Seb would beat Mark in Pokémon....

Thanks, didn't know that, but that's great to hear.

Like Klyster says, I hope it is a "warts 'n all" kinda book (figuratively speaking, anyway ), but I wouldn't expect anything less from Webber, he's always come across as a no-nonsense sort of bloke.

Sounds like there could be a great documentary there too.

It would be really interesting seeing the video diary, and hearing a driver describe the ups and downs of a season in their own unedited words.

It's all in good fun, no reason to take it so seriously. If you take anything serious on Top Gear then your missing the point entirely.

Yes, a motoring program where pianos fall on Morris Marinas and Robin Reliants become space rockets, is not so called "serious consumer advice".;) There are plenty of factual channels on youtube that provide bar charts, and thorough testing of motor vehicles -- . :)

In my opinion, Clarkson and Mark's comments about punching Seb weren't light-hearted or funny.

As I stated, refer to Chris Harris etc for *factual* analysis of handling characterisitics, ride comfort etc of modern motor vehicle products. :) BBC2 is not the place!

The funny part about this is that in Marks original appearance he did a 1:47.1 in the Wet. Clarkson said they thought the wet added 4 seconds and Mark disputed it. In the dry he ends up doing a 1:43.1. Exactly 4 seconds faster.

With that logic Kimi is clearly the fastest of them all in a reasonably priced car.

I love Top Gear and Jezza, but it's time he takes a step aside and let May do the interviews. Clarkson has become way too much of an egomaniac and doesn't leave any space for the guests. That said...
POWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

edit: Mark seems cool and frank, as usual. Clearly done with F1, unfortunately. No love there.

Anyone getting upset about this show are not really part of the intended audience demographic. It has always taken pot shots at the French, Germans, Americans (Mexicans, truckers, Albanians, Italians, Russians, Australians, ecologists, cyclists, caravan owners etc...) and this episode was no different from those that have gone before. If there's real offence, probably best to write and complain formally to the BBC.

Well said.

Kind of unrelated, but did anyone else find it weird how little of McLaren was shown in the last segment of the episode where they were showing British Engineering in Motor vehicles? Surely McLaren and their futuristic Technology Center is the crown jewel of British Motorsport

They also didn't really show the MP4-12C or the P1 or the F1.

With regards to the Top Gear test, I don't think it means too much. I do wish it was longer and that Webber had more time to speak (though they might have cut a lot out due to editing).

They showed MTC, the P1, the 12C GT and an F1 car, so I thought that was fair enough. The angle they were taking was more about the british tech, expertise and products people didn't know about.

Whut?!

Did you even watch Top Gear episode with mp4-12c? Even after those comments McLaren gave them 12C spider, and provided P1 and mp4-26 for the last episode.

Jeremy didn't show MTC just because it would be nice humble pie for him.

the interview only works if you consider the typical British / Aussie humor directed towards Germans. Considering the audience it surely was quite funny. The same question and reply in an offical F1 prees conference would surely have to be seen differently. Wbber however needs to think about his way to put Vettel down. If he thinks about his own legacy, he might should starting talking Vettel up.

Absolutely loved it!

Such interviews are pretty common across the pond I would imagine with all the talk shows and coverage, Such relaxing non serious interviews helps substantially in creating true “Fan bases” across the globe. With Top Gear’s popularity (heck even my uncles watch it and they dont even understand english) I believe F1 NEEDS Top Gear and such platforms.. but we all know who’s the petite person in the way.

Please inform me how Mark was at all putting Vettel down or disrespecting him during this interview. He said that he would not miss Vettel. Likely very true. He said there had been incidents and needle between them in the past. Also true. He said that his father taught him not to hit boys. Funny. He wanted to beat Vettel. Well, duh.

How is it humble pie to showcase British design/engineering in a showcase about British design/engineering?
