There was a time when the vehicles that tugged, towed, and carted racecars to the track were nearly as interesting as the racecars themselves. Time for a look back.

Magoo

May I suggest that you look at this thread on the Nostalgai Forum which has many pages of transporter porn.

I know exactly what you mean. The transporter still exists today and even in those photos it looks like a matte painting from a science fiction movie.

Not photoshop. Old scool cut&paste + airbrush I'd say.

I meant placing the transporter on the background, it definetly was photographed somewhere else. Never doubted the existence of the crazy alien truck.

Aye, I wasn't meaning the vehicle itself. The image looks like a collage, in terms of perspective, shadows etc.

The Cheetah transporter (above) was totally inspired by the Mercedes Renntransporter. It's built on an M-B 300 chassis, in fact, but it powered by a Chevy V8.

You wouldn't want to have a big front end accident in one of these MB-type transporters.

Ah, the old panel vans.
I really wish they were still produced. (Fwd vehicles do not count)

If I remember correctly there used to be a Chevy Vega version.

I've always had a fondness for panel trucks and sedan deliveries, too. I can't explain why, I just think they're cool. Beats me.

Near as I can tell, in a frontal impact the cabin occupants provide deformable structure to protect the W196 or 300SLR cargo.

That truck looks like the one Allan Moffat used. Which was sourced from the US.

Early 60s Chev ute, fabricated nose and a 67? Impala rear bumper up front. And for mine, WHY?

More old transporters

The pictures of the MB transporter has also reminded me just what a nice-looking car the W196 (the open wheel variety) was (or is).

Different set of priorities back then.

the first one reminds me of some sort of  chevy corvair flat bed unit from the '60s.
